Prologue
The sky was dyed red. It wasn't the sunset or the reflection of artificial lights. It was blood. It floated in the air, suspended among the rubble of what was once a city. The wind carried it in thin threads, mixing it with the smoke and dust. Mark Grayson floated in the middle of it all, his suit torn and his breathing labored. He felt every blow to his bones, every wound on his skin. But the worst thing wasn't the physical pain. It was the voice in his head, the one he couldn't silence. —You are strong, Mark, but you still don't understand... His father’s words were still there, even when Nolan was no longer in front of him. He had tried to forget them, to convince himself that he was different, that he could be better. But now, seeing the bodies on the ground and the fire consuming the remains of his world, he wasn’t so sure. Thunder rumbled in the distance. No, it wasn't thunder. Something was moving in the clouds, something that had been watching him since the battle began. Mark clenched his fists and looked up. What was coming now… would make everything before seem like a simple rehearsal.
