As her powers manifest, Rogue decides that the best option is to flee. Eventually, her path leads her to a bar in Alberta, Canada, where she meets Wolverine, a reclusive mutant whom she would then invite to accompany her in exchange for money. In the middle of the road, they are attacked by Sabretooth. Rogue is trapped in Logan's burning truck, while Logan himself is unconscious. Storm and Cyclops come to their rescue, taking them to the X-Mansion. Rogue soon becomes a student at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Mystique, taking the form of Bobby, manipulates Rogue into escaping by making her believe that her gift turns her into a monster. The Brotherhood seizes the opportunity and captures her at the train station; she becomes a component in Magneto's machine at the Statue of Liberty; on the verge of death, the X-Men manage to save her; the distinctive white streaks in her hair are due to the effects of Magneto's machine. A few months after the events of Statue of Liberty Island, now in the year 2006, Bobby and Rogue become romantically involved, but their relationship is complicated by her powers. When Colonel William Stryker attacks the X-Mansion, Rogue, Bobby and John escape with Logan to Boston, where they seek refuge with Bobby's family. When Bobby's parents return, they become aware of their son's powers; when the police become aware of his whereabouts, Pyro attacks and fights them, before Rogue neutralizes his power. The four escape by boarding the Jet X, which had come to their rescue. The Jet is chased by missiles, one of which damages the jet. Rogue is sucked into the hole it creates, being saved by Nightcrawler. Determined to rescue the students who were captured in the invasion of the mansion, the X-Men head to Alkali Lake, where they achieve their objective and manage to escape, losing Jean on the way.

A few days later, Bobby began showing interest in his classmate, Kitty Pride, which alerts Rogue. She also witnesses the exchange between the friends. Rogue wants to save their relationship by taking the cure, which would allow them to have physical contact; on her way she meets Wolverine who after a brief conversation, offers his support. After the X-Men defeat the Brotherhood on Alcatraz Island, she waits in a room at the X-Mansion, where Bobby soon finds her. She ends up taking the cure and tells Bobby that it was what she wanted. However, the effects of the cure would dissolve a few days later as it happened to Magneto.

Rogue was scared and distraught by the first manifestation of her powers, as it happened during her first kiss. This caused her current boyfriend to end up in a coma. Rogue saw this as a curse and avoided touching anyone until Wolverine stabbed her. She is very sensitive when someone hurts her feelings. Also, she is very jealous when Iceman is around another girl. Rogue formed a relationship with Wolverine as a father figure and friend who helped her through her entrance into Xavier's school. Rogue also formed a relationship with Iceman that became strained due to her powers. Rogue has trained with the X-Men, such as being in the Danger Room and helping them by flying the X-Jet to them after Magneto and Mystique left without the X-Men.

Life Force Absorption: Rogue has the ability to absorb the life energy, personality, and memories of anyone she touches. People she absorbs life force from will either lose consciousness or end up in a coma, depending on how much life force she drained from them. If she touches a person for too long, she can kill them. A side effect of this ability is that Rogue retains a mental imprint of the person she absorbed. Power Absorption: Rogue can also absorb the powers of any mutant she touches. However, this absorption is only temporary. The powers she absorbs fade due to time and use.
