The Medarda are respected and feared by their matriarch, Ambessa. As a Noxian general, she embodies a deadly combination of ruthless strength and fearless determination in battle. Her role as a matriarch is no different: it requires great cunning to strengthen the Medarda, leaving no room for failure or compassion. Having adopted the ruthless methods of the Wolf, Ambessa will do whatever it takes to protect her family's legacy, even at the cost of the love of her own children. When Ambessa was ten years old, her father brought her to the site of the Battle of Hildenard to collect weapons from the fallen in exchange for a gold coin for each, putting her in mortal danger at such a young age. Even at such a young age, she learned that death was not something to be feared, but something to be respected. As she grew older, she chose the life of a soldier and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a general in command of several squads. She became the mother of her first child, Kino. Although she loved him very much, she knew that he would never have the strength of a warrior in his heart. Shortly after Kino's birth, Ambessa nearly died defending her ancestral home of Rokrund. As she lay among the corpses, on the brink of death, she saw visions summoned by the Icon Representing the Universe: Kindred by a lone wolf who found a surviving female who had not yet given in to death. The visions Ambessa saw that day strengthened her resolve and ambition: she would bend the world to her will, so that no one could take advantage of her children's weakness. When her grandfather, Menelik Medarda, died, he named no heir. Several branches of the family vied for the throne, but Ambessa outran them all. She vowed to create a legacy worthy of the Medarda name.
