Although Gaston does not have noble status in the final version, it is implied in one scene that he is still wealthy, at least relative to the other villagers.

PERSONALITY

Gaston is strong and handsome, and is very aware of it. He is hailed as a hero in the village, desired by many of the young women in his village (he is even described as "handsome" by the Bimbettes), but he is rude, uneducated, and selfish (the townspeople seem to either not notice or not care, however). Given his narcissistic nature, he openly states that he thinks he is the most handsome man in town. When it comes to women, he proves to be extremely vain and rude, constantly displaying sexist and chauvinistic behavior. This chauvinism also leads him to believe that women are only good for being housewives and unintelligent mothers, something that Belle simply detests. On the subject of children, he tells Belle that they will have "six or seven handsome boys" after marriage. In short, he thinks that men are superior, especially when it comes to him. His vanity and desire to have children in his family makes him uncannily similar to King Henry VIII of England. He is an expert at organizing parties or weddings. It is his male-chauvinistic attitude that ultimately results in his death, as he refuses to treat Belle as an equal, thinking her to be inferior, unimportant, or insignificant. However, despite these negative qualities, he is far from being as stupid or brainless as Belle claims. Beneath his exterior is a clever and cunning mind. This is first shown when he formulates a plan to blackmail Belle into marrying him by bribing Monsieur D'Arque, the owner of the local asylum, to put Maurice in his place. When this fails, Gaston again uses his intelligence to instill fear in the townspeople, fueling their paranoia about the Beast having a "monstrous" nature, and easily gathers a lynch mob to attack the Beast's castle.

GASTON'S "PROPOSAL"

Gaston begins as the local hero of a small French village, chasing Belle around the village as she borrows a book from the local bookstore. Their encounter begins well, but Gaston's remarks about the village women cause Belle to go inside the house, leaving him disappointed. The next day, however, Gaston arranges a wedding outside Belle's house in an attempt to "surprise" her. He tries to get Belle to attend the wedding, again making sexist comments about women and household chores. As he tries to corner Belle, she manages to open the door to her own house. This causes him to lose his balance and fly headfirst into the mud in front of Belle's house, leaving him a mess. Furious and humiliated, Gaston becomes very angry with Belle.

PERSONALITY

A narcissist who sees himself as superior to everyone around him, Gaston is prideful, rude, uneducated, greedy, short-tempered, ill-mannered, arrogant, narcissistic, and sexist. Because of his superiority, he is shown to be a sore loser, as evidenced when he is playing chess with a villager in his tavern and knocks over the chessboard in anger when he loses. He is also impulsive and arrogant, as evidenced by him having arranged a wedding before even proposing to Belle, under the expectation that she would approve of becoming his wife, thinking that she was in love with him. Despite his belief that thinking is "a dangerous pastime" (suggesting that he is anti-intellectual), Gaston can be cunning, calculating, and manipulative. Gaston is the type of person who does not give up on his goals easily; no matter how much Belle avoids him or how harshly he is humiliated, he is determined to make her his wife. In the film, Gaston's vocabulary skills are slightly inconsistent; when Belle refers to him as being "positively primitive" early in the film, the latter apparently takes it as a compliment, clearly not knowing what the term actually means, or as a joke. However, in the song "Gaston", he accurately uses the word "expectorating" in reference to his spitting skills ("expectorating" is a more sophisticated way of saying the term "spit"). Gaston's view of women is extremely sexist and misogynistic, even by the standards of the time in which the film is set. Gaston suffers from obsessive love, which is demonstrated by his intense infatuation with Belle. In fact, he is so obsessed with her that he ignores all the other beautiful women in the village who would be happy to be his "little wife", even ironically, those who technically fit Gaston's standards of how women should behave.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

Gaston has an athletic build, a square double chin, and a handsome appearance. He has icy blue eyes and his long black hair is tied with a crimson ribbon in a ponytail; he also has black, crooked eyebrows. He usually wears yellow hunting gloves, although he discards them midway through; Gaston also wears a red tunic with a yellow collar and a long V-neck, black tights, a brown belt with a gold buckle at the waist, and brown boots with gold detailing. He mainly carries a quiver of arrows on his back and sports a black cape with two silver buttons during cold nights and his final battle with the Beast. He also has a lot of hair on his chest. During the failed marriage attempt, Gaston wears a red tailcoat trimmed with gold fabric, a waistcoat with gold buttons over a white shirt, a black ribbon tie, a black belt with a gold oval buckle around his waist, a gold ribbon in his hair, black boots, and white tights with bright red socks with gray toes and heels (the one on the right has a hole where one of the toes is exposed).
