HISTORY: YOUTH AND RETURN
As a child, he was influenced by the immoral behavior of his father, the Commander, such as his extravagances, his adulterous affairs with the slaves, and his cruel attitudes towards his slaves. In particular, he watched as the Commander whipped the slave Juliana because she would not sleep with him, and soon after she gave birth to Isaura, a white mulatto who was the daughter of his former foreman, Miguel. At school, he constantly displayed bad behavior in class and even threatened the teachers with putting snakes in the classrooms if they informed his parents about it. At home, whenever he misbehaved, his mother Gertrudis would discipline him, but most of the time his father was very indulgent with him. As he grew up, he did not improve. As a teenager, he raped a slave girl on the outskirts of the plantation so violently that she was hit by a stone on the ground and died. Manuela, André's mother, witnessed everything while collecting leaves to make tea for Gertrudes. Leoncio lied to his parents about the cause of death of the slave he killed, but Manuela told the truth to the Commander. As punishment, Leoncio was whipped by his father, so the former sought revenge against Manuela by having the foreman Francisco "Chico" poison Manuela with shnapps. The slaves, including his lover João and his sister Joaquina, did not know the true cause of his death for a long time. Years later, he was sent to university, but secretly dropped out and wasted the money sent by his father to pay for his degree on extravagant parties and prostitutes. During the holidays, he sent a letter saying that he would not go because he preferred to study, but the Commander suspected that his son was lying. Leoncio eventually returned to Campos, without his parents' knowledge. He was having an affair with a woman named Tomasia Albuquerque. He did not love her and only used her for sexual relations.
HISTORY: YOUTH AND RETURN
The Commander later received a letter of payment for a huge debt that his son had incurred and confirmed his suspicions that he had not been studying all the time. After learning that his son was in Campos living in cohabitation with Tomásia, he went to their house. When Tomásia told him that she was pregnant with his child, he revealed that he had never loved her and insulted her saying that he would never marry her because she was poor and also the child could be someone else's. When the Commander arrived to reprimand Leôncio, she revealed to him that she was expecting Leôncio's child, Leôncio told her father that the baby could be anyone's and insulted her, although he knew perfectly well that she was telling the truth. Then the Commander also had an insulting attitude towards her. When they both left the place, the Commander reprimanded his son because of the debts and told his son that he would marry Malvina, daughter of Colonel Sebastião. When they arrived home, they were happily welcomed by Gertrudes and Isaura. When Leôncio saw Isaura, he noticed how beautiful she had become and fell in love with her.
STORY: LUST
Leoncio was as lustful as ever, but he was surprised that Isaura was the first woman to refuse to sleep with him. Isaura had been protected by Gertudes and the Commander from Leoncio's advances, but their neglect to declare her free and hand her over to Miguel meant that she would be Leoncio's slave. The Commander tried to obtain her release letter, but Leoncio sabotaged his attempts to write it, and his health was declining. Contrary to his uncharacteristic disregard for people, Leoncio was saddened after his father's death. After Leoncio's parents died, Leoncio became more eager to try to have sex with her, but she remained resistant. Malvina tried to control him, to no avail.
HISTORY: DEATH AND WHO WAS
He had Isaura in a barn. After she passed out, someone came to the barn with a knife, gave a speech to Leoncio, and killed him. Since the sergeant saw Isaura trying to remove the knife from Leoncio's corpse, Isaura was arrested. Isaura could have been released if she admitted to killing him, but she refused to lie. Only Belquior knew the real culprit; he revealed it to some foremen who ended up being murdered by. At the trial, Belquior reveals who the real killer was out of fear of getting away from Isaura. The original killer was Chico, who stole Serafina's jewelry. However, the writers went for alternate endings; in one of them Rosa is the killer, in another, Belquior, and lastly, Malvina.
HOUSE: SANTA GERTRUDES FARM
The Santa Gertrudes Farm, which has existed for over a century (1854-1998), unlike many coffee farms that had a short lifespan, has overcome all the crises and social and economic changes that have occurred throughout this period, constituting a rare case in this period. Based on the solid fortune of the family that owns it, which allowed for long-term investments in crops and machinery, efficient administrative organization, faithful compliance with legislation, often anticipating legal concerns, and good working relationships that have not led to serious crises, the Santa Gertrudes Farm has always sought to adapt to new circumstances rather than succumb. Coffee has passed, but the existence of this farm as an institution continues, and the air of decadence has not yet hung over it. This farm is therefore a landmark in the agrarian history of São Paulo. The Santa Gertrudes Farm originated from a land grant, that of Morro Azul (the Morro Azul land grant was granted in 1817 to Joaquim Galvão de França, José Galvão de França, residents of Itu, and Manoel de Barros Ferraz from the Parish of Piracicaba), similar to other important sugarcane and coffee farms such as Ibicaba, Morro Azul and Paraguaçu. Like Ibicaba, which belonged to Nicolau de Campos Vergueiro, Santa Gertrudes also had as its starting point the lands of a sugar mill. Its origin was linked to the Laranja Azeda Farm owned by Amador de Lacerda Rodrigues Jordão (he was the son of Brigadier Manoel Rodrigues Jordão, one of the most notable men of his time due to his wealth and prestige, and of Dona Gertrudes Galvão de Moura Lacerda, honorary lady of the imperial pass, a representative figure of 19th century São Paulo society and owner of several farms.
