Gyomei was a well-built and muscular looking man. He was one of the tallest characters in the series, standing over two meters tall[4] and the oldest of all the members that make up the Pillars group and by extension the most experienced. He had short black hair with a thick scar that ran horizontally along his forehead, this scar being a result of his confrontation with the Demon that killed the children under his care. He did not have irises, mainly because he was blind[5] and these, most of the time, filled with tears when he was in an emotional situation.

outfit:

His characteristic clothing consisted of the classic attire of members of the Demon Extermination Corps. His outfit did not have any visible customization except for the fact that he used thick bandages to keep his Hakama attached like pants[7]. He did not wear socks with his Zori sandals[8] that had thick green strings, keeping the sleeves of his jacket rolled up to show off his thick, strong arms. He also carried with him a green Haori[9] with long sleeves and white edges which had the Sanskrits of Buddhism written on each side and printed on its back (in the manga) in a clear allusion to his religiosity. He used to carry a necklace of thick red beads around his neck[10] and was constantly seen holding prayer beads whenever he was not in battle.[11]

Gyomei was a very religious person and could constantly be seen frequently uttering the Amitābha mantra in situations that saddened him and offering prayers to the people around him. Most of the time he remained composed, he was kind and very emotional. He cried frequently in all kinds of situations. Despite his short-worded personality and his tendencies to become emotional to the point of tears, Gyomei had an objective and dubious view on the people around him; being fully aware of the possibilities that others, particularly children or those younger than himself, could do when given an opportunity. Due to his experience before becoming a Demon Hunter, he had further reinforced his quietly dubious nature to the point that it took him a while to accept people completely; but once he accepted those around him, he would reject even what others would say about them, fully believing in the person he accepted. Being the most experienced of all the Pillars, he was the most respected by all of his companions. At times, Gyomei acted as the leader of the pillars and even Kagaya Ubuyashiki completely trusted him to convey information that he could not tell others.

According to Tengen Uzui, Gyomei was one of two people who became Pillars just two months after taking up a sword, the other being Muichiro Tokito.[13] Gyomei's openness level was rated as 90%[14]. Gyomei's father died in an epidemic, while his mother died in childbirth. Some time later, Gyomei became blind due to a fever. Despite this blindness, Gyomei had a keen sense of "sight" and was able to avoid the malicious actions that some people around him did (trying to trip him, throwing things at him, etc.). This caused people around him to call him a liar, claiming that no blind person would be able to do what he does.[15] One of Gyomei's hobbies is playing the shakuhachi, a type of flute. Once, when he played for too long, his grandmother hit him with a broom.[16] Gyomei once headbutted Inosuke Hashibira and knocked him to the ground, which happened because Inosuke decided to unilaterally challenge him to a match.[17]
