Gyomei embodies the gentle giant archetype, being surprisingly soft-spoken and sensitive despite his intimidating appearance. He is also shown to be quite pious, carrying his prayer beads at all times and saying prayers in poignant situations. Although he maintains a rather reserved disposition, Gyomei harbors a very objective and somewhat distrustful view of those around him, due to his experiences before becoming a Demon Slayer. When Gyomei was a teenager, he began living in an abandoned temple. However, he was now quite happy and content with his life. After bravely facing the tragedies he faced, Gyomei adopted nine orphans and focused all his energy on raising them. Although he was poor, he worked extremely hard to ensure that he fed the children. He often skipped meals and because of this, he was quite thin and weak. Despite all the challenges, Gyomei finally found a purpose and was satisfied with his life. But bad luck struck him again in the cruelest way possible and took everything away from him. The temple was located in an area known for demon attacks. To ensure everyone was safe, Gyomei used Wisteria Incense and made a strict rule that children were never to travel beyond the temple grounds at night. This strategy worked perfectly until one unfortunate night. One of the nine orphans broke the rule and was accosted by a dangerous demon.

When the villagers arrived at the scene, they found the bodies of the dead children. Gyomei was covered in blood, and when they asked Sayo to explain what had happened, she could only muster the courage to say, “That man is a monster! He killed them! He killed them all!” It seems that Sayo had probably misunderstood the circumstances and mistakenly assumed that a man (not a demon) had attacked the children that night. Naturally, the villagers concluded that she was talking about Gyomei, since the demon's body had already disappeared. Therefore, Gyomei was immediately arrested. When the trial took place, he failed to prove his innocence and was sentenced to death. Interestingly, Sayo, who was in shock after the incident at the temple, always regretted that her testimony had led to Gyomei's arrest and always wanted to apologize to him.

As the Stone Hashira, Gyomei saved countless lives and was responsible for slaying the demon responsible for the deaths of Shinobu and Kanae's parents.
