Buggy Appearance

Buggy is a tall man with an appearance resembling that of a clown, reflecting his epithet. He has long blue hair and light blue eyes. The large, red nose on his face is, in fact, his real nose. Buggy's face is always covered in makeup, like a clown, and the motifs change from time to time: In the Impel Down series, he has crossbones again running down his forehead to below his eyes, two pink lines pointing upwards, and red lipstick. After the timeskip, Buggy's appearance has changed greatly. His hair is no longer tied up and now looks more spiky. He wears a large red and white striped tricorn hat with a rim adorned with several golden beads and his crew's Jolly Roger on the front. He wears a large red cape, using his Devil Fruit powers to make himself look larger.

Buggy's Personality

Buggy is extremely sensitive about his large red nose and will immediately execute anyone who points it out, usually by blasting them with a Buggy Ball. [37] He frequently tends to misunderstand people talking about his nose when they are actually talking about something completely different, [38] and sometimes even confuses his own speech by thinking they are referring to his nose and gets angry at the people around him for it. Buggy seems to love eating and drinking, as he frequently participates in parties and banquets with his crew. [48] [35] [3] When he was on Level 4 of Impel Down, he wanted to go with Luffy to enter the kitchen, and Galdino was forced to stop him from heading into an obvious ambush. Despite his prideful and vain attitude, Buggy is aware of the many dangers of the Grand Line and usually does not commit rash actions that would get him in trouble, to the point of acting cowardly. Buggy is a showman, and his actions are frequently designed to draw attention to himself. He injects the word "flashy" (派手に, hade ni?) into almost every sentence he says ("Die flashily! You flashy bastard!") and frequently uses it to describe his actions.

Physical Ability

Buggy possesses remarkable physical durability, as he quickly recovered after being hit by a Muggy Ball that Dracule Mihawk bounced back at him at Marineford. Though he avoided most of the damage by using his men as shields, Buggy was able to survive the explosion of a Buggy Ball that Luffy sent flying back at him and emerged from the wreckage of the collapsed tavern uninjured. Also, though he has no immunity to lightning like Luffy, he was able to quickly get up after being hit on the Loguetown execution platform and immediately begin chasing Luffy. In Impel Down, he was able to walk through the extreme heat of Level 4 and the extreme cold of Level 5 without suffering any significant adverse effects. Buggy was able to withstand being beaten by Crocodile and Dracule Mihawk for his misconceptions. Buggy has a remarkable amount of physical strength, which is aided by his Devil Fruit which allows his hands to detach and fly. He was able to easily lift one of his men and Mayor Boodle off the ground by their necks with a single detached hand. Additionally, he was able to lift a massive Blugori into the air with both hands detached, as well as carry Luffy and the massive fish-man Jinbe into the air with just his hands holding them against his torso. He was also able to throw Mohji a great distance forward despite Mohji being slightly larger than him. According to Shanks, Buggy was a very good swimmer, but lost this ability after eating his Devil Fruit.

Devil Fruit

Buggy ate the Bara Bara no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to split his body into pieces and reassemble them at will. This power also makes him immune to slashing attacks, including attacks using Haki. With the exception of his feet, Buggy can cause his detached body parts to levitate and control them telekinetically. He can launch parts of his body at high speed, allowing him to strike a distant target with great force. He can also split his body to dodge attacks from opponents by separating the section of his body that would have received the attack and causing it to fly out of the way. Additionally, your body parts remain connected to each other, even when they are separated. For example, if your hand is separated, you can still control your fingers. Additionally, you can feel any pain that is inflicted on your separated parts.

Epithets after timeskip

Following the timeskip, his epithet Senryō Dōke (千両道化?, lit. "thousand-ryō clown") has also been the subject of different translations, as it is intended to parody the Japanese phrase Senryō Yakusha (千両役者?, lit. "thousand-ryō actor"), a term for extremely popular movie stars and other entertainers. [91] Both VIZ's manga and Funimation's anime translate this epithet as "genius jester", conflating the general concept with an alliterative motif; in contrast, most fan translations use either "star clown" or the more literal "thousand-piece clown".
