Shockwave is an undercover agent in the employ of Megatron. This size-shifting master of disguise has infiltrated the Autobot security apparatus at the highest level - his undercover persona is Longarm Prime, head of Cybertron Intelligence, reporting directly to Ultra Magnus himself. This puts Shockwave in the perfect position to undermine and deceive the Autobots while feeding strategic information to his true master. To establish his credibility, "Longarm" attended Autobot training camp alongside Bumblebee, Wasp, Ironhide, and Bulkhead. And he groomed Wasp to take the fall for him during Autobot training camp in order to remain undercover and continue reporting to Megatron. Megatron recruited Shockwave because his mass-shifting abilities allowed him to effectively mimic a wide variety of Transformers shapes and sizes, making it difficult for the Autobots to accurately track him during infiltration and sabotage missions. It was these traits that led Megatron to send him to enlist in the Autobot military as a means of rising through the ranks and eventually bringing down the organization from within. Disguising himself as a young cadet named "Longarm", Shockwave enrolled in Autobot boot camp, but slipped up in the first few days of training and was overheard reporting to Megatron by the black sheep recruit Bumblebee. Though Shockwave managed to avoid detection right away, Bumblebee was alerted to the presence of a traitor at the camp and suspected fellow recruit Wasp, whom he saw leaving the building shortly after. Bumblebee turned to spy expert Longarm for advice, and Shockwave took the opportunity to divert attention from himself by suggesting that the young Autobot refrain from telling his commander, Sentinel Minor, so that Bee could take full credit when he exposed the traitor himself. Unfortunately, all of Bumblebee's efforts only got him into worse trouble, and his fellow recruits began bullying him, with Longarm being the only one to stand up for him. After several failures on Bumblebee's part, Shockwave took matters into his own hands during a training exercise and switched the firing equipment to live ammunition in an attempt to disconnect the Autobot and keep the whole traitor thing a secret. Fortunately for Bumblebee, this plan was foiled by Bulkhead. Eventually, Shockwave discovered that Sentinel Minor intended to conduct a surprise inspection, and managed to set up a trap for Wasp to take the blame himself.

After planting a Decepticon communicator in Wasp's locker, Shockwave, as Longarm, informed Bumblebee of the upcoming inspection, telling him that it was his last chance to find the evidence he needed. Using one of his extendable limbs to trip Wasp, Shockwave allowed Bumblebee to take the key to Wasp's locker while Bee helped him up, allowing him to find the communicator and show it to Sentinel. In the end, Wasp was dragged off to prison, with Longarm praising Bumblebee for his deductive work. Shockwave subsequently graduated from boot camp and became a member of Cybertron's Elite Guard. Now "Longarm Prime", he became head of Cybertron's Intelligence and remained in this position, hiding in plain sight, for the fifty stellar cycles that Megatron was missing on Earth.
