Story

Jason Curtis Newsted was born on March 4, 1963 in Battle Creek and grew up in Niles, Michigan, USA. As a teenager, Jason became interested in "heavy" music and developed an interest in playing the guitar. He was inspired to take up the bass guitar by Gene Simmons from the popular rock band Kiss. Jason tried to give up his future as a musician several times, but each time he returned to music again. Soon he saved up money for a quality bass guitar and began playing in the band Gangster, whose guitarist, Tom Hamlin, taught him a lot and became practically his mentor. Metallica, which was just emerging at the time, was a major inspiration for Jason and his band. Newsted was a huge Cliff Burton fan and would often go to concerts with his friends to enjoy the talented bassist's playing. For Jason, Cliff's death in 1986 was a serious shock. In his interview, he also said that his "tears flowed down the newspaper sheet and slowly soaked into his printed photograph", and he and his friends "wore black armbands during the next performance". Two weeks later, Jason was in San Francisco, auditioning for Metallica as a new bassist. Having beaten 40 competitors, including Les Claypool, Troy Gregory and Willie Lange, he was accepted into the group. But not everything was so smooth. Still recovering from Cliff's death, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich repeatedly tried to direct their negativity at Jason, who had to endure all this.
