Genya was a boy with a muscular body and considerable height, measuring 180 cm (5'11"). His hair was black[4] with yellow endings[5] and on the right side he was shaved while which, on the left side, extended to below his shoulders, he always used to wear it loose[6]. His eyes were large with small irises and on his face a large scar was noticeable on the right side[4]. It was caused by his mother who transformed into a Demon and tried to kill him. He wore the standard uniform of the Demon Extermination Corps with his signature purple Yukata [6]. When Genya becomes a Demon, her hair lengthens abruptly, having curved tips with small yellow spots at the tips, likewise the sclera of her eyes turns black and her eyes acquire a yellow color, in addition to her nails and teeth growing. .

From his first appearance, he was a temperamental and rude young man, grabbing Kanata Ubuyashiki by the hair without showing any type of remorse.[7] His rude attitude closely resembles that of his older brother, Sanemi Shinazugawa. Much later, having the opportunity to interact with other hunters and Tanjiro Kamado [3], he began to prove more sociable and charismatic [8], but maintaining some of his bad temper. Genya's name, Genya (玄弥) means "Mysterious" (玄, Gen) and "so much the more" / "more and more" (弥, Ya) while Shinazugawa means "Immortality" (不死, Shinazu) and "River" (川, Gawa). Due to his rare powers to devour demons, he is forced to regularly visit the Mariposa Mansion for health checks.[11] Kokushibo mentioned that Genya is not the first demon hunter he has faced whose power gain is related to the consumption of demons.

As one of the five survivors of the Final Selection, Genya displays considerable skill as a Demon Slayer, even without resorting to the use of a Breathing Style. His prowess was evidenced during the battle against Hantengu, the Upper Fourth Rank, when he managed to sneak up on two of its clones, accurately shooting them down and decapitating them in quick succession. After consuming Aizetsu's flesh, Genya gained formidable strength that allowed him to overpower the Upper Rank, piercing him with his own yari and managing to decapitate him. Also, during the confrontation against Zohakuten, in an act of heroism shared with Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko Kamado, he rescued Mitsuri Kanroji, the Pillar of Love, just before a deadly attack managed to reach her. However, his true power was unleashed when he utilized his Demon Transformation ability, granting him a significant increase in his physical abilities. Thanks to this transformation, Genya was able to rival powerful members of the Twelve Demon Moons, such as Hantengu and Kokushibo.[2][3] Increased Stamina: Genya's physical stamina far surpassed that of most Hunters, allowing him to endure intense pain and survive fatal injuries with astonishing determination. This stamina was evidenced on several occasions, such as when he lost one of his teeth during arduous training but continued without giving up, or when one of Hantengu's manifestations stabbed him in the body with a spear. Despite these extremely severe injuries, Genya was able to continue fighting.[4][5][6] Increased Speed: Genya's speed increased to extraordinary levels whenever he recited fragments of the Amida Sutra, an act that allowed him to gain superior control over his physical capabilities. Thanks to his accelerated recovery ability, Genya was able to stay in the fight during multiple engagements, even when severely damaged.[6] Vampiric Trees is a unique Demonic Blood Technique developed by Genya after consuming a fragment of Kokushibo's flesh katana. This ability manifests through his double-barreled shotgun, which undergoes a transformation by firing cartridges composed of demonic flesh. The trajectory and direction of these projectiles are manipulated at will by Genya, granting him absolute control over his attacks. Once the bullets hit the target's body, they begin to sprout and develop rapidly, turning into colossal trees whose roots are anchored deep into the ground. The strength of these trees is such that they can temporarily immobilize even an enemy as powerful as Kokushibo. In addition to its usefulness in immobilizing enemies, the Vampiric Trees technique possesses an even more remarkable strategic quality: its ability to drain large amounts of blood from the target, necessary for the growth of the trees. This blood-absorbing effect is particularly effective in neutralizing the opponents' Demonic Blood Techniques, as it limits the life energy required to execute them. Repetitive Motion (反はん復ぷく動どう作さ, Hanpuku Dōsa?): is a technique taught by Gyomei Himejima designed specifically for Genya to compensate for his inability to employ Breathing Techniques. This methodology is based on the constant repetition of words or phrases that allow him to focus his mind on the task at hand, maintain mental clarity and block physical pain. In Genya's particular case, he recites passages from the Amida Sutra, which serve as an anchor for him to concentrate and strengthen his will. This technique was masterfully demonstrated during his confrontation with Aizetsu, where, despite suffering potentially fatal injuries, Genya managed to stabilize his mind and, to a certain extent, replicate the effects of Total Concentration Breathing, thus highlighting his unwavering resilience and determination. [1] Demon Consumption and Empowerment: Genya's unique ability grants him an exceptional advantage in combat. With abnormally powerful jaws and a specially adapted digestive system, he is able to tear off and consume demon flesh without ill effects, even stripping the bark off trees with ease. By ingesting demon flesh, Genya temporarily gains demon-like characteristics such as sharp fangs, dark sclerae, and a distinctive change to his hair, which takes on yellow tips. In certain cases, presumably due to the high concentration of demon blood, Genya can also assimilate specific attributes of the consumed demon. One notable example occurred when he devoured parts of Kokushibo, temporarily gaining the High Rank's signature eyes, distinctive hair, and even a Demon Slayer's Mark similar to his own. Double-Barreled Shotgun: Genya wields a Western-style double-barreled shotgun, designed to take down targets at long range with deadly accuracy. However, instead of using conventional cartridges, it fires pellets made from the same metal used to forge Nichirin swords, allowing it to permanently kill demons by shooting them in vulnerable areas such as the neck. After consuming a fragment of Kokushibo's katana, Genya's shotgun underwent an astonishing transformation: it took on an appearance similar to the Upper Rank's flesh katana, complete with fleshy veins and eyes peering out from its barrel. This change to his weapon also altered its ammunition, which now consisted of cartridges made from demonic flesh. Nichirin Wakizashi: In addition to his shotgun, Genya carries a wakizashi, a Japanese sword with a blade shorter than a katana, distinguished by its elegant yet functional design. The handguard of this sword features two hollow ovals, which overlap its core and are decorated in a dull brown hue, lending a distinctive and practical air to the weapon. Along with the sword, Genya carries a specially designed sheath, which straps to the back of his hip, ensuring quick and efficient access to his wakizashi in close combat.
