Tsuruno was born and raised in the Sankyo district of Kamihama City. The Yui family arrived in Kamihama when her great-grandfather opened the Banbanzai restaurant after World War II. Later, Tsuruno's grandfather took over the restaurant, making it one of the most popular in Kamihama City.

Tsuruno and her older sister grew up very happily. They were very fond of their father and grandfather because they gave them money. Once, when Tsuruno was in elementary school, she wrote an essay about her grandfather, who was a hero to her because he gave her and her sister money, took them to the zoo for their birthdays, and secretly gave them sweets. Their mother and grandmother were very stingy, never wanting to buy Tsuruno what she wanted. Their father, wanting to give his two daughters the best, was scolded by his mother and wife. Feeling bad, his father treated him well and comforted him through it all, which is why Tsuruno admires and loves her grandfather.

After her grandfather passed away, her father took over the restaurant. Tsuruno's older sister moved abroad to study and work. Tsuruno helped her father with the restaurant, but criticism of the food began to increase, upsetting Tsuruno's mother and grandmother. They sold their once-luxurious possessions to live more comfortably and save money. One day, Tsuruno won the lottery after making a wish with Kyubey and becoming a Magical Girl. However, one night, her mother and grandmother stole all the money to spend on a luxurious cruise, from which they have not yet returned.

History as a Magical Girl

She was part of a team with Yachiyo Nanami, Mifuyu Azusa, Momoko Togame, and Mel Anna. She left the team about six months before Mel's death, when she became a Witch. She was the only one who didn't know the details of what happened.
