For other uses of the term, see: "Zoro (disambiguation)." Roronoa Zoro (ロロノア・ ゾロ, Roronoa Zoro?),[15] known as the Pirate Hunter (海賊狩り, Kaizoku Gari?),[16] is the first pirate to join Monkey D. Luffy, and the Straw Hat Pirates' chief combatant, one of their two swordsmen and one of the main officers of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, as well as a former bounty hunter.[17][3] Born in the East Blue, Zoro is the son of Tera and Roronoa Arashi, the grandson of Shimotsuki Furiko and Roronoa Pinzoro, and the great-nephew of Shimotsuki Ushimaru, making him a matrilineal descendant of both the Shimotsuki family of Wano Country and the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma. [7] He was the first member to join the crew,[18] and is considered part of the Monstrous Trio (怪物三人組, Kaibutsu San-ningumi?) alongside Luffy and Sanji. [19][20] His dream is to become the greatest swordsman in the world. [21] Zoro, along with his captain, is also considered one of the Eleven Supernovas who are part of "the worst generation". [22] He earned his first bounty of Belly 60,000,000 after the Alabasta Arc. It was later increased to Belly 120,000,000 after the Enies Lobby Incident, and again to Belly 320,000,000 after the Dressrosa Arc.[23] After the Raid on Onigashima, his bounty increased to Belly 1,111,000,000, making it the second highest of the crew only surpassed by Luffy's.[24] During the East Blue Arc he had 2 unknown swords that were destroyed by Dracule Mihawk and the Wado Ichimonji. In Loguetown he obtained the Sandai Kitetsu and the Yubashiri to replace his destroyed swords. During the Enies Lobby Arc a sailor rusted and destroyed the Yubashiri, which was replaced by the Shusui that he obtained after defeating his ancestor Shimotsuki Ryuma during the Thriller Bark Arc. During the Wano Country Arc he had to return the Shusui to Wano Country because it was a national treasure and was replaced by the Enma that Koz gave him.

Appearance Zoro wears a white shirt, black pants, boots of the same color and uses a green haramaki, traditional samurai armor, although his is not of the original design: he usually uses it only to hold his swords. He always carries with him a black bandana that he usually wears tied on the forearm of his left arm, and he always ties it to his head when he fights seriously, giving him a more sinister image that causes fear in many of his opponents, and some even claim that he is a real demon. Like Luffy, he usually changes his outfit in a situation or place that has an extreme climate such as Arabasta or Drum. The only thing he does not change is his pants and he rarely takes off the haramaki, although he has been seen without it on occasion. He is the fourth tallest member of the crew, measuring 178 cm (5'9") tall. He has a very serious look and wears three golden earrings in his left ear. His hair is green, which has caused Sanji to call him "Marimo" (a round, green seaweed). The latter has led to various and very funny situations in which even he has been confused. He has a scar on his chest made by Mihawk in his duel against him. He also has two scars on his legs from when Nami, Vivi and he were captured by Mr. 3 during the Little Garden arc. After the two-year time skip, Zoro has grown and is now 181 cm tall, has a new scar crossing his left eye (although in his first appearance on the cover of chapter 598, the scar was incorrectly placed on his right eye), and it was hinted in chapter 599 that he may have lost his eye during his training with Mihawk. His body appears much thicker and more muscular. Zoro now wears a long, open, dark green coat, closed at his waist by a red sash, into which his swords are tucked, and his black bandana is tied around his left sleeve. He has no shirt underneath, and his haramaki

green is visible under the coat.

Personality Zoro is reserved, though he often acts in a comical manner; he also has a terrible sense of direction, to the point of getting lost even on straight paths or when someone is guiding him. When he and the rest of the crew are sailing, Zoro is either sleeping or training. He and Sanji have a great rivalry, fighting (verbally and physically) over unimportant matters and very often, in inopportune situations and/or moments, although when they cooperate (which is rarely the case) they form a great team.

Zoro is determined to become the best swordsman in the world, a goal he seeks to achieve after Kuina's death. Since then Zoro has dedicated himself to training and getting stronger to be one step closer to his dream. After each fight against an enemy during his journey he reflects and looks for what he should improve to become stronger. Although he follows a specific goal, Zoro enjoys fighting and facing different opponents and whenever he can he ends up causing some conflict or scandal, a trait he shares with Luffy. He is very proud and stubborn, every time Chopper orders him to rest due to his injuries received in each fight he simply ignores them and continues his usual routine, which shows that he is not worried about what happens to his body as long as he can fulfill his dream.

He has a strong sense of reason that makes him the backbone of the crew when they reach a point where the situation is serious or critical (such as when Usopp left the crew). Regardless of whether he agrees or not, he will always back up Luffy's decisions (much like Robin), only speaking up to give his opinion when the others fail to see the true implications of the situation (such as when they face Aokiji). His only apparent job aboard the Going Merry is to use his enormous strength to raise the anchor, though lately (and since the Thousand Sunny has a mechanism to do that) he has been seen acting as a lookout.

Zoro can also be very vigorous and will not back down when he is determined to achieve a goal or defeat an enemy. This determination is shown in the Baratie Arc when Zoro faces Mihawk in which he loses but is forgiven by Mihawk upon seeing someone with as much determination as Luffy. When Zoro intends to fight seriously, he will usually put his black bandana (which he usually has tied over his left arm) on his head.

During the voyage, Zoro initially made it clear to Luffy that he was simply joining him to fulfill his dream, however he has slowly begun to change his way of thinking, even going so far (in his fight against Kuma) as to say that "Luffy must be the man who becomes the Pirate King", which could be interpreted as an added goal for himself. Throughout the series he has shown to be the most loyal to Luffy, even calling him "Pirate King" after his defeat at the hands of Mihawk and in the duel against Kuma. Very recently, Zoro almost gave up his dream in an attempt to convince Kuma not to kill Luffy and his crew, thus proving his loyalty and the attachment he has formed with everyone.

Similar to Sanji, Zoro is not as aggressive when confronting women, with Tashigi accusing him of looking down on them and not taking them seriously, however, Zoro himself has shown that if necessary, he is capable of cutting a woman and instilling psychological terror in her, just as he did with Monet in Punk Hazard. After being trained by Mihawk, Zoro has become very confident of his power and when there are problems he believes the best way to solve them is to cut it, demonstrating his confidence by the things that happen.

Zoro has shown to have traits of the classic model of a swordsman/warrior, constantly following a code of honor. An example of this is when he decided not to turn his back and let himself be cut by Mihawk saying that "a scar on the back is a shame for a swordsman" or when at Whiskey Peak he stayed awake exclaiming that "a swordsman is not defeated by alcohol". He also respects those who prove to be great adversaries such as T-Bone or Shimotsuki Ryuma. However, he is willing to abandon his code and bend his pride if it will help his friends and allow him to continue with them.

Zoro has also become more analytical and observant, being more strategic when fighting his opponents. In his fight against King, Zoro deduced that the All-Star belongs to an unknown race, also that he has very particular and unique attributes that he had never seen, such as his extreme resistance, his ability to produce and manipulate fire at will. of the. He also deduced that to defeat him he must discover his secret. Due to the personality of his captain, other characters consider upon meeting them that he is the captain of the crew and some characters like Bartolomeo have even said that Zoro is Luffy's right-hand man. He has a certain penchant for wanting to cut everything. He resents being called "marimo" (green algae).

Physical abilities Zoro is one of the physically strongest characters in the series. He demonstrates his strength when he was fighting Daz Bones, he easily lifted a building despite the injuries he had. He is seen training on the Thousand Sunny with ton-weight weights. His strength is surely equal to or greater than that of a giant since he was able to stop a direct blow from Oars with his swords. After the time skip Zoro considerably increased his strength. Proof of this is that he was able to defeat a Pacifista with a single attack when before the time skip he and all his companions joined forces to defeat one alone, he was able to cut a pirate ship with a single cut, he was also able to defeat and seriously injure Hody Jones, a fishman with physical strength above the average of his race when he was underwater and with several Energy Steroids consumed. One of his greatest feats was defeating Pica in his gigantic form without a single scratch, although he had to resort to Orlumbus to gain mobility and momentum. But the best testimony of his increase in strength is having been able to injure Kaidou to the point that he himself congratulates him since that wound was going to leave a scar, which is a feat that only Kozuki Oden, individually, had achieved twenty years ago. Zoro has also shown to be very agile and fast. An example of this is that in the Whiskey Peak arc he faced a large number of Baroque Works agents, placing himself among their ranks so quickly that they did not notice his presence until he spoke.

Endurance This is not one of the qualities that is most taken into account in characters of this style, but Zoro shows great resistance on several occasions, such as when he fights Hatchan (Arlong Park) after having previously received Mihawk's stab in the Baratie. But without a doubt the greatest show of resistance by this swordsman is after the Thriller Bark saga, when Kuma appears to take Luffy and Zoro asks him to take him instead, to which Kuma, thanks to the ability of his devil fruit, takes all the pain out of Luffy's body and offers him to Zoro to show that he is willing even to die for his captain. Evidently Zoro ends up destroyed, with Sanji, Brook and Robin being the only ones who manage to find out what happened. After the time skip, Zoro's endurance increased. In his fight against the New Fish-Man Pirates, he defeated thousands of fish-men with great ease, including Hyouzou, one of the crew's officers, and remained unharmed without showing any signs of exhaustion. In Dressrosa, he withstood the gravity that Fujitora threw at him, remained conscious, and managed to perform a long-range attack. After defeating Pica, he showed no fatigue and had enough energy to try to stop the Torikago.

Swordsmanship At the beginning of his journey as a pirate, Zoro only mastered the three-sword style, his conventional fighting style; but over time he began to master techniques from other schools, such as the two-sword style (二刀流, Nitōryū?), one-sword style (一刀流, Ittōryū?) or even swordless style (無刀流, Mutōryū?). Currently, Zoro and the rest of the crew have improved their skills to take on the New World. Zoro is known to be able to cut through a Pacifista of the caliber of those encountered in the Sabaody Archipelago, so it follows that Zoro can relatively easily cut through materials even harder than steel without using any Shishi Sonson-like movements, most likely due to having learned how to use Busoshoku Haki.

Two Swords Style Main article: Two-sword style Nitoryu Nigiri Zoro using two swords to perform his nitoryu: nigiri. The Two-Sword Style (二刀流, nitōryū?, lit. "Two-Sword Style") is Zoro's original sword fighting style from his childhood before he began practicing the Three-Sword Style. Much like the latter, Zoro has immense mastery of this style of sword fighting, wielding two of his swords in combat with great skill, even incorporating drawing and re-sheathing techniques as well as flying slashes. In Thriller Bark, before acquiring the Shusui as a replacement for the destroyed Yubashiri, Zoro could wield both the Wado Ichimonji and Sandai Kitetsu with great mastery, being able to go toe-to-toe with Ryuma, an extremely powerful zombie samurai with Brook's Sword Style through the Kage Kage no Mi for most of their fight before switching to using the One-Sword Style to finish off the rest of their enemies. [21] Using the dual-sword style, he is able to fight Monet, a Logia-type Devil Fruit user and an officer of the Donquixote Pirates, and Gyukimaru, an extremely powerful warrior monk, without using his full strength.[22] He was also able to defeat several members of the Orochi Oniwabanshu, the strongest ninja in Wano with ease, despite only having two swords at the time.[23]

Nine Swords Style Main article: Nine Swords Style Nine Swords Style Kiki kyutoryu: Asura. The Nine Swords Style (九刀流, kyūtōryū?) is the most extreme application of Zoro's spiritual projection abilities. With enough anger, a dark aura surrounds him as two full apparitions of his body appear from within his body, giving him the essence of nine swords. Despite its seemingly purely spiritual nature, Zoro's attack power is tripled, allowing him to disperse Kaku's Amane Dachi, his strongest rankyaku, and cut it multiple times in an instant. [27] This form has only been used three times canonically, once against Kaku in Enies Lobby, against a Pacifista in Sabaody,[28] and finally against Kaidou in the assault on Onigashima. [29]

One sword style Main article: One-sword style Daz Bones defeated by Zoro Zoro using the ittoryu iai technique: shishi sonson. The One Sword Style (一刀流, ittōryū?) is a sword style that Zoro began to hone and eventually master. Like the previous styles, Zoro has exceptional skills and mastery of the One Sword Style, and has repeatedly used this style to perform finishing moves against a variety of opponents. Like the Two Sword Style, flying slashes as well as various drawing and re-sheathing techniques are utilized in this style, primarily to defeat or injure powerful opponents with a single attack. This style has been shown to be capable of holding off the Nyaban Brothers of the Black Cat Pirates,[24] defeating several of the lower-ranking members of Arlong's crew, as well as defeating Mr. 1, the strongest agent of Baroque Works, using only a single sword.[25] Using a sword style, he is able to incapacitate a powerful fishman like Hody Jones underwater, take down Ryuma, a powerful samurai and zombie,[21] and even decapitate a dragon's head.[26]

Fire Fox Style Main article: Fire Fox Style En-Ō Santōryū Ippyaku Sanjo Hiryu Jigoku Zoro cuts King's flames. Zoro became interested in the Fire Fox Style, the unique sword style of Kin'emon, the leader of the Nine Red Scabbards, when he saw him use it against Smiley at Punk Hazard. [30] Later, during the fight against Kaidou and Big Mom at Onigashima, it was revealed that Zoro had "stolen" this fighting style from him. As such, he can cut through flames, as shown when he bisected the homie Prometheus, injuring him. [31] Despite this being his first time using it, Zoro has adapted to the style well, cutting through Kaidou's Bolo Breath, and later incorporating it into his regular sword styles. [32][33] Zoro also cut through King's strongest technique, Omori Karyudon, as well as Lunaria itself, defeating it. [34]

Busoshoku haki Main article: Busoshoku haki Zoro uses Busoshoku Haki Zoro hardens his swords into busoshoku haki. Zoro's specialty in Haki. After two years of training, Zoro is able to use this type of Haki. It is known that in Punk Hazard, during the battle against Monet in the "Cookie Room" of Caesar Clown's Laboratory, Zoro yells at Nami, Chopper and Robin to take care of the children (referring to the children Clown had kidnapped for his experiments), since he himself would face Monet, whose Devil Fruit is of the Logia type. [36] Zoro defeats Pica Zoro surpasses Pica's haki with a more powerful haki. Zoro demonstrates a high level of Busoshoku Haki by cutting Pica, an executive of the Donquixote family, and having a superior level, as he had no problems cutting Pica who was fighting with his entire body covered by this haki. During his time as a ronin in Wano, Zoro was shown to be capable of imbuing Busoshoku Haki into weapons other than his usual swords, such as a tanto and a scythe. Zoro's control over this type of Haki also allowed him to overpower Enma, whose ability absorbs its user's Haki in order to release excess of it in attacks. When Enma attempted to absorb all of his Haki, Zoro quickly managed to regain it, something that Hitetsu claims that if he were a normal swordsman, he would have had no chance at and would have instantly collapsed. [37]

Haoshoku haki Main article: Haoshoku haki Zoro using haoshoku haki Zoro covering his katanas with haoshoku haki. In his fight against Kaidou, Zoro decided to use all his remaining strength to try to defeat the Emperor with his Asura Bakkei: Mojano Tawamure attack, an attack in which Kaidou detected Haoshoku Haki from the swordsman. Zoro seemed to use it unconsciously, as he did not know what it referred to.[29] During his fight with King and attempting to stabilize Enma's usage, Zoro decided to release as much Haki as he could, causing it to activate, knocking out rank-and-file members of the Beasts Pirates and coating their katanas with it in the process.[38]

Situational Swords These weapons were used by Zoro for extremely brief periods, usually to allow him to use the three-sword style when he was missing one or two of his swords. Johnny and Yosaku's Nakiri swords, which were borrowed by Zoro during his fight against Hatchan in Arlong Park while he only possessed the Wado Ichimonji. He returned the swords to them after the fight concluded.[19] A Marine's machete to replace the Yubashiri for the remainder of the battle at Enies Lobby, which was abandoned immediately afterwards.[43] A somewhat intended seppuku was used to cut the magistrate instead.[44] A scythe wielded by Kamazo, which Zoro grabbed after he was pierced and used in place of the Shusui.[45]

Arms Being a swordsman, Zoro fights using swords. Throughout his life Zoro has used several different swords: Current swords Wado Ichimonji (和道一文字, Wadō Ichimonji?, lit. "Thin Line of Harmony"): The sword given to her by Kuina's father. It has the most sentimental value, being one of the O Wazamono. Its price is estimated to reach Belly 20,000,000. Sandai Kitetsu (三代 鬼彻, Sandai Kitetsu?, lit. "Third Demon Slayer"): A daito that is said to be cursed to kill its owner, is one of the Wazamono. It has a very sharp edge and a purple/lilac blade. It was given to her by the owner of a sword shop in Loguetown upon displaying her will. Enma (閻魔えんま, Enma?, lit. "Devil"): It is one of the 21 wazamono that was once wielded by Kozuki Oden. Currently, due to Kozuki Hiyori's decision, it is in Zoro's possession.[37] It is also known as the only weapon that has been able to injure Kaidou.[40]

Ancient swords Two unnamed katanas that he used alongside Wado Ichimonji for an unknown period of time. They were destroyed during Zoro's first duel with Dracule Mihawk.[41] Shusui (秋水, Shūsui?, lit. "Clear Autumn Water"): Sword belonging to Ryuma, the legendary samurai of Wano Country. After a tough fight against his corpse in one of the towers of Thiller Bark, Ryuma is defeated by Zoro and gives him his sword. Unlike Yubashiri, his previous sword, Shusui is incredibly heavy, making it more powerful but at the same time more difficult to maneuver. In the Wano Country Arc, Zoro returns this sword to the place at Hiyori's request, as it was a "National Treasure" for Wano. [42] Yubashiri (雪走, Yubashiri?): With a bluish blade and a very light weight, this weapon is one of the 50 Ryo Wazamono. It was owned by the owner of the Loguetown sword shop, but he gave it to Zoro upon seeing his skill in swordsmanship. Its first use was in the fight against Baroque Works at Whiskey Peak. This sword was destroyed while they were fighting at Enies Lobby by Shu with his powers. After Thriller Bark, Zoro held a funeral for her and laid her in the Rumbar Pirates' grave.

Curiosities Zoro demonstrated an ability similar to Kenbunshoku Haki when he fought Daz Bones in Arabasta. Daz Bonez threw a pillar at him, and Zoro somehow managed to dodge it by guessing where the stones would fall. According to him, he could hear the breathing of the stones as they fell. It is unknown if Zoro awakened Kenbunshoku Haki at that moment or if it is another ability.
