Maki appears to be very serious and almost never smiles. The only exception is one of her posters, in which she is shown with a mysterious smile, giving her a mysterious look.

She is very aware that she comes across as unfriendly and prefers to be alone. In general, she does not like people and as such, she is not very cooperative and can be stubborn. She speaks very little, so when she does, she makes herself known and seems very confident in her arguments. She is cynical and negative with a sharp tongue and sometimes speaks sarcastically. Although she is not one to confidently act on her own, she is stated to have courage and is willing to act when it suits her. She has no problem accusing Kaede Akamatsu coldly and rudely on multiple occasions. Despite her distant and unfriendly personality, Maki is good at taking care of others. She is very popular with the children, although she does not like them. According to Kaede Akamatsu, Maki is actually capable of deep love, which the children can see when explaining their affection for her. She also shows a more caring side when accepting gifts and when Kaede invites her to spend time together. Maki is reluctant to alert the people around her to her true talent as the Ultimate Assassin, to the point that she always stayed in her research lab after the room became accessible in Chapter 2. She does this for the sake of preventing unnecessary shock and panic within the group. She also seems to have trouble trusting others and making friends. At first, the only people she trusted were Kaito Momota and Shuichi Saihara, and she began to open up and develop with their support. As the Ultimate Assassin, Maki becomes much more brutal, intimidating, and unafraid to threaten others, showing her confidence in her abilities.

She carries a knife (as seen in her sprites) and is shown to have attempted to strangle Kokichi Ouma multiple times. She sometimes appears to be completely ruthless and cold. Despite her extreme personality, Maki Harukawa is actually deeply insecure due to her past as an assassin. As part of her training, Maki was forced to undergo torture and stated that she "vomited every day" and "cried every night". According to Maki, at one point she felt anger and pain over being forced to kill others until she reached a point where she felt "empty", telling Shuichi that she no longer considered herself human. As a result, Maki's experiences left her feeling self-loathing, believing that she was not worthy of having friends, and so she decided to distance herself from the other students. However, after befriending Kaito and Shuichi, Maki decides to try to change her perspective, eventually learning to accept herself in a way that Kaito inspired her to. Appearance: Maka has red eyes and very long dark brown hair that she wears in pigtails held in place by two large red hair ties. She has straight bangs that cover her eyebrows, as well as two small strands of hair that fall on the sides of her head, with the one that falls on her right side being slightly longer. She also has a mole under her left eye. Despite her slender build, she does have some muscle and strength. She wears a red sailor uniform accompanied by colorful thigh-high socks, a short pleated black plaid skirt, and brown ankle boots. The scarf on her uniform is pale pink with a very slight visible star pattern on it. On her chest pocket is her previous high school's pin, and on the bottom right of her shirt is an emblem. Her accessories include a dark gray bracelet similar to the magnetic bracelets that athletes wear, small silver stud earrings, a white hair clip on the side of her head, and a flower brooch on her right shoulder.
