Personality Levi is described as a "clean freak" by those who know him personally, as he prefers himself and his surroundings to be squeaky clean, even going so far as to clean up other people's things. He is reluctant to dirty himself or his equipment, and has been known to clean his blood-stained swords while still on the battlefield. However, he will not hesitate to touch down if he deems it necessary. Despite his concern for cleanliness, Levi is abrasive and unfriendly. He rarely shows emotion and gives a cold impression to others. His way of speaking tends to be harsh and insulting, his comments are often rude or inappropriate and he does not stop mocking or belittling those who oppose or irritate him. His sense of humor tends to be insulting, vulgar and dark. All of this makes him unsettling to others. In his criminal life, when he lived in the Underground City, Levi refused orders from anyone (as Petra Rall comments to Eren Jaeger). However, after joining the Survey Corps, he began to have great respect for Erwin Smith, who willingly follows orders, believing him to be a great decision-maker for the Survey Corps members. He also shows great trust in his subordinates. However, his obedience is strictly limited to those he respects, and he has no problem showing contempt for authorities outside his immediate circle.

Appearance Levi has short, straight, tight black hair that is cut short at the bottom, dull blue eyes that are narrow and intimidating with dark circles underneath, and a deceptively youthful face. He is rather small, but his physical musculature is well developed thanks to extensive DMT use. He is often frowning or expressionless; this, in addition to his extremely calm demeanor, makes it difficult for others to guess what he is thinking. He is often seen wearing his Survey Corps uniform with a light grey button-down shirt underneath and his signature white bandana. When going on expeditions outside the Walls, he wears the Survey Corps' green hooded cloak. When forced to leave the battlefield due to injury, Levi is seen wearing a black suit, plain white shirt, bandana, and dress shoes. His male reproductive organ measures 10 cm.

In the courtroom, Eren insulted the merchants by calling them "pigs" and told the Military Police that they were not competent enough to take care of Eren. He even sarcastically told them to join the Survey Corps, presumably due to his life of crime before joining the squad. Though rarely shown, Levi has a sense of morality and empathy. One of his defining characteristics is the high value he places on protecting human life - this becomes especially apparent when it is discovered that the Titans were once humans. The idea that he has been unwittingly killing humans all these years greatly disturbs him. He hates unnecessary deaths and urges his subordinates to use their judgment to make decisions that will not cost them their lives. Due to his dangerous profession and personal values, he cares deeply for the lives of his subordinates. When he was ordered to retreat to Wall Rose at the end of the disastrous 57th Exterior Escort Mission, Levi was visibly distraught that so many of his soldiers had died on a mission without any discoveries. As they re-enter the Wall, Petra's father approaches and speaks cheerfully about his daughter and how his respect for Levi is unwavering. Unbeknownst to him, his daughter had just been killed; Levi remained silent, filled with grief, and chose not to answer him. Though it was not out of malice, he was willing to resort to violence to save Eren from his court. He then made a point of asking Eren if he was bothered by the beating he received.

Levi was also clearly affected by the losses of his original Special Operations Squad team at the hands of Annie Leonhart. He also stated that he carries with him the wishes of his deceased comrades, along with his grudge against the Titans, which motivates him to continue fighting. Levi risked his life against the Female Titan in order to retrieve Eren from her mouth. In doing so, he suffered a leg injury. While Levi shows empathy and loyalty towards his subordinates, he shows no mercy towards the Titans, killing them indiscriminately and without distinction. When dealing with the Titans, he comes to realize that they are enemies of humanity. Levi is capable of sadistic and even vengeful behavior. For example, when the Female Titan was captured, Levi told her that he enjoyed watching her suffer and calmly and in detail described how he intended to mutilate her human body. Although his skills are on a completely different level than any other human soldier alive, he does not boast about it, especially since he knows from experience that no human soldier is immortal. Some say that based on his accomplishments, only he can accomplish certain missions because he has proven himself capable of doing them. Aside from his obedience to Erwin, he prefers to work independently. Many of his kills are done solo, with little direct coordination with other soldiers, as he usually orders them to hunt nearby Titans. While he is admired by many and does not hesitate to give orders, he does not see himself as a leader like Erwin is. He does not see much point in using hierarchy, allowing his subordinates to make their decisions as the opportunity arises.
