Birth Born to Carnage as the 1000th symbiote of his lineage, "Toxin" was considered the strongest and most dangerous of his race by Carnage and Venom, as well as Knull. Shortly after being born, the symbiote bonded with police officer Pat Mulligan. [3] When Carnage went after Mulligan, Toxin manifested and protected Patrick by fighting his father. The symbiote and its host later stopped a robbery that was occurring, there Mulligan nearly lost control of the symbiote but was able to stop its impulses, the two also met Spider-Man. [8] Toxin was attacked by both Venom and Carnage, who wanted him dead after seeing that the symbiote had potential to be a hero unlike them. Fortunately, Toxin was able to defeat both evil symbiotes with the help of Spider-Man and Black Cat.
New toxin Years later, the symbiote was removed from Mulligan by Blackheart, who beat Pat Mulligan to death in a gutter,[11] and contained it in a secret laboratory in a Las Vegas casino. With the help of Venom, Jack O'Lantern brought it to his boss, Crime-Master. Crime-Master found the perfect host in Eddie Brock, whom he forced to become Toxin's host. After bonding with Eddie, Toxin took over his host and worked with the Savage Six, attacking his symbiote grandfather, Venom. Toxin tells Venom that after Venom is gone, only he will remain for an event he called the Spawning. The significance of this is unknown, as of now. Venom managed to incapacitate Toxin, but chose not to kill him or his host. Toxin later attacked Venom and separated from Eddie. Venom set the Toxin symbiote on fire, but it managed to reclaim its host and dragged it into the flames to die alongside him. Cton Both the symbiote and Eddie survived their immolation attempt and recovered from their injuries. Eddie and the Toxin symbiote worked out a truce to hunt down and kill Venom, after which they would attempt to kill each other,[12] and began hunting down and killing numerous criminals and gang members. Toxin eventually tracked Venom to Philadelphia and attempted to kill him, but Flash's speech to Eddie caused him to call off his vendetta and accept his bond with Toxin, using it to return to his Lethal Protector lifestyle. Following Eddie's arrest by the FBI, the Toxin symbiote was suppressed using symbiote-inhibiting drugs,[13] and is only capable of action if injected with the antidote. To empower him to fight Carnage and Chthon, Eddie Brock gave the Toxin symbiote to Jubulile van Scotter, who combined it with her own symbiote and the Raze symbiote. The amalgamated symbiote dispersed into wisps of golden light after being used to kill
Chthon, apparently marking the death of the three
King in black Bren Waters (Earth-616) and Toxin (Symbiote) (Earth-616) from King in Black Planet of the Symbiotes Vol 1 3 002 Joined by a new host, Bren Waters Barely surviving, the Toxin symbiote was severely weakened, to the point that not even Knull considered it worth the effort to restore it during his invasion of Earth. Somehow, upon escaping Chthonic Island, the Toxin symbiote eventually bonded with a teenager named Bren Waters. On one of his first outings, Toxin got into a fight with a Brood/human hybrid created by Alchemax's unethical experiments, and was attacked by a Guardsman. Escaping, Toxin returned to Bren's home, arguing with his host, until Bren's father returned home from work and was revealed to be the Guardsman who had fought Toxin earlier.
Extreme massacre After Knull was defeated, Toxin along with Bren and his father watched Senator Peter Krane on television talking about the threat the symbiotes posed and how they should support the Friends of Humanity, and Toxin realized that there was something wrong with Krane as every time he spoke, the symbiote felt like a drumbeat in its head. [14] Weeks later, Toxin was with Bren watching television and complaining about the shows when they saw on the news that Alchemax Tower in Manhattan was being attacked, worrying for Bren's father, the two transformed and headed there. [15] On his way into the building, Toxin's mind was taken away from Bren's by Carnage, who approached him through the Symbiote Hive-Mind in hopes that he would succumb to its corruption like the Life Foundation symbiotes. Reunited with his deranged father, Toxin fought in the Void to protect himself and Bren, enveloping Carnage with his body and taking control of the Void. Toxin then sensed a presence in the Void and approached Bren, who was devastated after seeing his father injured in an attack on the Alchemax Building, stating that they would get revenge. [14] The symbiote's presence was later felt by Andi Benton through the Void, when she called out to it, Toxin appeared in front of Andi and Flash Thompson. [16] Meeting with Agent Anti-Venom and Silence, Toxin decided to team up with them to stop Carnage and they all went to Washington, D.C. for a final confrontation. [14] After realizing that Carnage was inside Peter's son Arthur Krane, Toxin and the others went to the stadium where Peter Krane's demonstration was taking place, but arrived too late to protect the senator, as Carnage had already killed him. As the battle between the heroes and Carnage's hive began, Toxin fought his relative Lasher, explaining that unlike the
explaining that unlike the rest of the Hive, Toxin would not kill innocent people just because Carnage told him to. The heroes defeated and captured most of the Life Foundation symbiotes, except for Agony, who escaped along with Carnage who was now fused with another symbiote. Toxin and Bren decided to stay with Andi and Flash in case Carnage returned, especially since after the battle people began to be more afraid of the symbiotes than ever.
Personality Quote 1 Bren and I are a team. I'm not some crazy parasite like you. Quote 2 — Toxin symbiote [source] As a newly spawned symbiote, Toxin was quite naive and curious, pestering his host with difficult questions. [21] For his part, Mulligan feared that Toxin would prove to be as monstrous as Carnage, concerns which were not unwarranted, as Toxin expressed a morbid sense of humor and a tendency towards excessive use of violence. Mulligan eventually took it upon himself to mentor the young symbiote and teach it to suppress its predatory instincts, but was often harsh towards it. [22] While Toxin tried to tempt Mulligan into giving in to his darker impulses and childishly lashed out at Pat by crippling his combat abilities when he was in danger to force him to admit that he needed him, [23] he cared for his host enough to save him when he attempted suicide and lecture him about trying to kill himself, [21] though Patrick theorized that he only intervened because he did not know if he would be able to find another host. Despite their constant bickering, Mulligan's mentorship left a strong impression on the young symbiote that lasted long after his death.[24] However, following Mulligan's death at the hands of Blackheart, and his capture and bonding with clones of X-23, and his capture by Crime Master, Toxin's trauma caused him to be consumed by bloodlust and rage, and when he bonded with Eddie Brock, he fed on his own hatred of Venom and became as monstrous and violent as his father, Carnage, dashing Mulligan's hopes. As a member of the Savage Six, Toxin/Brock was determined to kill Agent Venom, even threatening innocents such as Betty Brant, and even attacked his teammate Megatak for his chance to kill Venom. Toxin was willing to take Eddie with him when they were both trapped in a fire. However, upon surviving the fire, he was forced to take Eddie with him.
However, upon surviving the fire, Toxin's mind became clearer, but with Brock in control this time, still wanting to kill Venom. Toxin showed submission to Brock's leadership, never arguing or questioning his host's methods, until his apparent death. After returning and bonding with Bren Waters, Toxin developed a stubborn personality and a wry sense of humor, frequently joking or arguing with his host. When in control, Toxin would often threaten to eat his opponents. [7] Despite their bickering, Toxin cares greatly for Bren and considers him his friend. [14] Toxin even rushed Bren to the Alchemax Building so he could rescue his father despite his dislike of him. [15] During his confrontation with Carnage, Toxin not only rejected his father's deal, but also decided to afterwards team up with other heroes to defeat him.
Attributes Powers Toxin possesses his father's powers, but to a greater extent. Additionally, he appears to have a much stronger resistance to sonic waves and intense heat than Carnage. When bonded to Patrick Mulligan, he had a lean, streamlined appearance that closely resembled Spider-Man, with red and dark blue or black coloration. When annoyed or aggressive, he grows much larger and becomes even stronger, developing vicious fangs and long, curved claws. When bonded to Eddie Brock, Toxin initially appeared all red and massive, [25] but after recovering from burns, he turned red and black. [26] After Eddie was recruited by the FBI, the Toxin symbiote took on the appearance of black and red body armor, seemingly in emulation of Agent Venom. [24] After bonding to Bren Waters, it took on a mix of Patrick and Eddie's forms.
Abilities: Superhuman Strength: He possesses great superhuman strength, and at the time of his birth was stronger than Carnage and Venom combined. Depending on how angry or upset he gets, he can grow to a much larger size, with large claws and vicious fangs. His strength extends to his legs, allowing him to leap heights and distances impossible for a normal human. Superhuman Speed: Can move or run at speeds greater than any normal human being. Superhuman Stamina: He can exert himself at his peak capacity for at least 48 hours until fatigue affects him. Superhuman Agility: His agility is superior to that of any normal human being. Superhuman Reflexes: His reflexes are far superior to those of any normal human being. Superhuman Durability: He is far more resistant to injury than Spider-Man, Venom, and Carnage combined, but still has the traditional symbiote weaknesses, albeit to a much lesser degree. The tissue the symbiote is composed of makes Brock's body far tougher and much more resistant to physical injury than the body of an ordinary human. Brock can withstand high-caliber bullets, great impact forces, powerful energy blasts, and falls from great heights without sustaining physical injury. He is durable enough to withstand multiple volleys of high-caliber weapons such as machine guns from close range completely unfazed, and can withstand hits from superhuman beings such as the Wrecker, Spider-Man, Carnage, etc. unscathed. He also possesses extreme resistance to pain, appearing to feel it only to a limited extent. Genetic Memory: The symbiote possesses some limited psychic ability, allowing it to gain information from its hosts and even other people and symbiotes simply by contact. However, it may be forced to forget information if the symbiote suffers severe trauma.
Offspring Detection: The symbiote is able to psychically detect its offspring, however, with effort, this ability can be blocked. Spider-Sense: Brock also has an extrasensory ability similar to Spider-Man's spider-sense. This response is not as complicated as Spider-Man's inherent sense, as the alien suit can detect danger from all directions and guide Brock in plenty of time. It is much more efficient than Spider-Man's spider-sense because it is more specific as to where the danger is. Spider-Man's Spider-Sense Immunity: Due to Spider-Man being host to the Toxin symbiote's predecessor, Toxin is able to bypass Spider-Man's spider-sense. As such, he is able to attack Spider-Man without alerting him, making him a very lethal opponent. Constituent Matter Generation: Toxin can also use the same substance that makes up the symbiote in the form of constituent black matter, and can generate tentacle-like appendages from various parts of his body, which he often uses either in combat situations or to restrain someone. Shape Alteration: Toxin can manipulate his matter to enlarge or stretch his body in order to augment his attacks. He can transform sections of his body, such as his hands or feet, into spikes, blades, axes, or a shield. Toxin also has the ability to manifest wings for flight. [14] Stretching and deforming: Although it is widely known that the symbiote can stretch and re-form, it was recently able to perform this ability while attached to a human host.
Regeneration: It is capable of healing wounds on the host at an exceptionally fast rate. The symbiote is even capable of healing wounds and diseases that current human medical care cannot cure, such as cancer. Camouflage: The symbiote is able to mimic the appearance of any form of clothing, camouflaging itself with its surroundings and even mimicking other people. Wall-Climbing - Much like Spider-Man, Toxin has the ability to stick to virtually any surface. He can crawl, walk, or run quickly even on slippery or wet surfaces. Organic Webbing: Toxin can project a powerful, limitless organic substance similar to the webbing Spider-Man has (which takes the form of thick red and blue tendrils like Ghost Rider's chains). He typically uses this webbing to swing from building to building or as a means of immobilizing someone. The webbing is incredibly strong. Venomous Fangs - An ability developed by Brock when he bonded with the symbiote. Toxin's fangs not only intimidate enemies, but also deliver a powerful, toxic bite. Tracking: Toxin can track anyone, not just other symbiotes, as long as he has something to detect their scent on.
