Appearance

She has fair skin and long, shaggy, dark plum-colored hair that is unevenly cut as a result of repeated bullying. She has pale, gray-purple eyes that almost always express anxiety or tearfulness, and a mole under the left corner of her eye. Mikan also wears a white apron, tied around her neck with a ribbon. The apron has two red stripes, one long and vertical, and one short, horizontal and perpendicular to the first. Under the apron, she wears a sky-blue skirt. Mikan's right leg and left arm are covered in bandages, and there is a bandage on her left knee. She wears white socks and boots. She also has a pale pink shirt with voluminous sleeves. During her school days, Mikan wore the Hope's Peak Academy school uniform. She has a bandage on her right cheek and bandages wrapped around her right leg and left knee.

Personality

Mikan Tsumiki is an extremely meek, paranoid, and fragile individual who suffers from extremely low self-esteem as a result of abuse and bullying. This has resulted in many behavioral symptoms such as being easily timid, having nervous breakdowns and crying, apologizing frequently, and stuttering when speaking. This has a strong effect on how others perceive her - according to Akane Owari, "She wouldn't hurt a fly. A fly would probably hurt her." She constantly worries about annoying, bothering, or even offending others, going so far as to ask Hajime Hinata if she could remember his name and introduce herself. This sensitive side makes her a target for Hiyoko Saionji's predatory and cruel personality. However, Mikan acts much more confident when doing medical work. Her medical knowledge proves useful in homicide investigations, as she provides autopsy reports, including information on the corpse's condition, details on injuries, cause of death, and time of death. She also occasionally gives the others health advice on eating and sleeping, and can sometimes start describing bodily functions in too much detail in her desire to give the other students information on something. Unlike most of the students, Mikan says that she enjoys being on the island because her classmates acknowledge her, and her talent makes her useful.

Personality 2

Perhaps due to her high understanding of human physiology, Mikan is very good at reading people's faces, but she tends to second-guess and assumes that those around her dislike her. She generally wants to please others and help people, but her complete lack of confidence and desire to not be a bother causes her to rarely assert herself or speak up about her guesses, though if she feels the need, she will ask her classmates for permission. This is exacerbated during class trials, where despite her talent being useful in solving a murder, she rarely speaks up of her own accord. Since her social intuition is generally poor, if there is an awkward pause in a conversation, she will immediately panic and apologize, believing it to be her fault. However, despite lacking many basic social skills, Mikan tries to connect with her surroundings by changing aspects of her behavior to match what she projects as her peers' thoughts. Due to the abuse she has suffered in the past, Mikan is very awkward and has a distorted perception of both positive and negative social interactions. When treated with any kind of respect or sympathy, her first reaction is outright confusion and fear that she has done something wrong. She believes that being ignored is worse than being abused, thinking that people who do not bully her are disregarding her existence, a prospect that frightens her even more. If someone treats her well and is outwardly kind to her for a long time, she tends to become obsessive and clingy towards them, similar to stalker behavior, which is interpreted as extremely creepy (at least according to Hajime), showing that she is incapable of sharing and reciprocating positive feelings in a normal, healthy way. This was exploited by her supposed lover, who turned this affection into pathological subservience.

Personality 3

Defined by an unnaturally intense state of submissiveness and self-deprecation as a defense mechanism, Mikan is somewhat prone to strange outbursts where repressed elements of her personality quickly resurface for short periods of time, usually accompanied by apologies. These traits include a deep-seated sense of resentment towards those who have wronged her, a general frustration with the way she is treated, various obsessions, and a strong desire for attention and affection. She also has a disturbing love for syringes and injections, which she offers to Hajime whenever she has access to the pharmacy. Her job as a nurse allows her to feel useful in a way she does not normally feel, and also contributes to her desire to assert influence over anything, a feeling she would essentially never feel otherwise, given her general submissiveness.

History

Mikan had a very harsh and difficult childhood. She was physically, emotionally, and possibly sexually abused by family members and classmates, and possibly even strangers. She was doused with water, smeared with mud, and had cigarettes put out on her. Bullies beat her, cut off her hair (which still remains on her appearance), drew on her, used her as a dartboard, forced her to pay off their debts, eat insects, pretend to be an animal, and strip naked. She had no friends or acquaintances. She grew up completely alone. As a result, Mikan became a timid, extremely shy, whiny, and nervous person who thought it was better to be treated worse than to be completely ignored. She feared loneliness and lack of attention more than insults, and let people do whatever they wanted to her. This is proven by the fact that during a Free Time Event with Hajime, Mikan offers him all sorts of options to atone for his guilt, including completely stripping naked. This clearly gives the impression that Mikan is a very traumatized person from her past who was ultimately unable to work through it. She attended Lapis Lazuli Girls' High School and later entered Hope's Peak Academy as the Ultimate Nurse of Class 77.

Her given name (蜜柑) means "mandarin" and her family name (罪木) means "tree of sin". Her original title is "Absolute Health Committee Member" - a general student committee in a Japanese high school whose tasks include providing first aid during school events, monitoring the school's sanitation conditions, and promoting healthy lifestyles. Mikan is qualified to administer vaccines (as a nurse and not as a health committee member) - this means that her circumstances as a health committee member are special. Mikan's birthday (May 12) coincides with International Nurses Day. It is implied that Mikan can have romantic feelings for people of different genders. Perhaps Mikan has megalophobia. Mikan's hair was cut off in clumps by hooligans. She mentions that she likes horror movies because of the blood and helpless people. There is a high probability that Mikan suffers from Dependent Personality Disorder, as she fits almost all the symptoms. There is also a possibility that Mikan also has Social Anxiety Disorder due to her stuttering, nervousness in social situations, fear of disturbing, bothering, and being easily upset.
