David demonstrated leadership qualities by how he was voted leader of his town and has influence on his men. However, he didn't have full control over them, as evidenced when some questioned his leadership. A small group even disobeyed his order to keep Ellie alive. However, James followed him, heeding his command to not kill Ellie despite what she had done to his friends.[2] David was an excellent combatant in how he killed runners and clickers with just his revolver and fists; he even managed to kill a bloater with Ellie's assistance. He was also able to use a hunting rifle, though he stated Ellie was a much better shot than him with it.[4] He wielded a machete which he could use with lethal efficiency, being able to non-canonically kill Ellie with just one slash. David appears to be ambidextrous, as he uses both hands at different times when firing his revolver. Furthermore, his machete is at his left side, but he picks it up with his right hand.[3]

skills and abilities (2

David was also adept at stealth in how he easily tracked Ellie on multiple occasions and successfully strangled and disarmed her at the same time. He was quiet enough to not be heard and would strike out of nowhere when given a chance, making it very difficult for Ellie to stab him for a third time. He also had a high pain tolerance, only grunting when stabbed and retained the strength to pin and strangle Ellie almost to her death despite his wounds.[7] During Ellie's boss battle against him, David displayed a good sense of hearing, able to track Ellie in the restaurant when he heard her step on broken plates from even the very back of the room despite a fire blazing in the background. On Grounded difficulty, David will hear Ellie while crouched unless she is moving slowly; he is the only human in the game to show this behavior, as generally only infected can hear the player moving at full speed while crouched. He was quite fast, able to sprint over to Ellie in a matter of seconds and could continue doing so until he lost sight of Ellie, displaying incredible endurance.[3]

Traits/more about him

David did not resort to violence if he could help it. At first, he displayed concern over Ellie and did his best to help her.[4] It is implied he cared for the people in his group and their well-being, as early on he personally hunted for food with his partner James instead of having someone else do it. He was also charismatic, leading his group and controlled people like James and Ellie without the need to be aggressive or hostile towards them; he asked and they complied. He also supported those around him, complimenting their survival capabilities, notably Ellie.[2] His true colors were revealed, however, when he admitted his group were the ones that Ellie and Joel fought at the University. Later, David revealed that he and his group had resorted to cannibalism, treating strangers as food rather than people. He also exercised a belief in fate, asserting "everything happens for a reason", hinting he believed his encounter with Ellie felt like destiny to him.[2]It is implied he had disturbing intentions for Ellie, supported by him touching Ellie's hand and calling her "special". A cannibal Joel tortured even called Ellie "David's newest pet" suggesting he captured and manipulated other teenagers beforehand.[5] When David tried to murder Ellie, he paced around in a hurried, slightly jerking manner and he sounded almost insane as he stalked around looking for her.[3]

James/his relationship with him

James was implied to be David's right-hand man and was a cannibal like the rest of the group. David personally viewed the man as his friend. Unlike David, James was not seemingly as kind-hearted and does not always agree with David's decisions. Knowing that a group of David's men were killed in the University by a man and a little girl, he overheard David's conversation with Ellie about the incident and was reluctant to let Ellie leave, but complied nonetheless; one of the few cannibals to do so.[2] Despite this compliance, he later told the search party about Ellie's role in their friends' deaths, leading them to disobey David's orders and try to kill her, thereby undermining David's leadership.[3] When James noticed Ellie waking up, he informed David straight away, having helped him secure a new "pet." James appeared to work for David at times, butchering a human corpse for him and the group. He also assisted him in their attempt to butcher Ellie, demonstrating David relied on him on several occasions to help.[6] He even went out hunting with David, displaying a gesture of protection when Ellie threatened him.[2] When Ellie killed James though, David indicated sadness for his death, saying that James was just trying to do his job, and Ellie shouldn't have killed him.[3]

Ellie's relationship with him (1

Ellie's relationship with David was traumatizing for her. It was also rife with many ironies, for instance when David allowed Ellie to leave with the penicillin, she used it to heal Joel, who later helped Ellie kill most of David's group.[2] Ellie also called him an "animal" despite eating the food he offered much like one in the cell.[5] David even tried to keep Ellie alive, even though she later killed him with his own machete that he tried to kill her with.[7] Davidellie David introducing himself to Ellie. David often talked to Ellie in a patronizing tone and treated Ellie like a child, namely when they first met, David offered to exchange supplies for a share of the meat from the deer that Ellie had tracked and killed, saying that his group needed the meat because they had many women and children to feed. He emphasized the phrase "Women and children" several times in the hopes that Ellie, being young, would naturally feel sympathy. David took advantage of her being a child by making her believe she was in control when confronting him and James, complying with Ellie's demands despite having an idea of who she is. When the infected attacked, he revealed his true colors by saving her with a hidden revolver, asserting she never had control at all; he was just sizing her up.[4]

Ellie's relationship with him (2

Similar to Joel, he viewed himself as Ellie's protector, saving her from a clicker and captured her personally to "keep her alive". He even offered Ellie a place in his group, saying he could protect her and how he viewed her as "special".[2] However, he was much more manipulative with her than Joel was. When Ellie reacted with rage and disgust, he tried to calm her down as though she were an irate irrational youth. He dismissed Ellie's disdain for him and touched Ellie's hand only for her to break his finger and attempt to steal his keys, causing David to lose faith towards Ellie; he no longer desired to have her join the community.[5] Despite having once protected Ellie from infected, David was now willing to kill Ellie due to her stubborn nature. As Ellie killed more and more of his men, including his second in command, James, David grew more fixated on her and made several attempts to kill her.[6] He did show some guilt when he decided to try to kill Ellie. He told her he was sorry about Callus's death, (caused by his men when they shot him in an attempt to capture Ellie), although he taunted her that they would eat him, and that if she gave up, he promised he would make her death as quick and painless as possible.[3] However, David met his demise when he was violently hacked to death with his own machete by Ellie.[7] Considering his violent death, his actions left a mark on Ellie, making her distant and quiet towards Joel yet more determined to reach the Fireflies.[8]

Very little is known about David's past. At some point before the events of the game, he came to lead a group of survivors. He befriended James and the two came to trust each other.

pt 1

David sent his men to track Ellie with the hope that she would lead them to Joel. His men mentioned that they were under strict orders from David to keep her alive, but decided to ignore these orders when they found out from James that it was Joel who slaughtered half the raiders at the university. Overhearing their conversation, Ellie decided to lead them away from Joel, then double back to him. She rode away from David's group on horseback, then escaped on foot after her horse was shot and killed. Eventually, David himself found her, grabbed her from behind, and choked her unconscious, claiming that he was "keeping her alive."[3]

up a corpse on a table, and discovered that David and his group were cannibals. Ellie was visibly disgusted and hostile toward David, calling him an "animal." David pleaded to Ellie that he had her best interests in mind, and offered her a place in his group. He then affectionately touched Ellie's hand. Seizing her chance, she broke David's finger and attempted to grab his keys, but David slammed her against the cell bars and threatened her life.[5] The next day, David and James arrived and pinned Ellie down onto the table attempting to slaughter her for food. In the struggle, Ellie bit David's hand, which only infuriated him more. Just before David struck her with a butcher knife, Ellie exclaimed she was infected and stated that David was infected too. David was initially skeptical, but Ellie insisted that he should roll up her right sleeve and see for himself. Upon finding out she was telling the truth, James became frightened but David claimed it couldn’t be real because she would have already turned. As the two men argued, Ellie seized the butcher knife with her left hand and slashed James' throat, killing him. David shot at Ellie as she ran, but hit one of the hanging bodies instead. Ellie escaped from the room with her switchblade.[6] David organized a search party to look for Ellie and even taunted her in a demented tone as he traversed through the town.[3]

pt 3

David eventually found Ellie in an old restaurant, struggling with her as she attempted to escape from his people out the back door and commenting that she was easy to track. He knocked her down, taking her revolver, and held her at gunpoint. During their struggle a lantern had been shattered, starting a fire that distracted David long enough for Ellie to run and hide. As the restaurant was slowly engulfed in flames, he locked the exit and continued to taunt Ellie, telling her that she had nowhere to go and would need to take the keys from him if she wanted to leave. He stalked her throughout the restaurant, all the while mocking her and expressing his disappointment that she did not accept his offer to join the group. Ellie continued to hide among the tables of the restaurant, trying to outmaneuver David and get the keys. After Ellie stabbed David from behind once with her switchblade, he threw her off and attempted to shoot her with his revolver, missing as she took cover. He then drew a machete and continued to stalk her, growing angrier and seemingly ignoring the bloody wound. Ellie used her small size to her advantage and managed to get behind David to stab him twice more. In the ensuing struggle, David slammed Ellie onto a table, knocking her out before he passed out as well.[3]

pt 4

David eventually regained consciousness and saw Ellie crawling towards his machete. Before she could reach it, David came behind her and kicked her repeatedly, telling her it was "okay to give up." After she refused, David kicked Ellie again, pinned her down, and grabbed her by the throat, telling her that she could "try begging." He then began choking Ellie to death but she managed to seize the machete and slash his arm. David cried out, rolling off her, allowing Ellie to get on top of him where she began to violently hack him in the face and neck, killing him. She only stopped striking his corpse when Joel found her and pulled her away.[7] David's actions are heavily implied to have severely affected Ellie long after his death, as she became noticeably more withdrawn, distant, and quiet, yet more determined than ever to reach the Fireflies during the Spring months, claiming that what she has done and been through to reach them "can't be for nothing."[8]

Runner Zombies

Runner Stage of infection: 1st Duration of infection: 2 days to 2 weeks How to avoid: Do not let them swarm you How to defeat: Sneak attacks or repeated mêlée attacks/blunt force The earliest and weakest stage of the infected, runners are the most human-like in appearance. Runners are characterized by their hunched posture, thinning hair, and pale and lesioned skin. During this stage of infection, people quickly develop hyper-aggressive tendencies and also begin to lose their eyesight. Runners are extremely fast and tend to swarm their targets in packs.

Stalker Zombies

Stalker Stage of infection: 2nd Duration of infection: 2 weeks to 1 year How to avoid: Be wary of your surroundings How to defeat: Maintain distance either by running/hiding or using mêlée weapons Stalkers retain the speed of runners but with slightly diminished vision. At this stage of infection, fungal growths begin pushing out of their heads, often leaving them with a single eye. Stalkers are known to hide and wait in their surroundings for unsuspecting victims to approach before ambushing them. Stalkers have a rudimentary echo-location ability.

Clicker Zombies

Clicker Stage of infection: 3rd Duration of infection: 1 year or longer How to avoid: Keep your distance How to defeat: Use mêlée weapons or guns During this stage of infection, subjects completely lose their vision and rely solely on echo-location as a means for navigation—characterized by a clicking noise they emit. Unlike runners and stalkers, clickers appear less human in appearance. At this stage, the fungal growths have spread across their bodies, leaving their clothes in tatters. The growths have also overtaken their faces to provide a strong plate of armor that protects their brains from attacks.

Bloater Zombies

Bloater Stage of infection: 4th Duration of infection: Several years How to avoid: Keep your distance. If they grab you, death is certain. How to defeat: Use a shotgun to maintain a distance. Then, use fire—either via Molotov cocktails or a flamethrower. Bloaters are a rare but dangerous stage of infection. At this stage, the fungal growths have spread across their bodies—like clickers—but have completely done away with their clothing. The external fungal growths are now so thick and strong that they can withstand attacks from large guns and mêlée weapons. Bloaters are aggressive but slow and predictable. Bloater’s bodies are also covered in mycotoxin pouches which they throw at their targets. These pouches will then explode on impact, spraying a deadly cloud of toxins.

Shambler Zombies

Shambler Stage of infection: 4th Duration of infection: Several years How to avoid: Keep your distance How to defeat: Same as bloaters. Mines and pipe bombs also work well. Shamblers are a variant of bloaters, and similar in appearance and ability, but with the main difference being that they are found in locations with high exposure to water. Further, shamblers can spray acid when they get close to their targets.

Rat King zombie

Rat king Stage of infection: Possible 5th Duration of infection: Several decades How to avoid: Do not engage unless absolutely necessary How to defeat: Save all of your fire power for combat with a rat king. Run as much as possible to maintain a comfortable distance. An ultra-rare and anomalous evolution of the infected, rat kings are monstrous masses of conjoined stalkers, clickers, and bloaters. They are extremely strong and dangerous. If a rat king sustains enough damage, an individual infected can detach themselves from the larger connected mass.

The Plague

What is the plague in ‘The Last of Us’? In late 2013, a mutated strain of the cordyceps fungus originating in South America spread across the United States. In the months that followed, around 60% of the world’s population was infected, or killed by, the cordyceps brain infection. The infected behave in an aggressive, zombie-like manner and become progressively disfigured, thanks to the fungal growth that pushes out of their heads and eventually covers their bodies.

How to get infected

How did people get infected in ‘The Last of Us’? There are two main ways for people to become infected: Being bitten by an infected person Inhalation of cordyceps spores

Strongest Zombie

What is the strongest zombie in ‘The Last of Us’? The strongest of the infected in The Last of Us is the rat king, which is a monstrous superorganism composed of several smaller infected types melded together.

Leader of a cannibal group

Background

Background The cannibals formed in the town by the Lakeside Resort in Silver Lake after the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak. The group contains men, women and children, the latter a rarity among groups outside quarantine zones and other settlements in post-apocalyptic America. At some point, David took control and made James his right-hand man.[3] Over the next twenty years, the group's supplies dwindled until they eventually were forced to resort to cannibalism to survive, especially during harsh winters.[6] The supplies eventually ran so low that David began sending hunting parties out far from the town to search nearby areas for any remaining supplies or survivors that they could capture and consume.[3]

basics

David is a supporting character and the main antagonist of the winter chapter in The Last of Us Part I. He was the leader of a group of cannibalistic survivors.[3]

cannibals (1

The cannibals[fn 1] (also referred to as the survivors[2]) are an antagonistic group of survivors encountered twice in The Last of Us, first at the University of Eastern Colorado and then in the town of Silver Lake.[3] They also appear in the Colorado Mountain Plaza in Left Behind, and are mentioned in The Last of Us Part II.[4][5] These are survivors who have resorted to the capture and murder of any travelers who they encounter, eating them as a means of survival due to the shortage of food in the post-infected world.[3][6]

cannibals (2

remaining supplies or survivors that they could capture and consume.[3] Encounters with Joel and Ellie In the autumn of 2033, David sent some of his men to look for food at the University of Eastern Colorado, where they encountered and attempted to kill Joel Miller and Ellie Williams. However, the pair fought them off, with Joel successfully killing numerous members within the group. One cannibal managed to surprise Joel, tackling him off a ledge that led to a piece of rebar impaling his abdomen. Ellie scrambled to help him and successfully carried him to Callus, their horse, killing six more cannibals along the way.[7] The pair then rode away from the university towards the Colorado Mountain Plaza. However, the remaining cannibals continued the chase, tracking them down to the plaza. However, infected resided in the mall, leading the cannibals to fight their way through in their search for Ellie and the wounded Joel. Eventually, the cannibals, infected and Ellie all fought each other in the plaza square, the skirmish ending with many cannibals dying but failing to kill Ellie or locate Joel.[4]

cannibals (3

trade a bottle of penicillin and a syringe in exchange for a deer which Ellie has killed. James left to get the medicine, leaving David with Ellie. While waiting, David tried to get Ellie to open up to him, deducing she was doing this for the sake of one person, not a group like she had previously implied. After facing a large number of infected, and finding the corpses of the hunting party he sent, David realized that Ellie was the girl from the university. James appeared and pointed his gun at her, only to let Ellie go when David talked him down.[3]

cannibals (4

A small group of the cannibals was sent to capture Ellie, finding her at the cabin where she was treating Joel, though they tried to kill her once they found out who she was. One even shot and killed Callus, Ellie and Joel's horse. Ellie was eventually caught by David and taken to their town. Trying to convince her to join the group, David became deranged and furious when Ellie continually refused his advances and attempted to escape, injuring him out of spite and disgust for his people's cannibalistic ways. When Joel recovered, he found a small group left at the cabins and killed all but two. He then tortured one of them to discover Ellie's location, then beat both of them to death. Joel tracked Ellie to the cannibal's town, where he finds strung-up corpses in a meat locker.

cannibals (5

Ellie ended up escaping after killing James and tricking David into believing she had infected him with a bite. David told a woman to take the children to safety while David and the men searched for Ellie. As she eluded the group through a snowstorm, she heard them complain about David's leadership. Reaching a restaurant, she was cornered by David, managing to hide from him. The pair then engaged in a lethal game of cat and mouse, with Ellie stabbing him only for David to knock them both out. Coming to, David pinned her down. He nearly killed her, but ultimately died when Ellie hacked him to death with his own machete. Ellie then fled the town with Joel, leaving the remaining cannibals without a leader.[3]

cannibals (6

Skills Through David's dialogue, it appears the cannibals can afford to waste certain supplies (apart from food) suggesting that they have lots of equipment. While they do not use armor, they have access to weapons such as pistols, revolvers, hunting rifles, shotguns,[3] and occasionally bows.[4] They also use hatchets, pipes, and 2x4s as melee weapons. However, it appears better equipment, like shotguns and rifles, are only used by scavenging parties that go out hunting for food and supplies. The town watch, by comparison, has most men armed with simple revolvers. However, when Joel finally arrives, some of the watchmen have equipped melee and heavier weapons.[3] The group which tracked Ellie down at the Mountain Plaza mostly used pistols although some used Molotov cocktails, which were highly effective against the infected present in the area.[4]Their leader, David, is menacing, using a machete and a revolver, as well as having a high pain tolerance in combat, resisting being stabbed three times by Ellie. He also possessed a hunting rifle, but admitted that he wasn't a good shot. He was able to handle several infected alongside Ellie, even clickers and a bloater. The cannibals are known for their cowardly nature, fleeing from a recently-recovered Joel despite outnumbering him, preferring to take him by surprise when possible. They are similar to hunters in power but lack numbers in most cases. Much like hunters, they either fear or distrust their leader. They are, however, more diverse as they have more women and children in their group,[fn 2] making the group arguably weaker since not all of the members are suitable for fighting.[3]

cannibals (7

However, the group is well organized and are skilled trackers, an entire search party managing to locate Ellie on at least two occasions and captured her with David's help during the second search. They could even hold their own against several infected,[4] something most other groups have been shown to either struggle with them[8] even the military, who were overpowered by stalkers despite being the best-equipped faction of survivors left.[9] Their milksop character still persists despite this, as some run and hide rather than fight the infected directly, choosing to attack when the infected are a safe distance away.[fn 3] Also, while they tend to easily kill runners, they do have difficulty overpowering clickers; while they can defeat them, the latter typically kills at least one of them before such.[4]Despite being generally weaker than most enemies, the young Ellie struggles to combat them directly, due to her inferior size and strength. It could be argued that this is why David was so difficult to defeat even though he only had a revolver. Compare him to Joel and he could be argued as being much weaker, despite his high pain tolerance. When Ellie does engage them in melee combat, they react in a similar manner as clickers do for Joel, with them blocking her attack after two strikes and either putting her in a chokehold or punching her to the ground.[3]

Notes on Cannibals

Notes This group is never called "cannibals" or "the cannibals" in game. The first canonical use of "cannibals" to refer to this group appeared in 2022 in The Last of Us Part I's Model Viewer on the models "Cannibal (Combat)" and "Cannibal (Chair)". While children are not seen in the cannibal's community, an unused file actually contains a model for a "cannibal child". Though they are not the first enemies shown in-game combating infected, the cannibals are the only enemies where the player can influence their encounters with them in the first game. References

Where the Women??

Despite telling Ellie they Have hungry women and children, you don't see a single woman. it's entirely a group of twenties/thirties/(fourites?) men.

They have a large town

Prompt

David: "Um, name's David, this here's my friend James. We're from a larger group -- women, children. We're all very, very hungry." David: "I'd say we make a pretty good team." Ellie: "Psshh. We got lucky." David: "Lucky? No, no... No such thing as luck. No, you see I believe that everything happens for a reason." David: "Oh...you're awfully quick to judgment. Considering you and your friend killed how many men?" Ellie: "They didn't give us a choice." David: "And you think we have a choice? Is that it? You kill to survive...and so do we. We have to take care of our own. By any means necessary." David: "I know you're not infected. No one that's infected fights this hard to stay alive." David: "I knew you had heart. You know it's okay to give up. It ain't no shame in it. Huh. I guess not. Just not your style is it?" David: "You have no idea what I'm capable of."
