Appearance

Kagaya wears a dark kimono, over which he wears a white haori. He has straight black shoulder-length hair with a straight parting. The upper half of his face is covered with swollen veins of a light purple color due to a birth disease. The irises of his eyes brightened due to blindness that appeared during the progression of the disease. Before that, he had purple eyes.

Personality (in detail)

Kagaya is quite calm. He shows sincere concern for the members of the Demon Slayer corps, even considers them his children. He is also able to handle criticism well and is honest about his weaknesses. He accepted the position of Tanjiro and Nezuko (through Sakonji Urokodaki's letter), and even defended them, despite the fact that the pillars were against it. This shows that he can think about different circumstances, avoiding any preconceptions. His manner of speech, though smooth and gentle, is extremely tactful: Kagaya uses words and intonations so that the person he is talking to listens to him. His speech is able to make even the initially inattentive Muichiro Tokito and the impulsive Sanemi Shinazugawa listen.

Background

He spent every day of his life visiting the graves of dead demon hunters until illness confined him to his bed. As a child, he had two younger brothers, Senri and Akito, but Senri, unable to cope with the thought that he would have to die before he even turned thirty, set fire to the estate of the Ubuyashiki clan at the age of 8, forcing his six-year-old brother Akito to commit double suicide. Their mother died in that fire, and Kagaya was left all alone as a nine-year-old child. When Himejima Gemei first met Kagaya, he was 14 years old and Gemei was 18. According to Gemei, even at that age, Kagaya spoke to people the way they wanted him to. In addition, Ubuyashiki had a very strong intuition and using this gift of foresight avoided many misfortunes. In the Ubuyashiki family, it was customary for the heads of the family to marry only the daughters of priests, since only they could support them while the inherited disease progressed. Plot (part 1)

The arch of the final selection: Kagaya receives a message from the ravens that five students have passed the final selection. As a failure of his words, he offers his and Giya Tomioka's life to the Pillars in case they turn out to be wrong and Nezuko kills a person. In that case, they will be forced to end seppuku's life.
