Gyomei Himejima (悲ひ鳴め嶼じま 行ぎょう冥めい,, Himejima Gyōmei?) is a character in the Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise. He was a demon hunter belonging to the Demon Extermination Corps and Rock Pillar (岩いわ柱ばしら,, Iwa Bashira?).

Appearance

Gyomei was a strong and muscular looking man. He was one of the tallest characters in the series, over two meters tall [4] and the oldest of all the members that make up the Pillars group and by extension the most experienced. He had short black hair with a thick scar that ran horizontally across his forehead. He did not possess irises, mainly because he was blind [5] and they, most of the time, filled with tears when he was in an emotional situation [6]. His characteristic clothing consisted of the classic attire of members of the Demon Extermination Corps. His outfit had no visible customization except for the fact that he used thick bandages to keep his Hakama attached like pants [7]. He didn't wear socks with his Zori sandals [8] that had thick green strings, keeping the sleeves of his jacket rolled up to show off his thick, strong arms. He also carried with him a green Haori [9] with long sleeves and white edges which had the Sanskrits of Buddhism written on each side and printed on the back (in the manga) in a clear allusion to his religiosity. He used to carry a necklace of thick red beads around his neck [10] and was constantly seen holding prayer beads whenever he was not in battle [11]. During the final confrontation against Muzan Kibutsuji, Himejima loses his left leg.

Personality

Gyomei was a very religious person and could constantly be seen frequently uttering the Amitābha mantra in situations that saddened him and offering prayers to the people around him. Most of the time he remained composed, he was kind and very emotional. He cried frequently in all kinds of situations. Despite his short-worded personality and his tendencies to become emotional to the point of tears, Gyomei had an objective and dubious view on the people around him; being fully aware of the possibilities that others, particularly children or those younger than himself, could do when given an opportunity. Due to his experience before becoming a Demon Hunter, he had further reinforced his quietly dubious nature to the point that it took him a while to accept people completely; but once he accepted those around him, he would reject even what others would say about them, fully believing in the person he accepted. Being the most experienced of all the Pillars, he was the most respected by all of his companions. At times, Gyomei acted as the leader of the pillars and even Kagaya Ubuyashiki completely trusted him to convey information that he could not tell others.

Powers and Abilities

Unique Weapon: Unlike other hunters, Gyomei used a Nichirin weapon specially adapted for his aggressive fighting style and his own physical disability, which consisted of a long chain at the ends of which he had a spiked ball and an ax (ono ) similar to a Kusarigama which he could manipulate with great dexterity despite his blindness. Due to his blindness, he relied solely on the sound of the chain to determine the movement of the ax or ball in order to attack. This weapon was forged with the same minerals used in the making of the Nichirin Swords. Its forging was characterized by being of extreme quality and durability, even surpassing the swords designed during the Sengoku Era when sword making was at its peak. Not even Kokushibo, the strongest of the demons that make up the group of the Twelve Demonic Moons, was able to break it[13]. Expert in weapon combat: his ability to use various weapons was exceptional. This placed him as the strongest within the Demon Extermination Corps. Increased physical capabilities: His physical capabilities were at the highest limits of the human condition after years of intense training which allowed him to become part of the Pillars group.

Skills as a swordsman

Being one of the pillars of the Demon Extermination Corps, Gyomei was a fairly competent swordsman despite not using a sword like his companions.[14] According to the claims of Tanjiro Kamado and Inosuke Hashibira, Gyomei was the strongest pillar of his generation[15], which was reaffirmed during his battle against the Upper Moon One, Kokushibo, who upon closer examination was able to notice that Gyomei was trained in all its most predominant aspects until it reached its human limits and that in more than three hundred years, he had never met an opponent of that caliber[16]. As such, he was able to put Kokushibo on the ropes, until he was forced to activate his Mark of the Demon Slayer to confront him when he saw that Kokushibo was beginning to turn the fight in his favor. Because he could not use full focus breathing, he instead achieved a similar state where he had to gather strength by remembering all his past difficulties, which he called Repetitive Movement (反はん復ぷく動どう作さ, , Hanpuku Dōsa?) that allowed him to have a high level of concentration and fully open the five senses, better achieving all his physical abilities and the use of nichirin tools.

During his confrontation with Kokushibo, he was able to awaken his hunter mark which allowed him to enhance his physical capabilities to much greater levels. His mark resembled cracked patterns similar to earth fissures and were located on both forearms [17].
