History

Born in 110 AD, Prince Aemond was the second son and third son of King Viserys I Targaryen and his second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower. When he was born, Prince Aemond was said to be half the size of his brother Aegon, but twice as ferocious.[8] The births of Aemond and his older brother were the cause of some conflict at the court of Viserys I. The king had named Rhaenyra, his only surviving daughter from his first marriage, as his official heir in 105 AD, but refused to alter the order of succession although his second wife gave him sons. This eventually led to the rise of two opposing sides within the court, the Greens (supporters of Queen Alicent and her children) and the Blacks (supporters of Princess Rhaenyra). Furthermore, Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys and Aemond's uncle, was said to be notably cold towards Aemond and Aegon, as their births had caused him to fall further down the line of succession.[9] The feud between Aemond's mother, Alicent, and his older half-sister, Rhaenyra, passed on to their children as well. Aemond and his brothers became bitter rivals of Rhaenyra's three sons, Princes Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey Velaryon, resenting them for stealing their birthright, the Iron Throne. The time the six boys were forced to spend together (for example, attending feasts, training in weapons together, or studying under the same maester) only caused such dislike to increase.[10Over the years, Aemond was subjected to of ridicule by his brothers and nephews, for being the only prince who did not yet have any dragon (Aegon rode Sunfire, Helaena on Dreamfire, even Prince Daeron, younger than Aemond, had Tessarion), and this fact could mark him for life

After Ser Laenor Velaryon's funeral, King Viserys I planned to visit Dragonstone to see if Aemond was "brave enough" to claim a dragon egg for himself. Seeking to prove his boldness, at ten years old, Aemond resolved to claim the oldest and fiercest dragon in the known world, Vhagar, recently riderless since the death of Laena Velaryon. Discovering that his three-year-old nephew Joffrey was spying on him, he slapped him several times and pushed him into a mountain of dragon dung, escaping on Vhagar's back. Upon returning to land, he found that Joffrey and his brothers were waiting for him. He fought them and lost his right eye when Luke took it out with his dagger. As a result of the loss of his eye, people soon began to nickname Aemond with a nickname that would accompany him throughout his life: One-Eyed Aemond. Despite lacking one eye, Prince Aemond became a dangerous warrior under the tutelage of Ser Criston. Cole, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.[12] Aemond was nineteen years old when King Viserys I died. The day after his father's death, Queen Alicent sent Ser Willis Fell, Knight of the Kingsguard, to find Aemond, and discovered the young prince in the armory, preparing for his morning instruction.

Targaryen

House Targaryen is a noble house of Valyrian descent that ruled the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros for nearly three hundred years. Their settlements were the capital of the kingdom King's Landing, the island of Dragonstone and the castle of Summerhaven. Its emblem is a three-headed dragon gules in field sable, representing Aegon I and his sisters Rhaenys and Visenya.[1][2][3] Their motto is Fire and Blood[4] and their ancestral swords of Valyrian steel, both currently whereabouts unknown, are Blackfyre and Dark Sister. The Targaryens are descendants of one of the noble families of the Valyrian Freehold who escaped the Curse of Valyria and settled on the island of Dragonstone. Valyria maintains a strange beauty; The expression "Dragon's Blood" refers to a set of typical features of ancient Valyria: platinum blonde or silver hair and violet, lilac or indigo eyes. Some members of House Targaryen also have a high resistance to heat, although this does not make them immune to fire.[5] Another typical Targaryen trait is the ability to have premonitions through dreams. Some of its members have been prone to madness, presumably caused by their inbreeding. According to King Jaehaerys II: "Madness and greatness are two sides of the same coin and every time a Targaryen is born, the gods toss the coin in the air and the world holds its breath to see which way it will fall.

Customs As well as the colors of their emblem, most Targaryens used black for the color of their armor. Although the Targaryen kings took their settlement at King's Landing, the place where Aegon I and his army first landed in the Seven Kingdoms, their former seat of Dragonstone remained in their possession as well. The latter became the traditional settlement of the Prince of Dragonstone. The Targaryens eventually erected a third settlement, Summerhaven, which was granted to some of the youngest sons of House Targaryen, who bore the title Prince of Summerhaven. House Targaryen worshiped the gods of Valyria. Some time before Aegon I's Conquest, the Targaryens abandoned the Valyrian gods and converted to the Faith of the Seven, the predominant religion in Westeros. However, they followed the Valyrian practice of incestuous marriage, marrying between brothers, first cousins, uncles and nephews, to preserve blood purity. As one of Valyria's dragon lord families, the Targaryens were closer to dragons than other men. They were brought to Westeros and used in battle later in the wars that came. At some point, it became tradition to give a newborn Targaryen a dragon egg. This practice continued even after the death of the last dragon. Deceased Targaryens are traditionally cremated.
