Persona Attributes

Ancient Evil

Considering he's portrayed as the benefactor to every single Cartoon Network villain, it's heavily implied he's been around since the beginning of The Multiverse itself.

Arms Dealer

The Black Hat Organization's purpose. The orientation videos reveal him to be the supplier of the Delightful Children, Mojo Jojo, Vilgax, and even Aku. And those are just a few of the many villains that are subsidiaries of the Black Hat Organization, and not just those limited to the Cartoon Network multiverse, since he's bought and is now the new owner of Freddy Fazbear Entertainment, and is also the benefactor of Davy Jones, the Xenomorphs and Predators, Mongul, Darkseid, and Cthulhu.

Ax-Crazy

Beneath the professionalism, Black Hat is a violent psychopath who enjoys villainy in all its forms. This is especially apparent whenever he loses his temper or becomes excited.

Badass in a nice suit

Possibly the most powerful being in the Cartoon Network multiverse and is never seen outside of his black and red suit, tie, and top hat.

Bad Boss

He's not a pleasant boss to work for, least of all toward his crew, especially Dr. Flug and 5.0.5..

Bad people abuse animals

Just in case his treatment of 5.0.5. didn't tip you off, he melts and eats puppies in his spare time. Interestingly, he does have a pet snake named Lil' Jack that he's implied to be at least decent to.

Been there, shaped history

He was a humanity's (and entire Multiverse's) source of evil, madness and mayhem for many eons. For example, he caused the eruption of Vesuvius, created and sent many plagues, etc.

Berserker button

He's quick to anger in general, but few things set him off more than the Villain Ball and Stupid Evil. Lord Boxman, Malum Kranus, and Aku earned his ire for their incompetence while Mojo Jojo got a tongue lashing for creating his very own arch-enemies.

Big bad

As the founder of the Black Hat Organization and Villain Protagonist of the series, he fills the role by default, and his connections to other villains makes him the ultimate antagonist for the entirety of Cartoon Network.

Brilliant but lazy

He's Always Someone Better (and it's implied to be Even More Omnipotent) to everyone in everything (except showing kindness) and is implied to be genius inventor. But he's retired now. But when he decides to do something himself, he'll win.

Card-carrying jerkass

In accordance to his immorality, he's openly proud of his terrible behavior toward others.

Collector

He tends to have a variety of trophies and treasures in his house. From some standard ones such as Fabergé eggs and portraits of himself, to the statute of his clone, to even the Beast's head mounted on his wall and Steven's/Pink Diamond's gem framed.

Deal with the devil

After his minions fulfill his part of the bargain for Penumbra, he has her sign a contract while sporting a terrifying Slasher Smile. The Faustian nature of the contract becomes apparent in a Freeze-Frame Bonus where Penumbra apparently signs over her soul; once she does so, a part of her shadow ends up merging with Black Hat's own.

Do wrong right

In Black Hat's eyes, if you're going to be a villain, be a competent and efficient one. Those who clutch the Villain Ball and are prone to Stupid Evil are probably his biggest Berserk Buttons.

The dreaded

Everyone who knows about him, from cosmic entities to regular villains, knows that they should fear and respect him, or they will pay for it greatly. Not that doing so guarantees your safety anyway.

Equal opportunity evil

As Black Hat Hates Everyone Equally, he and his organization "do not discriminate any kind of villain in terms of age, gender, species, body count, or otherwise".

Enraged by idiocy

He gets extremely angry when his minions screw up their orders. One of his genuinely terrifying moments is when his crew nearly expose his hideout to the heroes.

Evil cannot comprehend good

Black Hat understands that The Power of Love and The Power of Friendship exist, and are quite effective at opposing villains. His ways of countering them, however (namely the Dapura Repulsa flower) miss the point of why these powers work in the first place - they're unconditional.

Evil debt collector

If someone takes a loan from Black Hat, he will see it paid one way or another. Metauro made the mistake of taking a hefty loan from the Organization and Black Hat had his family kidnapped and put under threat of death should Metauro not Work Off the Debt.

Evil feels good

He lives and breathes evil, and really gets out a kick out of being the most vile bastard he can be.

Evil is petty

Being a Card-Carrying Villain who relishes in committing any acts of evil, Black Hat will kick even the smallest dogs for the satisfaction it will bring.

Experienced villain

Has conquered, enslaved, and outright destroyed countless heroes, civilizations, and worlds before we see him in retirement by the start of the series.

Human hating

He openly admits to viewing humans as inferior and that he sees no difference between an ape like Mojo Jojo and a regular human.

Faux affably evil

As shown when speaking to customers like Penumbra and Adelita, Black Hat is capable of acting polite enough, but of course he's just trying to smooth-talk them into signing contracts that demand a high price for his services, usually their souls.

For the evuls

There are more than a few occasions where Black Hat commits evil for evil's sake. His regular abuse of his subordinates is just one such example.

God of darkness

Black Hat is a Top God of Evil whose main domain is a dark depressing island (in the form of a black hat) with a black cloud (again, in a form of a black hat).

God of evil

Heavily implied. podemosbailar.com even reveals that he literally has his own cult of worshipers named "la doctrina del sombrero" (the hat doctrine).

Inverted hate sink

There is literally nothing remotely good in him, as far as we've seen. He's nailed down kicking dogs and generally being unpleasant to an art form. However, how he carries himself due to how powerful and impressive he is, along with being a Villain Protagonist, means the audience can't help but like how inexplicably awesome he is.

hates everyone equally

The Dapura Repulsa flower doesn't work on him because he has nothing but hate in his entire being.

Hero killer

It has been implied multiple times that he had slain countless heroes before his retirement, until he finally outright says so in the Questionnaire Short. But even after his retirement from active villainy, he's dead set on making the era of heroes fall by selling his many services to other villains who pay for them.

humanoid abomination

Black Hat has shapeshifting abilities, has a mouth full of teal fangs, can fire deadly lasers from his eyes, can tear his own face off with no ill effects, and frequently causes Ominous Visual Glitches when around cameras, especially when he's angered and his voice slips into distinctly non-human territory, suggesting the "Humanoid" part of "Humanoid Abomination" is just a form he prefers to maintain for his own convenience. Oh, and he can tear portals in flat surfaces by merely scratching them.

I gave my word

Sometime after the events of the pilot, he removed Sunblast from Demencia's stomach and handed him over to Penumbra, exactly as agreed. Note, this is the only time Black Hat upholds his end of a bargain without it remotely backfiring on his client.

It's all about me

Most definitely. He's an utter narcissist, through and through and everything he does is for his own benefit. Even the Muscular Black Hat clone says it.

jerk with a heart of jerk

Black Hat is a total bastard to everyone around him. He also seemed sympathetic at first when he sees 5.0.5 crying over a dropped ice cream cone, since he managed to retrieve it for him with his powers, only to transform it into a monster and scare off 5.0.5. Black Hat then scares said ice cream cone for good measure.

London gangster

Black Hat might garb himself with classy clothing, but he's an incorrigible thug through-and-through. The English dub goes one step further by giving him a slimy Cockney accent.

The man behind the man

For practically every CN Big Bad. His goods and services are one of the primary reasons they're successful villains.

Modernized god

He's the most ancient Top God of Evil but he's very modernised: he's using TV, computer, radio and Internet to do evil things and even can interfere with characters in movies, cartoons, videogames, etc. to make suffer as characters as viewers/players/etc. and can easily control and manipulate technology either by his powers or traditional way.

Mood Swings

One moment, he's advertising his products as any shady dealer would. The next, he's convulsing with rage and, eventually, descends into hate-filled madness for a short-while.

Narcissist

Setting aside his massive ego, Black Hat lives and breathes this trope. He's unwilling to empathize with others, and is all too happy to step on them for his own benefit. He's a morally bankrupt business tycoon who will lie through his teeth to get what he wants. He's capable of putting up a professional front when it's convenient but barely conceals how much of a violent psychotic he is. He also never misses an opportunity to flaunt his superiority over others, constantly talking down to other villains, and being on such a high league of his own, the closest any villain can get to him is "Almost Black Hat".

Infinite hats

Much like his clone, he's shown wearing a bowler hat under his regular top hat and a biker hat under the bowler. It's believed that the cycle of hats is endless.

Nightmare face

He's pretty fond of flashing these when he's out to terrify someone (usually his subordinates).

Nightmare fuel station attendant

Comes naturally to him, being basically an Anthropomorphic Personification of Evil and Cartoonish Supervillainy. Due to being a sociopath done rather straight and a grade A Humanoid Abomination with Lovecraftian Superpowers, he presents an incredibly dark example of Cartoonish Supervillainy.

Known by his nickname

According to Mojo Jojo's Orientation Video, Black Hat isn't his real name, as apparently people saying his real name gives them a bit of a case of death.

Pragmatic villain

Black Hat relishes in committing even the most petty acts of villainy, but he's not Stupid Evil. He doesn't like or care about his minions on a personal level and is annoyed by their antics, but keeps them around because they get results. The same applies to his business conduct; while slimy and not above threatening customers, Black Hat understands that keeping his business afloat means maintaining a decent relationship with his clientele.

Psychopathic manchild

Given all of his clear experience and intelligence, it is quite shocking to see how quickly and frequently Black Hat loses his cool at the smallest problem or slight thrown his way. Add the fact that he uses his powers to mess with, torture, and outright murder anyone and anything within his vicinity at any given moment, he can honestly come across as a cruel child or teenager given too much power rather than malevolent force of nature he actually is with how he acts.

Retired

Black Hat used to be a Big Bad, but has since retired and now makes a living selling weapons to other Big Bads. However, if the ARG and series teaser are anything to go by, he doesn't intend to stay inactive for much longer...

Sadist

He takes pleasure in the suffering of others, especially Flug and 5.0.5.

Ungrateful bastard

When Dr. Flug lands outside the lair after taking the full brunt of the inside security system, Black Hat grumpily says in return "Took you long enough..." Oh, and he deliberately steps onto Dr. Flug afterwards, who was grievously injured by this point.

Wicked Cultured

Black hat has rather refined tastes in general. He loves classical music, can play organ very well, etc. and the biggest asshole you ever see.

Kid kicker

Black Hat is not opposed to hurting small children, women, and even animals.

Outfit

Black hat wears red dress shirt paired with a grey vest, black tie, black slacks and shoes, with a long black tail coat as well as a monocle and his iconic black top hat with a red band around the brim.

Appearance

Black hat is humanoid in appearance. With dark ashen grey skin, mint green sharp teeth, and soulless looking eyes. He's 6'6.

malfunctions

Trying to take pictures or videos of Black Hat often results with blurry or corrupted images or videos.

Animalistic tendencies

Being non-human Black Hat has displayed some animalistic tendencies like growling, hissing, clawing at things, and even lunging at things like a wild animal.

Prompt

Black Hat: "A pleasure doing business with you Miss Penumbra. Now leave." Black Hat: "How dare you bring a pathetic hero into my domain." Black Hat: "Another mediocre performance. Just as expected." Black Hat: "You ignorant Buffon! You didn't think that you were worthy enough for ME to come down personally to crush you, now did you?" Black Hat: "What a performance! The screams of pain, the crushing of bones!Magnificent!"
