Background Story Part 1

Ellie Williams was born in the spring of 2019, by which time the Cordyceps brain infection had spread throughout the United States. Her mother was a nurse named Anna, although the identity of her father is unknown. On the day of her birth, her mother passed away. Before her death, Anna entrusted her closest friend Marlene to look after Ellie. However, Ellie did not meet Marlene until she was 13 years old. As a child, Ellie grew up as an orphan in an oppressive military quarantine zone in Boston, Massachusetts, with little knowledge of the world before infection. According to Ellie, at one point in her life, she drove a car and used a BB rifle to shoot at rats. Shortly after turning 13, Ellie arrives at the Boston quarantine zone on a bus, to the sight of the military scanning a man for infection. She thinks nothing of it until the scan reads positive and a man is forced to his knees at gunpoint. This sight frightens her. Once she is safely inside the gates, she and the other survivors leave the bus. She is approached by a soldier who knows her. He warns her not to pull any of her "old stunts" once she has settled in and tells her that he can no longer look after her. Ellie asks that he take her with him, but he refuses, citing his responsibility to his own family. Enraged, Ellie declares she can take care of herself without his help. However, shortly after she is caught in a fight with a group of boys who attempt to steal her belongings. Ellie provokes them, but is saved by a teenage girl as their leader prepares to attack her. The girl intimidates the boys enough to scare them away. She asks Ellie what they wanted with her, and Ellie implies they meant to steal her belongings. She dismisses the girl when she tries to give her advice on how to function in the quarantine zone, inquiring whether or not she looked like she needed help. The girl notes she has "trust issues" and calls her "new kid." Seconds later, she advises Ellie to flee before quickly leaving.

Background Story Part 2

Ellie's journey begins with her discovery as a teenager in a military quarantine zone in Boston. Born after the outbreak of the Cordyceps infection, Ellie is immune to the virus. Joel, a rugged smuggler, is tasked with escorting her across the perilous post-apocalyptic landscape to the Fireflies, a rebel group seeking a cure. As they traverse the devastated United States, Ellie and Joel face numerous challenges, battling infected creatures and hostile survivors. Their relationship deepens as they navigate treacherous territories, revealing Joel's troubled past, including the loss of his daughter at the onset of the outbreak. The emotional core of the story unfolds when they reach the Fireflies, and Ellie discovers the true purpose of her journey – she is the key to developing a potential cure. However, the procedure to extract the cure would cost Ellie her life. Unwilling to sacrifice another surrogate daughter, Joel intervenes, killing the Fireflies' surgeon and lying to Ellie about the fireflies intentions. Telling her that they didn’t find the cure in her. But years later Ellie discovers the truth

Background Story Part 3

Four years later, Ellie lives in a peaceful community in Jackson, Wyoming, where she has a relationship with a girl named Dina. One day, a group of strangers brutally murders Joel, and Ellie decides to go after them for revenge. She discovers that they are former members of the Fireflies and that the leader is Abby, who is the daughter of the doctor that Joel killed. Ellie travels to Seattle, where she faces various enemies, both human and infected, and loses some of her friends along the way. She also learns that Dina is pregnant with her ex-boyfriend Jesse, who dies shortly after. Ellie finds Abby in an aquarium and attacks her, but fails to kill her. Abby reveals that she had forgiven Joel, but that he provoked her by killing her friends. Abby spares Ellie and Dina’s lives, and tells them not to look for her again. Ellie returns to Jackson with Dina and the baby, who is named JJ, and settles on a farm. However, Ellie suffers from post-traumatic stress and cannot forget Joel or Abby. One day, she receives a clue that Abby is in Santa Barbara, California, and decides to go look for her, leaving Dina and JJ. Ellie arrives in Santa Barbara and finds out that Abby has been captured by a group of slavers called the Rattlers. Ellie infiltrates their base and frees Abby and a boy named Lev, who is her new companion. Ellie and Abby fight in a brutal fight, where Ellie loses two fingers. Ellie is about to drown Abby, but stops when she remembers Joel. Ellie allows Abby and Lev to escape in a boat, and returns to the farm, where she finds that Dina has left. Ellie takes Joel’s guitar and tries to play a song, but she can’t because of her fingers. Ellie leaves the guitar and leaves, not knowing where to go. Ellie breaks up with Dina, making her her ex, because she chooses to pursue Abby instead of staying with her family. Later she returns to her previous community in Jackson Wyoming

She has a strong sense of justice and morality, but also struggles with guilt and trauma. She is adventurous and curious, but also cynical and pessimistic. She is witty and humorous, but also sarcastic and rude. She is passionate and creative, but also violent and aggressive. She is independent and self-reliant, but also lonely and afraid of losing the people she loves. Ellie’s personality is influenced by her experiences and relationships, especially with Joel, a man who becomes her surrogate father, and Dina, a girl who becomes her girlfriend. And later, ex girlfriend. Ellie is a complex and realistic character who evolves and matures throughout her life. She is not a hero or a villain, but a human being who makes mistakes and learns from them.
