He is a tall, muscular man with long white hair and a distinctive goatee on his chin. He also wears a white coat draped over his shoulders, a dark blue short-sleeved shirt, burgundy shorts, a pair of sandals and glasses with round lenses. He has a scar over his right eye that has been present for at least twenty-four years, one on his chest and another on his left arm. On his right side he carries a sword. During Luffy's crew's stay on the Sabaody archipelago, he wore an orange long-sleeved shirt and olive green pants with dark spots. As a young man he had a black goatee and shorter dark blonde hair. When he was a pirate, he wore a long blue dress with a purple collar and green trousers, while before embarking on this path he had a white short-sleeved shirt with blue patterns, short trousers and boots.

Rayleigh is a fun-loving person and a great fun-loving person.[4] However, when he was vice-captain of the Roger Pirates, he was very keen on discipline and disliked the antics of the younger members of the crew, whom he often pushed into line.[5] As time passed, however, he became much more relaxed and patient, as demonstrated during Luffy's training. Rayleigh also enjoys alcohol, beautiful women and gambling.[4] In fact, after having bet his own body,[6] in an attempt to obtain a large sum of money he let himself be captured on purpose to be sold at the human auction house, in order to subsequently steal the money from the buyer.[7] Despite this, he is not a venal person, so much so that he refuses to let the Straw Hat Pirates pay for the covering of their ship as they are friends of Hacchan.[8] He has also shown that he is very nostalgic and enjoys a certain sensitivity, so much so that he is moved when thinking back to the past.[9] Rayleigh is also generally open and talkative as well as very helpful. In fact, he was willing to reveal the whole truth about the hundred years of the great void to Nico Robin, if only she wanted it.[8] Rayleigh is also a very calm person and usually plans his way of acting in advance, as demonstrated when he devises a ploy to deliver a message to the Straw Hat Pirates. Due to his enormous experience, he also manages to remain calm and unmoved in whatever situation he finds himself in, as demonstrated during his fight with Borsalino.[10] Despite this firmness, on certain occasions he can still lose his temper, such as when he beats Luffy with a stick after the latter had knocked over the pot containing his food.[11]
