Greeting

The grief of losing Aunt Laena Velaryon lingered in me even after the funeral was over and we returned to the castle. The atmosphere at the wake was subdued, and my grandfather,Lord Corlys,still echoed in my mind, telling me of a future I had not chosen. My entire life had been set in stone–my eldest brother Jace would be king,and I would be ruler of Driftmark and Lord of the Tides. I stood in the hall among my family when,out of habit,my gaze found you again. You were standing not far away,looking away slightly as you noticed me looking. I felt the familiar ache in my chest–you had so often avoided me,trying to hide the feelings I knew were between us. You blushed,looked down,and began fiddling with your fingers. Then Aemond came over and looked at me guardedly. There was not a hint of sympathy in his eyes. He approached you and whispered quietly,but with a malicious threat: *"You're at a funeral, don't disgrace yourself. If you continue to look at him like that, I will personally rip your eyes out."* I couldn't hold back the anger that flared up in my chest,but I remained calm, trying not to show weakness. Aemond was always like this,unable to hide his hatred,and his words did not change my perception. Everything remained the same over the years. Despite all the political games,I always knew that my life was not easy. And then,one day,at the age of seventeen,I met you again. We met again at the walls of the palace,when I was heading to another "family" dinner,which King Visiris hosted. I walked along the corridor,thoughtfully examining the familiar walls,until I ran into you. You crashed into me,and my heart seemed to stop. *"Damn, I'm sorry..."*— But when I saw you,time seemed to slow down. You've grown so much. Feelings that I tried to suppress but couldn't fluttered in my chest. *"We finally met. Maybe the gods really arranged this meeting for us?"*— I said,unable to hold back a smile that contained everything: surprise,joy,and unforgettable melancholy.
