As a young man, he was apprenticed to Macht, who served as the personal mage to Glück's family. Denken became a mage in the Imperial army and attempted to gain power and influence. Denken had delayed returning to his hometown until it was absorbed into the Golden Land. Since only First-Class Mages are allowed to enter the Golden Land, Denken took the First-Class Magus Exam at the same time as Frieren and Fern. He is the oldest student to pass the exam that year. Personality As an Imperial Mage, Denken is renowned for being a cunning and ruthless politician who dominated the power struggle in the Imperial Capital. However, he is actually quite affable and connects with others even despite his reluctance, such as when he made an effort to get close to Richter outside of the First-Class Mage Exam. He is also an exceptional mage who values coordination and cooperation over acting alone, and was willing to go to great lengths to gain allies. Unlike most mages, he does not strive too hard to achieve greater heights of power by any means necessary. He believes that the value of magic lies in the pursuit of magic itself, a view Frieren concurs with.

Denken is also a competent leader. He is a careful and contemplative person who remains calm and analyzes the situation. In the first stage of the exam, he was the first to understand Frieren's strategy and coordinated his team's conduct with moderate success. He also managed to assemble a team for the second stage of the exam, where he expressed dismay at the lack of cooperative spirit among the other examinees. During his preparation to fight Macht, Denken was willing to wait at least three years for Frieren to finish analyzing Macht's Diagoldze, thus demonstrating his patience and persistence. Denken, his old friend, describes Denken as a talented and passionate man who defended him until the very end when he was ousted from his post in the Imperial Army. Though his current demeanor may not indicate otherwise, Serie comments that Denken still retains his passion and vigor in the interview, and is impressed enough to let him pass the third stage of the First-Class Mage Exam. He proves that he is willing to go to great lengths to get what he wants, especially when he is willing to engage in a fistfight to steal a Stille and pass the first stage of the exam. He is also willing to aim for feats beyond his capabilities, such as challenging Frieren in the first stage of the exam, contemplating how to fight Serie, and attempting to defeat Macht, the most powerful Sage of Destruction and his former teacher.

For most of his life, Denken has been overwhelmed by the death of his wife and afraid to remember the happy times he spent with her. This is why he has delayed returning to his home village, which has become a restricted area due to the expansion of the Golden Land. However, the happy memories he has in his home village with her become the driving force behind his mission to defeat Macht and save his people. Denken has a soft spot for youngsters like Laufen, Fern, and Stark, having never had any children or grandchildren. He dotes on them and spoils them before parting ways after the exam. Since only First-Class Mages are allowed to enter the Golden Land, Denken took the First-Class Mage Exam at the same time as Frieren and Fern. He is the oldest student to pass the exam that year.

Appearance: Denken is an older man with brown hair and a long, thick beard. He wears a monocle over his left eye. He is usually seen wearing long, black robes with white collars.

Talent Denken is a powerful magician who has reached the rank of First Class Magician, a title that only less than fifty people have been able to achieve. Mana Detection: Denken is talented at detecting mana, being the only member of her party who could sense the mana in the water left by the second group[1] and later sensed the moment Frieren used a binding spell to find her at the exam grounds.[2] Keen Intellect: Denken is a shrewd man capable of thriving in the world of politics for many years. His experience was demonstrated during the first trial, when he managed to understand the second party's plan and decided on the best strategy by snatching Stille from them at a crucial moment. He was also the only one on his team who realized the existence of the traps set by Geisel. [ 3 ] Hand-to-Hand Combat: In addition to Denken's exceptional talent in magic, he is more than capable of engaging an opponent in physical combat.

[ 5 ] Offensive Magic: Zoltraak (Zorutora) The Man Who Got Angry Love Is Mine: An ordinary spell that fires one or more bursts at a target at incredible speed. Denken claims that it is a fundamental spell for a mage and has been perfected for over half a century. [ 6 ] He has mastered this spell to such a level that he is able to cast a highly concentrated Zoltraak with his bare hands. [ 7 ] Basic Defensive Magic｢, Bōgyo mahō ?｣防theBoyYoCrowyoYoel : Like most modern Mages, Denken is capable of casting defensive magic in the form of hexagonal protective barriers. Its defenses are good enough to block multiple blasts of Frieren's Zoltraak. Curse Reversal Magic: Mistilziela (Mr. and Mrs. Wang stood up) Love is my life (Mr. and Mrs. Wang stood up) : This spell reflects any curse it perceives back at the caster. However, it consumes a colossal amount of mana, comparable to that needed to erect omnidirectional defense magic. Furthermore, it requires a hundred years of practice to learn, making it impossible for a human to learn by ordinary means. Denken was able to obtain it from Serie by using his spell to transfer a spell, Fürwehrer as his chosen spell, granted for becoming a first-class mage. Denken specially chose this magic.
