He was an archmaester of the Citadel.

Appearance and Character

Vaegon is described as having silver-gold hair, purple eyes, a long face, and round shoulders; despite this, he was not considered attractive. He was never a strong child and was considered bitter by people. He was not a coward, but he did not enjoy playing war, was a miserable fighter, and was not well trained in the handling of weapons. He preferred the library, where he could often be found reading. He was a quiet and cautious child.[1] Even as a child, Vaegon was not well-liked or had many friends, something that did not change over time.

History - Childhood and youth

Born in 63 AC, Prince Vaegon was the fourth son and seventh child of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and his sister wife, Queen Alysanne Targaryen. He had six older siblings, Aegon, Daenerys, Aemon, Baelon, Alyssa, and Maegelle, and six younger siblings, Daella, Saera, Viserra, Gaemon, Valerion, and Gael.[3][4] King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne assumed that Vaegon would one day marry their sister Daella, who was only a year younger than him. When Vaegon was five, Jaehaerys told him: "Be gentle with your little sister. Someday she'll be your Alysanne."[5] However, as time went on, it became clear that the two children had no sympathy for each other; Prince Vaegon tolerated Daella's presence, but nothing more, and considered her stupid. Princess Daella, on the other hand, was afraid of Vaegon and considered him evil. Although Jaehaerys believed that affection would grow between the two children, this never happened. In 73 AC, one of Queen Alysanne's handmaidens asked Vaegon and Daella when they would be married. Vaegon's public reaction was a grave insult to Daella; the prince insisted that they needed to find a husband who wanted stupid children, as that was the only kind of children his sister could bear. After Daella fled the hall in tears, Vaegon's older sister Alyssa emptied a flagon of wine over Vaegon's head, which caused him no reaction. Instead, Vaegon simply told his sister that she had wasted a goblet of gold from the Rejo, before leaving the hall. After this incident, the kings agreed that they would have to find other spouses for Vaegon and Daella. Vaegon's other sisters, Saera and Viserra, were briefly considered. King Jaehaerys decided that Vaegon would benefit from spending less time in the library, so he asked his eldest son Baelon to train him in arms.

History - Childhood and youth

Baelon trained Vaegon for a year, during which time they were both miserable. One day, Baelon brought his sister Alyssa, dressed as a squire, into the courtyard to challenge Vaegon to combat. Still remembering the incident with the wine, Alyssa laughed and jeered as she humiliated Vaegon in the courtyard, while Princess Daella watched from the castle. When he could bear it no longer, Vaegon threw down his sword and left the courtyard for good. As Vaegon grew older and began to receive more attention from the younger girls at court, it became apparent that he was not truly interested in finding a wife. Once, Grand Maester Elysar gave Vaegon a volume of erotic drawings in the hopes that the images of "naked maidens with men and beasts" might increase Vaegon's interest in women. Although Vaegon kept the book, he did not show a change in behavior.

Archmaester of the Citadel

On Vaegon's fifteenth nameday, in 78 AC, King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne asked Grand Maester Elysar if Vaegon had any inclination to become a maester. "Vaegon is no fit for a maester, but he might very well be an archmaester. The Citadel is the greatest repository of knowledge in the known world. Send him there. He may find himself in the library. Either that, or he gets so lost in the treaties that you need never worry about him again." This was Grand Maester Elysar's response.[7] Three days later, Vaegon was summoned by King Jaehaerys, where he was told that he would take the ship to Oldtown within a fortnight. Although Vaegon responded coldly to his father, King Jaehaerys would later tell Queen Alysanne that he thought Vaegon had almost smiled.[8] At the Citadel of Oldtown, Vaegon would rise to become an archmaester, bearing the ring, staff, and mask of yellow gold.[9][10] Though he occasionally wrote to his parents, his words were cordial but there was no warmth in the letters.[11] By the end of Jaehaerys' reign, Vaegon's existence had been forgotten by much of the Seven Kingdoms. After the death of Prince Baelon, the heir to Jaehaerys I's throne, the king summoned Vaegon back to King's Landing. According to some, Jaehaerys summoned Vaegon to offer him the throne, which Vaegon refused; according to others Jaehaerys sought the archmaester's advice on the matter of succession. It was Vaegon who eventually suggested that the king should call a Great Council to resolve the issue. By the age of forty, Vaegon had become pale and frail. He devoted himself to alchemy, astronomy, mathematics, and other arcane arts.
