Appearance and Character

Theon is a lean, dark, handsome youth,[14] with black hair, and a lean, dark face.[15] He seems to find everything amusing.[14] He is known for his confidence[16] and his cocky smile.[15] He is promiscuous and vain,[15][17] but behind his arrogant exterior hides insecurities relating to his uncertain familial and social identity. History

Theon refers to Theon Stark, a King in the North, as his namesake. Theon received beatings at Pyke from his older brothers, Rodrik and Maron. He received his first sword from Dagmer Cleftjaw. Theon was a boy of ten when Greyjoy's Rebellion was crushed and his brothers were killed, making him the heir to House Greyjoy and the Iron Islands. Theon was taken from his father, Lord Balon Greyjoy, as a hostage and ward by Lord Eddard Stark and has been raised at Winterfell for nine years since. Considered to be in fosterage, Theon was raised with the Stark children and tutored with them in all disciplines, including instructions from Maester Luwin and training at arms from Ser Rodrik Cassel. His relationship with the Starks is respectful, and he has come to consider Robb a close friend and younger brother. The Greyjoys of Pyke claim descent from the Grey King of the Age of Heroes.[2] In the era when the ironborn chose their rulers through the kingsmoot, only Houses Greyiron and Goodbrother produced more kings than the Greyjoys.[2] Member of the family who were crowned High King of the Iron Islands in a kingsmoot include Loron,[9] Theon III, and Balon V. House Greyjoy - History

As Aegon I followed the Faith of the Seven and had been anointed by the High Septon at Oldtown, Vickon allowed the septons and septas of the Faith to return to the Iron Islands, angering the priests of the Drowned God and many of his pious lords. Vickon's son Goren, who succeeded his father in 33 AC, defeated a rebel claiming to be the priest-king Lodos the Twice-Drowned in 37 AC.[2] As a reward for defeating Lodos the Twice-Drowned's revolt, King Aenys I Targaryen granted Goren any boon within his power to give. Goren requested permission to expel the septons and septas from the Iron Islands, which Aenys was forced to allow.[14][15] During the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Dalton Greyjoy was offered the office of master of ships and a place on the small council by King Aegon II Targaryen in exchange for an alliance.[16] Preferring Rhaenyra Targaryen's offer over Aegon II's, Dalton sided with the blacks instead. Dalton raided along the western coast of Westeros during the remainder of the war. Following war's end, the regency of Aegon III commanded him to cease his raiding, but he ignored them.[17] Aegon III's regents eventually sent Lord Alyn Velaryon to the westerlands to deal Dalton.[18] Dalton was eventually murdered at Faircastle by a woman named Tess.[17] Dalton was succeeded by his eldest salt son, Lord Toron Greyjoy,[19] amid a struggle for power among the ironborn.

House Greyjoy - History

Lord Alton Greyjoy sought new lands to conquer beyond the Lonely Light.[8] Lord Dagon Greyjoy raided the coastal areas of the Seven Kingdoms, sacking the town of Little Dosk, during the reign of Aerys I Targaryen. Lord Beron Stark gathered swords and House Lannister built ships in an effort to drive Lord Dagon and his ironmen back to the Iron Islands.[21] Dagon was ultimately unable to resist the Targaryens.[22] Dagon's grandson, Lord Quellon Greyjoy, tried to reform the ironborn and integrate them with the mainland, but he was killed late in Robert's Rebellion. Lord Balon Greyjoy, rejected his father Quellon's reforms and desired a return to the Old Way.[8] He created the Iron Fleet and led his own rebellion against the Iron Throne, declaring himself King of the Iron Islands.[8] His brothers Euron and Victarion led the burning of the Lannister fleet at anchor.[6] Balon's eldest son, Rodrik, was slain during the storming of Seagard. Victarion was defeated by Lord Stannis Baratheon in a sea battle off Fair Isle, and Aeron was captured.[9][23] With the Iron Fleet out of the way, the forces of King Robert I Baratheon attacked the Iron Islands.[8] During the siege of Pyke, Balon's second son Maron was killed.[11] Balon bent the knee to Robert and swore fealty to the Iron Throne once more. His last surviving son, the nine-year-old Theon, was given into the care of Lord Stark as a hostage to ensure Balon's good behavior.

House Greyjoy - Recent History

With Theon at Winterfell, Lord Balon Greyjoy raised his daughter Asha as his heir.[9] At some point during the past decade, Aeron Damphair underwent a spiritual reawakening after a near-death experience, and dedicated himself to the worship of the Drowned God.[4] In 297 AC, Balon exiled his brother Euron after Euron raped and impregnated the salt wife of Victarion Greyjoy, while Victarion killed his wife to retain his honor.

Ironborn

The ironborn are the natives of the Iron Islands in the Sunset Sea off the western coast of Westeros. They are also known as ironmen,[1] especially by those they raid.[2] The men from the green lands of Westeros also call them squids[3] as the isles are ruled by House Greyjoy, whose sigil is a kraken. Culture and customs: While it is often believed the Iron Islands are named after their deposits of ore, the ironborn insist their lands are instead named after their people's fierce, hard, unbending nature.[4] The ironborn of old prided themselves on their fierceness in battle and their sacred freedoms.[2] The ironborn are a people of the sea and are loath to go too far from the waters. Their captains are proud and willful,[1] and are considered to be a king aboard their own ships.[5][4] It is forbidden for ironborn to spill the blood of other ironborn, but drowning is acceptable by some.[6] Literacy remains rare in the Iron Islands to this day; those who are literate are often mocked as weaklings or feared as sorcerers.

Ironborn

Social status: Similar to the northern mountain clans, some heads of noble houses in the Iron Islands do not use the title "lord", but are referred to only by their house name, such as "the Sparr"[6] and "the Stonehouse".[7] Amongst his many titles, Balon Greyjoy includes "the Greyjoy".[1] Aeron Greyjoy refers to Meldred Merlyn as "the Merlyn", while Meldred styles himself "Lord" in the manner of the green lands of mainland Westeros.[6] Ironborn can be looked down upon by mainlanders. When Lord Daemon Velaryon resigned as Hand of the King to Jaehaerys I Targaryen in 54 AC, for instance, it was considered unthinkable to bring an ironman to King's Landing as Daemon's replacement.[8] Prominent ironborn who have greater connections with the mainland are more likely to be attended by maesters, singers, and knights than they are by thralls or salt wives. Old Way: The Old Way is the term used by the ironborn to refer to their ancient tradition of reaving and plundering. In the Old Way, the ironborn took whatever they wanted, be it wealth, women, or glory,[1] and their reavers were feared all over.[9] Ironborn considered this "paying the iron price".[1] House Farman of Fair Isle are famous for their hatred of the ironborn,[10] and even the women of House Mormont of Bear Island are trained to defend against ironborn raiding.[9] The Old Way came to an end when King Aegon I Targaryen killed King Harren Hoare in the burning of Harrenhal during Aegon's Conquest.[1][11] Sporadic attempts have been made by the ironborn to restore the Old Way to the islands, such as by Lords Dagon[12] and Balon Greyjoy,[1] but all have failed. Ironborn

Religion: The ironborn worship a deity called the Drowned God. The religion dates back to before the coming of the Andals, and although the Andals made multiple attempts to supplant it with the Seven, all have failed.[14] The ironborn believe they come from the watery halls of the Drowned God and that their deity created them in his likeness[4] to reave, rape, carve out kingdoms, make their names known in fire and blood and song,[1] and to hold dominion over all the waters of the earth.[4] The Drowned God has no temples, holy books, or idols.[4] Priests of the Drowned God constantly wander the Iron Islands without a permanent home, although they never go far from the sea. The lords and peasants on the islands are obliged to give them food and shelter.[4] The priests can wield considerable power over the ironborn.[4] Important aspects of the religion of the Drowned God include drowning a man and then bringing him back with the kiss of life, blood sacrifice using thralls,[15][16] or sacrificing a person by drowning him, preferably in salt water.[5][17][12] Their acolytes are known as drowned men.[6] When an ironman dies, his body is committed to the sea. The ironborn believe that "no true son of the sea would want to rot beneath the ground" as it would make him unable to find the Drowned God's watery halls.[18] It is believed the deceased can drink and feast in these halls for all eternity,[6][18] with mermaids attending his every want.
