Personal Information

Name: Valarr Targaryen Filiation: House Targaryen Family: Baelor Targaryen - Father Jena Dondarrion - Mother Matarys Targaryen - Brother Kiera of Tyrosh - Wife Alias: The Young Prince State: Dead Part of Privy Council Death 209 AD in King's Landing Origin: King's Landing Qualification: Prince of Dragonstone Hand of the King Prince Valarr Targaryen , known as the Young Prince , was the eldest son of Prince Baelor Targaryen and Lady Jena Dondarrion . He had a younger brother, Matarys. His personal emblem was the three-headed Targaryen dragon of gules on a sable background, with a gules border.

Appearance and Character

Valarr is described as a man much like his father, though shorter and thinner. He had dark hair, streaked with gold and silver, and blue eyes. [4] At tournaments Valarr wore black armour, and his helmet was adorned with a shining three-headed dragon, with outstretched wings, enamelled in bright red. Valarr's horse was also black as night, and very swift. [5] According to Ser Duncan the Tall, Valarr was a warrior fit as a knight , unlike his father, Baelor Targaryen , who was the greatest and best of his time. Valarr was considered a bold man.

History

Valarr was married to Kiera of Tyrosh, with whom he had several stillborn children. The Errant Knight In 209 AC , Prince Valarr was one of Lord Ashford 's daughter's original champions at the start of the Tourney at Ashford , but his status as a Targaryen prince, grandson of King Daeron II Targaryen and future heir to the Iron Throne , prevented him from facing dangerous opponents. He won at least nine jousts, including those against Ser Abelar Hightower and Lord Gawen Swann , remaining champion after the first few jousts of the day. During the Seventh Trial of Ser Duncan the Tall, Valarr's father, Prince Baelor Breakspear took part as the seventh knight on Dunk's side. However, since Baelor had not expected to fight in the tourney, he had not brought any armor with him. Thus, he borrowed his son Valarr's armor, causing Dunk to briefly believe that Valarr had come to the trial to defend him. Baelor died during the trial, and Prince Valarr watched over his lifeless body at the funeral. When Dunk tried to pay his respects, Valarr scorned him, claiming that his father would have been a great king. The Loyal Sword Valarr appears to Ser Duncan the Tall in a dream, telling him that his father Prince Baelor would have been the greatest king since Aegon the Conqueror . He was likely named Hand of the King in his father's place. He died during the Great Spring Sickness, just hours before his grandfather King Daeron II Targaryen. The Mysterious Knight While travelling past a head impaled on a pike, Dunk recognises the priest who had been preaching three days earlier about how Bloodraven had killed Prince Valarr's children in their mother's womb. The priest went on to suggest that Bloodraven was responsible for Valarr's death as well.

Appearance

Valarr looked much like his father Baelor, though he was smaller and thinner. He had brown hair, with a streak of silver-gold running through it. He had blue eyes.[7] Valarr wore black armor and carried a black lance during tourneys. His horse was also black, as well as its trappings. Atop his black helm was the three-headed dragon of House Targaryen, enameled in a rich red.

History

Prince Valarr was born the eldest son of Prince Baelor Targaryen, and his wife, Lady Jena Dondarrion. He had one younger brother, Prince Matarys. At some point, Valarr was married to Kiera of Tyrosh.[5] They had sons, but all were stillborn.[1] Ashford Tourney In 209 AC, Valarr was one of the original champions for the daughter of Lord Ashford at the start of the tourney at Ashford Meadow. However, his status as a Targaryen prince, grandson of King Daeron II Targaryen, and future heir to the Iron Throne, prevented him from facing dangerous opponents. He won at least nine jousts against "undistinguished foes", including Ser Abelar Hightower and Lord Gawen Swann, and remained a champion after the first day's jousting. During Ser Duncan the Tall's trial of seven, Valarr's father, Prince Baelor Breakspear, took part as the seventh knight on Dunk's side. However, as Baelor had not expected to fight in the tourney, he had not brought any armor to Ashford with him; therefore he borrowed Valarr's armor. Thus when Baelor first appeared on the field, Dunk briefly believed Valarr was coming to champion him. Baelor died in the trial, and Valarr stood vigil by his body at the funeral. When Dunk tried to offer his sympathies, Valarr dismissed him.[7] Death and legacy Valarr died in 209 AC from the Great Spring Sickness, as did his younger brother Matarys, and their grandfather, King Daeron II Targaryen.[6] In 211 AC, Duncan had a nightmare where the dead Valarr berated him with the same words he had used at Baelor's funeral.[6] In 211 AC, Duncan and Prince Aegon Targaryen heard a hunchbacked septon in Stoney Sept preach that the Hand of the King, Brynden Rivers, had killed Valarr's sons in their mother's womb, and suggest that Brynden was responsible for Valarr's death. The septon was later beheaded for speaking treason.

Quotes

He is beating old men and upjumped squires, and a few lords of high birth and low skill. The truly dangerous men are riding past his shield as if they do not see it.[7] —thoughts of Duncan the Tall My father was only nine-and-thirty. He had it in him to be a great king, the greatest since Aegon the Dragon. Why would the gods take him, and leave you? Begone with you, Ser Duncan. Begone.[7] —Valarr to Duncan the Tall His hands are scarlet with a brother's blood, and the blood of his young nephews too. A shadow came at his command to strangle brave Prince Valarr's sons in their mother's womb. Where is our Young Prince now? Where is his brother, sweet Matarys? Where has Good King Daeron gone, and fearless Baelor Breakspear? The grave has claimed them, every one.[1] —the hunchbacked septon
