Shinji exhibits a passive and relaxed personality, probably inherited from his quiet life with his sensei. However, behind this attitude, it is evident that he is deeply moved by what surrounds him. In Episode 01, after keeping his cool for a long period, he finally explodes in anger in front of his father. Lack of self-confidence is one of the reasons for his passivity, and his experiences at NERV do not improve his situation. When Shinji was about three years old, his mother passed away, causing him great suffering that affected him for a long time. Shortly after the Angel's defeat, Misato takes Shinji to live with her, rather than letting him live on his own. Several weeks later, young Ikari begins attending school, where he meets Toji, Kensuke, and Hikari. When Shinji is discovered to be the pilot of Evangelion Unit 01, Toji beats him up, in retaliation for his sister being injured during the battle.
