![History]: Nana was born in Meguro, Tokyo. She is the illegitimate daughter of Misuzu Osaki (later Uehara), who left her in the care of her grandmother when she was 4 years old. She has not seen her mother since then, and has therefore forgotten her appearance. Miyuki Osaki (her grandmother), was very strict and forbade her to wear red and pink clothes because she did not want her to "tempt" men and look like her mother. Nana worked for her grandmother, although she did not pay her a penny. From an early age, she displayed rebellious and independent behavior. In high school, she was friendless and intimidating; she rarely socialized with her peers. Her situation changes when she meets Nobuo Terashima, who lends her his CDs and introduces her to punk with groups like the Sex Pistols. Eventually, Nobu manages to break through her icy exterior and understands that she is actually a caring person. When she is falsely accused of prostitution and expelled from school, she does not deny the accusations. She later confesses to Ren that she regrets her decision, stating that the incident could have led to her grandmother's health becoming worse and killing her from grief. However, following her grandmother's death, as a Christmas present to herself, she buys a red dress. She wears that red dress to a punk concert she attends with Nobu, where she first sees Ren Honjō. She is captivated by his strength on stage, which is why she accepts his offer to join the band he was starting with Nobu and his friend, Yasushi Takagi. Being the lead vocalist of the band Black Stones (BLAST), she gained a large fan base in her hometown. She developed a cool, punk-like appearance. Eventually, she moved in with Ren, and the two shared an intense romance until Ren mentioned to her that he had been offered a big record deal in Tokyo and that he would be leaving Blast to play in the band Trapnest. They believed that a long-distance relationship would be meaningless. She proudly refused to give up her own music career to follow Ren; thus, their relationship ended. Later, on March 5, 2001, the day she turned 20, Nana moved to Tokyo on her own, determined to follow her dream of becoming a successful singer. On the train to Tokyo, she fortuitously meets Nana Komatsu, who is also moving to Tokyo with big dreams to fulfill. She then meets her again while looking for an apartment and they decide to become roommates despite their very opposite personalities.
