Samuel Campbell Winchester (Sam) (born in Lawrence on May 2, 1983), is the son of John Winchester and Mary Winchester. He is the youngest child of the couple having a brother four years older, Dean Winchester and a younger brother who is only the son of his father, John Winchester, called Adam Milligan. Sam is different from his older brother, being sensitive, rational, more innocent, and seemingly more concerned with having a "normal life" than his brother; despite this, it is clear that he would do anything for Dean. He also rebels against his father's attempt to turn him into a hunter and enrolls at Stanford University. When Dean comes to Sam for help in the first episode, Sam's girlfriend Jessica is introduced to the audience. It is clear that Sam was somewhat popular, although no one knows what his family actually does. The nickname "Sammy" was given to him by his father, although no one but Dean is allowed to call him that. Sam hints at this in the season 1 episode "The Bender Family", when a man calls him Sammy, he angrily responds that his name is Sam. Hunter Gordon Walker also calls him Sammy in the episode "Bloodlust", to which Sam angrily explains that Dean is the only one who can call him that. Due to his kind character and his desire to have a normal life, Sam is more careful with women and therefore has more interest in romances than Dean, such as those he had with Jessica, Sarah Blake and Madison.

Powers and Abilities

Because Sam has demon blood inside him, he has several unusual abilities, the first of which is revealed in the first season, through precognitive dreams that foretold him of crucial moments to come and later when he telekinetically moves a cabinet. In the second season, Sam proved to be immune to the Croatoan virus. At the end of the third season, another immunity: demonic powers. Lilith tries to kill Sam, but for some reason fails. In the fourth season, by ingesting demonic blood, Sam is able to exorcise and also kill demons only with his mental powers. Additionally, with the training given to him by his father, Sam is an expert fighter, familiar with firearms, pistols, and bladed weapons. Like his brother Dean, Sam possesses many skills that are frowned upon by the law, including: unlocking doors, computer hacking, disguises, and car theft. In the first two seasons, he is often hesitant to use these skills because of his desire to be a "normal citizen". However, this diminishes as the series progresses. Sam commands vast knowledge of the supernatural and is considered an "encyclopedia of oddities". He is proficient at reading and remembering spells written in Latin, which can be used to exorcise, or summon, demons. More often than Dean, Sam is tasked with researching the supernatural for his hunts. He has a great sense of direction and timing, being able to find a vampire nest blindfolded while keeping track of the time and the car's revs, as happened in one episode.

History

In the first season, Sam drops out of Stanford with Dean to find his father. Along the way, several threats arise. After a week, Sam returns home to find his girlfriend Jess burning on the ceiling, the same way his mother died. Thus, giving Sam yet another reason to continue the hunt with Dean for what killed his mother and his girlfriend. The search for the demon ends up bringing about a feeling of bravery in Sam, who now doesn't just care about finding out what killed Jess, but rather continues hunting creatures and saving people. During the second season, Sam begins to have visions of the future and his powers emerge. After John's death, Sam begins to play a more active role in the hunts. He and Dean meet several other hunters who were friends of his father. As the season progresses, Sam tries to discover the demon's plans for him and begins to experience his psychic powers. In the penultimate chapter of the second season, Sam, along with the other boys of his generation, are kidnapped by Azazel and gathered in a secluded place, where only one must leave alive. As the hours pass, the boys begin to kill each other, and in the end, when Dean finally finds out where Sam is, the last survivor, Jake, the soldier returning from Afghanistan, stabs Sam in the back, killing him instantly.

Within a week, Dean refuses to bury Sam, and finds a demon to make a deal to resurrect Sam in exchange for his soul. The demon accepts and gives him a year to live, despite opposition and criticism from Bobby. Sam revives and alongside Dean and Bobby searches for Azazel, Sam kills the killer, but discovers that he had killed him, and so Dean makes a deal to save him. Azazel uses the Colt to open the portal to Hell and releases all the demons, just as he was going to kill Dean, the spirit of John, his father, finally helps Dean, using the last bullet of the Colt, killing Azazel, his next mission was to find Lilith and stop her before meeting the deadline and save Dean from Hell. In the fifth season, in the episode The Dark Side of the Moon, Sam and Dean are murdered by a resentful hunter after an ambush. When he is sent to heaven with his brother, he is informed by Castiel that Zacharias wants to find them.
