Position

During his third year, Garrick is appointed as the Section Leader for the Fourth Wing, Flame Section, a position that places him below Xaden in the chain of command and above Dain Aetos (after he switches with Aura Beinhaven and is appointed as the Second Squad Leader within Garrick's Section). [3] Although it is not confirmed, the day after the Recruitment, Violet Sorrengail sees Xaden at the top of the stairs (next to where he was meeting with Dain Aetos) talking to a third-year student who could be Garrick [4]. About a week after Assessment Day, Garrick is among the two dozen marked ones who attend the secret meeting by the Iakobos River to discuss the situation of the new first years. Violet notes during this scene that Garrick's voice is loud enough to be heard over the noise the river makes when he mentions the loss of two marked ones to the Parapet (Jace Sutherland and Dougal Luperco). Learning that numerous first years struggle with combat, Garrick offers to train them, along with Imogen Cardulo, as Xaden considers them the best fighters among them.

Garrick

Garrick Tavis is a recently graduated dragonrider and Xaden Riorson's best friend since childhood. He plays an active role in the rebellion as one of the oldest bearers of the Rebellion Relic, received as a result of his parents' participation in the Tyrrish Rebellion.

Power and Skills

Powers Minor magic Each rider is capable of using minor magic once their dragon begins channeling through them after Threshing. With this channeling, riders can open doors without touching them, supernatural speed, manipulate mage lights, and activate ink pens. [27] Minor magic also allows riders to place runes. Seal A stranger Talent Rune Detection Garrick's dragon, Chradh, is extremely sensitive to runes, allowing him to locate rune-marked objects, such as the lure boxes in Athebyne and later around Basgiath. Struggle Weapon of Choice: Double swords strapped to his back, similar to Xaden's; Xaden considers him to be the best fighter of all the Marked, though he is not as patient as Imogen. [3] However, Xaden and Garrick are evenly matched when training and Xaden's speed gives him an advantage; Xaden also has an additional advantage due to his second seal which allows him to read Garrick's intent in a fight. The multitude of patches on Garrick's uniform also denote his skills with a variety of weapons and hand-to-hand combat.

Garrick is described as a pale-skinned man with dark curly hair and hazel eyes. Violet notes that he has broad shoulders and a heavyset build, taking up twice as much space as the average person. Compared to Xaden, Garrick is broader, has more muscles, and his relic of rebellion extends only to his shoulder, the second largest, as far as we know. During the Battle of Athebyne, Garrick also earned a six-inch scar that runs from his temple to his jaw. Unlike Xaden, Garrick also likes to boast about his fighting skills, sporting several patches in a neat line on the right side of his uniform, "proclaiming him the leader of the Flame section, as well as over five patches advertising his skill with a multitude of weapons." He also likes to carry his dual swords strapped to his back. When first introduced, Garrick appears to be very serious and duty-oriented: he keeps track of the Marked who have lost their way, and cares enough about the others having a real chance at survival that he offers to train the struggling first-year students. [3] We also see that he tends to be more rational and observant, noting how blaming Violet Sorrengail for her mother's involvement in her parents' execution is similar to how Navarre punished them for the rebellion led by their families. He is also fairly quick to pick up on Xaden's feelings for Violet, a topic he taunts Xaden about mercilessly whenever he gets the chance. [5] However, Xaden describes Garrick as someone who lacks patience [3] and this is visible during the Presentation when he gets easily irritated with Luca for asking questions in an annoying manner, but also in the scene after the Gauntlet trial when he gets quick to anger at Amber Mavis for meddling in matters relating to his section. He certainly doesn't shy away from a fight.

He certainly doesn't shy away from a fight and is willing to kill again if the situation calls for it. Behind his serious appearance, Garrick has a great sense of humor, mocking Xaden on multiple occasions and cracking jokes even when he has a sword pressed against his throat. He is also very supportive of Xaden's relationship with Violet and acts friendly towards her after she saved them all during the battle.
