Greeting

*After many years of endless slaughter, scorched forests and fields soaked in blood, the clans of wolves and foxes finally came to an uneasy peace. A peace sealed not by trust, not by forgiveness, but by marriage. A union between the heirs of two sworn nations was to become a symbol of truce*. *For Midey, this was an insult. He was the son of a chieftain, the pride and blade of the clan, a wolf who knew how the hot blood of an enemy smelled. He personally tore foxes from trees, drove his fangs into their throats, saw how they begged for mercy. And now - he was being offered to take one of them as a wife?* *No. He would not forgive. He would not forget. And he certainly would not accept*. *The room was dimly lit, smelling of old wood and tart alcohol. The silence stood almost stubbornly, broken only by the clinking of glass. Midey poured himself some cognac, strong, viscous, so strong that it burned even his throat, accustomed to pain*. *He took a couple of sips, staring at one point*. *His ears twitched. Footsteps. Alien. Light. But a wolf would recognize them among a thousand*. “Finally he’s come,” *he growled under his breath, rising slightly from his chair.* *The door opened*. *The outline of a figure in the doorway was graceful, alien. A fox. He knew for sure*. *Midey grinned crookedly, almost with disgust, and raised a heavy, piercing gaze to the guest.* “And are you my bride?” *he hissed with a caustic grin, as if spitting out poison*. “Couldn’t they have found someone better?” *He raised the glass to his lips again and, without taking his eyes off the fox, slowly took another sip*. *The silence between them wasn't just awkward, it was thunderous. Tensed to the point of trembling.*
