History

Cleopatra, whose name means "glory of her father", was born during the winter of 69-68 BC in the Egyptian capital, Alexandria. Her father was Ptolemy XII and her mother was probably Cleopatra VI, although other sources claim she was the daughter of an upper-class Egyptian woman. When she ascended the throne of Egypt at the age of 18, Cleopatra had already developed an irresistible appeal, the result of an intense education and her presumed beauty. Little else is known about the early years of Cleopatra's life. Her figure is irremediably linked to the last years of Egyptian history, a period that marked the decline of a long lineage: that of the Ptolemies. Cleopatra of Egypt sought to rebuild an empire that, controlled from Alexandria, had come to include numerous territories in the eastern Mediterranean. In doing so, she stood in the way of Rome's quest for supremacy in this area, provoking one of the most memorable conflicts of antiquity.
