Overview & Appearance

The heroine of Demon Slayer. She forms the main quartet (Kamabokotai) along with Kamado Tanjiro, Agatsuma Zenitsu, and Hashibira Inosuke, and plays the role of the only female among them. The younger sister of the main character, Tanjiro Kamado. She lived an ordinary life, but one day, she was attacked by Muzan Kibutsuji and turned into an oni. The story begins when Tanjiro goes on an adventure with Nezuko to turn her back into a human. In fact, she is the beginning of the Demon Slayer story. In human times, Tanjiro, as the eldest son, had to spend more than half a day away from home to earn a living, so the role of looking after his younger siblings was almost entirely taken up by Nezuko. She also went out to sew or pick wild vegetables, and she lived as a devoted daughter who not only looked after her younger siblings, but also readily helped her mother with household chores. Similar to her brother, she has a hairstyle that exposes her forehead, long hair that goes past her waist, droopy eyes with a single upper eyelash as a focal point, and pink eyes. In her past human days, she had black hair that was tied up with three small ribbons and had an elegant and mature appearance.[14] However, after becoming a goblin, she keeps her hair down.[15] Her fingernails have grown long, she has sharp fangs, her eyes have changed, and she looks a bit younger due to childhood regression. Even when she was human, she was a well-reputed beauty in the village, and judging by the many mentions of her beauty in the work, it seems that her natural beauty remains even after becoming a goblin. She is also mentioned as being very popular in Demon Slayer Academy! Unlike Tanjiro, who resembles his father a lot,[16] Nezuko's appearance is a direct copy of her mother's, including the shape of her eyes and eye highlights. In particular, when she was human, she had similar hair tied up, so they were almost identical. The author acknowledges that she is a great beauty, and as mentioned above, her appearance was praised both while alive and after becoming a goblin. In fact, when Yushiro first saw Nezuko, he teased her by calling her an "ugly woman," but Tanjiro didn't even understand who he was calling her an ugly woman. Considering that Tanjiro is the type of person who cares for his family but doesn't say anything nonsense, and that Yushiro later changed his words about this, we can see how much Nezuko's appearance is in the story. Her attire consists of a pink kimono with a hemp leaf pattern and a red and white checkered obi,[17] and she wears a copper-colored haori over her outer garment.[18] After becoming a goblin, she folds the kimono for easier movement. Another notable feature is that he has a bamboo gag in his mouth. At first, Tomioka Giyuu bit Nezuko as a precaution against her possibly going out of control and biting someone, but since Nezuko herself can't speak anyway and doesn't seem particularly uncomfortable, Tanjiro doesn't say anything either, and since he can take it off at will[19], it seems that Nezuko likes it, but he is somewhat aware that he might bite someone without realizing it someday.

In her human days, her father died young, and despite her poor family background, she was the eldest daughter and had to take care of her younger siblings, so she was very kind, mature, and self-controlled. [21] She was quite mature for her age, to the point where she advised Tanjiro, "Happiness is not something you have to be rich to be happy." That's why Tanjiro felt gratitude toward Nezuko, but also a sense of guilt. Unfortunately, after becoming a goblin, she lost a significant portion of her ego, and because she did not eat people, her intelligence fell to the level of an infant, and she cannot speak human language and is held in a bamboo gag, so she can only make sounds like "mmm, mmm". Thanks to Tanjiro, she finally started to feel affection for her family, and later, Urokodaki hinted at her and instilled in her the idea that "humans are all your family. Do not forgive goblins who harm humans", so she is basically[22] friendly and protective of humans, and although she herself became a goblin, she is hostile to goblins who harm humans. At first, Tanjiro was uncomfortable with the fact that she had hypnotized him, thinking that she was ignoring Nezuko's ego, but when he saw that she did not antagonize Tamayo and Yushiro, who are goblins, by classifying them as "humans", he was relieved to see that Nezuko's ego was intact. Certainly, it is the influence of infantile regression, and she often shows childish behavior, such as being absent-minded or acting cute towards her older brother, which is the complete opposite of her original adult appearance. In the Asakusa arc, when Tanjiro was having a serious conversation with Tamayo, she would rudely lie down on the floor or do something else by herself in the corner. In the Mugen Train arc, she tried to wake up her sleeping older brother to pat his head, but when he wouldn't wake up, she headbutted him, and when her head started bleeding, she burst into tears and threw a tantrum. Even if it's a goblin, it's basically impossible for there to be no ego at all, so Tamayo speculated that Nezuko's infantile regression might have been due to something that took priority over the reconstruction of the ego, which was later revealed to be true. Nezuko was changing the nature of her blood on her own through appetite suppression, rapid growth, energy recovery through sleep instead of cannibalism, and freedom from Muzan's interference. In other words, the reason Nezuko regressed into infantile regression was because, in the process of being reborn as a goblin, before her awareness as a goblin was formed, she had acquired a certain degree of ego through her brother, and before even that ego was properly formed, she unconsciously prioritized evolution in a direction that would benefit her brother and herself. Considering that Kokushibo, Akaza, Kyutaro, and Taki can overcome or change their basic weaknesses as goblins according to their own will, it seems that this isn't impossible as long as you have a strong willpower.

Combat Power & Bloodthirsty

He has never tasted a single piece of human flesh or a single drop of blood, yet he is much stronger than most goblins. Tanjiro thinks that the goblin he defeated on his first mission received a lot of blood from Muzan after being defeated by Nezuko. Up until this point, it was just this goblin's guess, but in the latter half, it is revealed that Muzan really did inject him with a lot of blood. The reason he injected so much blood was to create a goblin that could overcome the sun. Normally, if you drink that much blood, your body would collapse before you could even turn into a goblin, but Nezuko was able to endure it and become a powerful goblin thanks to her absurd qualities. However, in the beginning, he was often pushed back due to his lack of experience, but in the latter half of the game, as he gained experience, he was able to compete on par with Sang-Hyeon, and Tanjiro's teacher Urokodaki emphasized that he was not weak enough to warrant protection. Perhaps because he received a lot of Muzan's blood, he has an insane spec of at least Ha-Hyeon-Gil despite never having eaten a human. In the beginning, he had only been a goblin for a short time and was focused on the aforementioned personality change + lack of experience, so he was considered strong among regular goblins, but he soon mastered the blood demon technique and his fighting prowess began to grow. The fighting style is simple[5] body attacks that rely on their unique, immense regenerative powers, especially kicking. Unlike other goblins, they rarely use blood magic because they fall asleep if they use too much blood. Also, when the battle is prolonged and their stamina is low, they are overcome with cannibalistic impulses and try to attack humans, showing their weakness in long-term battles. However, as mentioned above, even considering their various weaknesses, their physical specs are overwhelming, so their fighting power is sufficient. It also has the ability to change its body. Normally, it makes itself small like a child and rests inside a box, but when it fights, it fights in a larger body than usual. Since they have changed to replace cannibalism with sleep during the evolution process, they can survive without cannibalism at all. Goblins must eat people to survive before they become stronger, and even Tamayo and Yushiro, who modified their own bodies, need to consume blood, so they store blood separately. However, Nezuko suppresses her cannibalistic impulses solely through sleep, and instead accumulates strength and becomes stronger. Considering that most of the tragedies that occur in this work are caused by cannibalistic impulses as a goblin, this is highly unusual. Burst: Creates a fire that burns only the goblin through blood. It burns not only the goblin's body, but also all blood magic that works through its blood or flesh, and reduces its regenerative power. If the goblin's poison works through blood magic, it can be burned to nullify it. Of course, it only heals by burning a part of the goblin, so when it healed Uzui Tengen, it detoxified the goblin's poison, but it did not heal the wounds it received in battle. In contrast, it is harmless to humans or other objects, and does not burn surrounding items such as clothing at all.

Human relationships

Kamado Tanjiro: He is a precious older brother to Tanjiro who loves and devotes himself to his family just as much as he does to Tanjiro, and he is also his only remaining blood relative. He is truly more precious than his own life, to the point that even after Muzan's betrayal and starvation, he uses what little reason he has left to protect his older brother. Tanjiro also treasures Nezuko more than his own life, and their relationship is stronger than anyone else's, to the point that they always hang out together. After their father passed away, Tanjiro felt sorry for not being able to feed his poor family properly, and it was Nezuko who reminded him that just as his older brother wanted to make us happy, we also want to make him happy. Nezuko is the pillar that keeps Tanjiro mentally strong. Tomioka Giyuu: The Kamado siblings' benefactor and the first one, other than Tanjiro, to find out that Nezuko had become an oni. However, he pretends not to see Nezuko and thinks of her as special because he had high hopes for her nature to protect people. Also, when Nezuko was discovered by Kochou Shinobu and targeted, he broke the law and helped the Kamado siblings get away. During the Jujutsu Trial, he defended the Kamado siblings' position by putting his own life on the line with Urokodaki. Despite the trauma of having his sister and friend killed by an oni, he still takes care of them, so it seems like he's completely on their side. Incidentally, the bamboo gag that Nezuko is biting was also left by Giyuu to prevent her from biting people. Urokodaki Sakonji: Another benefactor of the Kamado siblings. While Tanjiro was training for the final selection, he took care of Nezuko who was asleep, and hinted at the motivation for his actions when he was still lacking in self-esteem: "Protect humans and do not forgive the Onis who harm humans." Tamayo & Yushiro: They recognize Tamayo as their mother and Yushiro as the youngest Rokuta, so they are friendly, approaching her first and hugging her or patting her on the head. Tamayo is also grateful to the Kamado siblings for considering them as "people", even though they are goblins. Tamayo was amazed by Nezuko's incredible growth ability and is helping her turn back into a human. Yushiro, who doesn't care about anyone else but Tamayo, initially dismissed her as an ugly woman, but after the fight with Yahaba and Susamaru, he acknowledged her as pretty. Agatsuma Zenitsu: She is loved by Zenitsu because she is a beauty that fits his taste perfectly. Zenitsu usually talks to Nezuko about this and that or takes her to pretty places[24][25], and in the Infinite Train arc, she helps Nezuko when she is asleep while she is struggling alone, nurses Zenitsu when he is injured by putting his lap pillow on her, and protects him when the sun rises, so there are many small points of contact. As revealed in Volume 2 of the fanbook, Nezuko vaguely remembers Zenitsu covering her up after Inosuke went after the wooden box she was in after, and she had always felt a pang for Zenitsu. However, Nezuko had become a goblin and her ego was weak, and since Zenitsu was usually so clumsy, she was not sure that Zenitsu was the one who protected the box, and she usually thought of Zenitsu as a strange dandelion. Butterfly Mansion Family: After going through many twists and turns, I became very close with the children of Butterfly Mansion. Kanroji Mitsuri: She is the person that Nezuko opens her heart to the most besides Tanjiro. She is one of the few masters who has never shown hostility towards Nezuko, such as when she said that they should wait for the elders instead of disposing of Nezuko arbitrarily during the Jujutsu Trial and agreed with Kagaya's opinion of leniency. She also had a younger sibling, so she adored Nezuko and they were close enough to see each other as sisters. She was also very sorry when Mitsuri had to part ways due to work.

Kyoujuro Rengoku: As expected from his cool-headed yet strict personality, he was initially the first among the others to insist on the immediate execution of Nezuko, and even when Kagaya said that he would tolerate it, he opposed it and pushed the orthodox opinion that demons must be killed. However, when Kagaya asked, "Conversely, can you prove that Nezuko ate people?", he was unable to refute it, and after seeing that he did not attack even when provoked by Sanemi, he accepted it. Therefore, in the Mugen Train arc, he showed no hostility, saying that he would no longer object to the elders' decision. After that, he acknowledged Nezuko, who fought to protect people against demons in the Mugen Train, as a member of the Demon Slayer Corps. Uzui Tengen: Like Kyojuro, he was a hardliner during the trial, but once the verdict was out, he accepted it without complaint. Shinazawa Sanemi: A main character who could not tolerate Nezuko's existence even under the orders of the chief Kagaya. In particular, Sanemi provoked Nezuko by stabbing a box with a knife to test her and spilling rare blood to prove that Nezuko can eat people. Even when he willingly endured this and Nezuko's existence was tolerated, Sanemi's expression was not very good. Iguro Obanai: Like Sanemi, he couldn't tolerate Nezuko's existence. So he took Sanemi's side, although he didn't do any overt harm. After the verdict was given to spare Nezuko and leave her alive, he didn't really show what he thought. Kibutsuji Muzan: A mortal enemy who killed his entire family except for his older brother Tanjiro and turned himself into a goblin.
