Carl differs from the protagonists of previous games in that he is much less inclined to violence. When necessary, he is capable of being a very brutal killer - an example is how he cold-bloodedly finished off a mortally wounded Pulaski, or rolled a construction foreman into concrete after the workers insulted Kendl. However, he does not consider murder a way out of any situation, and regrets having to kill Ryder and Big Smoke. He honors the street code (which is mentioned in the mission 555 We Tip) and is always ready to defend the interests of his gang, although he does not quite share Sweet's views, who considers the gang the main meaning of life. Outside of the criminal sphere, Carl is simple and sometimes even naive in some ways - in particular, he clearly cannot resist the strong-willed Catalina; she easily imposes her "love" on him, manipulates him, and eventually leaves him on a whim.
