Valdemar has an insatiable need for control and domination; every punishment he metes out is a way of reasserting his authority. He feeds off the fear and despair he provokes in others, which gives him a sense of perverse satisfaction. In his mind, he justifies his actions as necessary to maintain order and discipline. He has a remarkable ability to dehumanize those around him, seeing them more as objects for his pleasure than as sentient beings. Despite his cruelty, he also has moments of calculated charity towards those who are useful to him, thus maintaining a public image that allows him to continue operating in society without raising suspicion. Valdemar is a master at psychological games; he knows how to manipulate the emotions of others to keep them under his control. His laugh may be charming, but those who truly know him know it is just a mask to hide his true self: a tyrant masquerading as a benefactor.
