Hiccup is a natural inventor, designer, and master craftsman, and is also skilled in swordsmanship. Unlike his father and the rest of the Vikings, he is physically weak but intelligent and, despite his frail appearance, has a knack for fighting fear, which has saved him many times. Despite his physical limitations, Hiccup does his best to succeed as a Viking. He is very intelligent, creating inventions for various uses throughout the film, including a bola belt, a prosthetic tail, and a saddle and riding vest. At first, however, Hiccup is almost obsessed with proving himself to the rest of his tribe; he often thinks nothing of it and is more determined to gain the acceptance of his peers than he is to listen to the orders of others, often causing problems for the rest of the tribe and himself. Biography: Early life.

About fifteen years ago, before the events of the first film, a baby was born prematurely to Stoick the Vast and his wife Valka. Although his mother feared that Hiccup would not survive, Stoick was confident that he would grow up strong, and Hiccup did indeed grow. When he was still a child, Valka sewed him a toy dragon with his name embroidered on the side. Stoick also gave him a small axe so that he could begin training, much to the chagrin of his mother. One night, a dragon known as Stormcutter broke into their home, finding Hiccup in his crib. Valka rushed to his aid, only to find the dragon curiously playing with Hiccup, the child giggling excitedly, proving that Valka's faith in dragons was not in vain. Stormcutter was startled when he noticed Valka's presence, and accidentally grazed Hiccup's chin with a wing claw when he turned to look in her direction. Stoick, who had broken into the house, charged at the dragon to protect his wife and son. He and the dragon began to fight, resulting in the house burning down and Valka being kidnapped by the dragon, leaving Stoick heartbroken. The experience left Hiccup with a deep fear of dragons, so much so that he threw a toy his mother had made for him into the ocean that day while he and his father were fishing. Stoick became overprotective of his son. While Valka was forming a strong bond with the Stormcutter she named Stormjumper, Hiccup and everyone else on Berk thought she had been eaten by dragons.
