Jacaerys Velaryon~

History

Born in late 114 AC, Prince Jacaerys was the first son of Ser Laenor Velaryon and Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, daughter of King Viserys I and Princess of Dragonstone. Ser Laenor wished to name the boy Joffrey, in memory of his late friend Ser Joffrey Lonmouth, but his father, Lord Corlys Velaryon, forbade it; instead, the boy was given a traditional House Velaryon name. His uncle, Prince Daeron Targaryen, son of King Viserys I and Queen Alicent Hightower, was born shortly after Jacaerys. Seeking to avoid any enmity, such as that which already existed between Rhaenyra and Alicent, Viserys ordered that Jacaerys and Daeron share a wet nurse until they were weaned, hoping that being foster siblings would create closeness between the children. Unfortunately, the king's hopes for peace between his children and grandchildren were futile. Alicent's three sons, Aegon, Aemond, and Daeron, became bitter rivals of Rhaenyra's three sons, resenting what they felt was the theft of their birthright, the Iron Throne. The forced closeness between the six children, attending feasts, sometimes training together in arms or studying under the same maesters, only increased this dislike. He had two younger brothers, Lucerys born in 115 AC, and Joffrey, in 117 AC. Like his brothers, Jacaerys had brown hair and eyes, in contrast to his parents' Valyrian appearance.[4] According to popular rumor, neither Jacaerys nor his brothers were legitimate children of Ser Laenor, but had been fathered by Queen Rhaenyra's supposed lover, Ser Harwin Strong. However, by royal decree, each of Rhaenyra's children was given a dragon's egg while in the cradle. Those who doubted the children's paternity whispered that the eggs would never hatch, but the birth of three dragons proved otherwise. Jacaerys's offspring was named Vermax. According to Septon Eustace, the dragon's offspring were born in the cradle of the dragons.

King Viserys sat his eldest grandson on his knee while on the Iron Throne holding an audience, and was heard saying: "Someday this will be your seat, boy." In 118 AC, with the blessing of King Viserys I Targaryen, his mother announced Jacaerys's betrothal to his cousin Baela Targaryen, daughter of Prince Daemon Targaryen and Lady Laena Velaryon.

In 120 AC, when Jacaerys was six, his father died. King Viserys I, Queen Alicent, and their children visited Hightide in Driftmark for the funeral. Ten-year-old Prince Aemond had been told that the party would then go to Dragonstone, so that he could claim either a dragon or a dragon egg; the prince, however, was determined to claim Vhagar, the eldest and largest of the dragons, who had recently become riderless following the death of Lady Laena Velaryon earlier that year. Vhagar was present at Driftmark and Aemond, who knew that his parents would not allow him to approach the dragon, secretly attempted to do so. However, he was caught by Jacaerys' three-year-old brother, Joffrey. In an attempt to keep the boy quiet, he slapped him and threatened him, before pushing him into a pile of dragon dung. Aemond climbed onto Vhagar's back and flew two circles before landing. When he landed, he found Rhaenyra's three sons waiting for him, for Joffrey had called for his two elder brothers, Jacaerys and Lucerys, aged five. The four boys fought with fists and wooden training swords, until Aemond taunted his nephews by calling them "Strong". Jacaerys, old enough to understand the insult, attacked Aemond again. When Aemond gained the upper hand and began savagely beating Jacaerys, Lucerys drew her dagger and slashed Aemond's face, gouging out his right eye.[7] Following the incident, Queen Alicent demanded that Lucerys lose an eye as penance, while Queen Rhaenyra demanded that Aemond be interrogated until he revealed where he had heard that his children were "Strong", suggesting that they were Harwin Strong's bastards and thus implying that Rhaenyra was guilty of high treason. Aemond eventually admitted to having heard his brother Aegon's slander, who only retorted "everyone knows that. Just look at them".

Viserys finally ended the interrogation, declaring that he would listen no more. He decided that if anyone mocked his grandchildren again, their tongues would be torn out with hot pincers. Furthermore, Rhaenyra and her children would remain on Dragonstone, while Alicent and her children returned to King's Landing. That same year, her mother remarried, this time to her uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen. Her half-brother Aegon was born later in the year, followed by Viserys in 122 AC. Unlike Jacaerys and his brothers, Rhaenyra's younger sons had the Valyrian appearance of the Targaryens. In 126 AC, her grandfather, Lord Corlys Velaryon, fell ill. The question of who would succeed him as Lord of the Tides was debated, as his children Laenor and Laena were dead, and Laenor's eldest son Jacaerys was destined to succeed his other grandfather and mother on the Iron Throne. Rhaenyra urged Corlys to name his second son, Lucerys, as his heir; but Corlys' eldest nephew Ser Vaemond Velaryon protested on the grounds that Rhaenyra's eldest sons were not Laenor's, but the bastards of Ser Harwin Strong. Rhaenyra had her husband cut off Vaemond's head, and fed the body to her dragon. Vaemond's younger brothers fled to King's Landing with Vaemond's wife and children, to seek justice from the king. King Viserys I listened to them, but then ordered their tongues torn out, telling them that they had been warned. As he descended from the Iron Throne, the king cut his hand to the bone with the edge of a throne sword. Viserys' hand became infected and it was feared that he would die. However, he recovered and on the first day a feast was given to celebrate his return to good health. Queen Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent were ordered to attend, with all their children, and they put on a show of friendship and love. However, after the king had left the feast.

Prince Aemond toasted his three Velaryon nephews, speaking in mock admiration of their brown hair, brown eyes, and strength, calling them "three strong lads." Later that evening, Prince Aegon took offense when Jacaerys asked his sister-wife, Princess Helaena, for a dance. Angry words were exchanged, and the two princes might have been killed had it not been for the intervention of the Kingsguard.

Jacaerys is described as having brown hair and eyes, and a snub nose. He is described as a well-built and handsome young man, as well as responsible, bold, and politically savvy. He was considered very protective of his family, and became an expert in weapons while serving as a squire.
