Story Plot

Dandadan stands out for its original and fresh story, which fuses science fiction, spirits, and aliens in a unique way. The plot follows Momo Ayase and Ken Takakura, two teenagers who, after a bet, are drawn into a supernatural world full of mysterious creatures and unexplainable phenomena.

Ken Takakura (高たか 倉くら 健けん, Takakura Ken?), also known as Okarun (オカルン, Okarun?), is the main male protagonist of the manga series. Dandadan. He is a fanatic of the occult, primarily a believer in aliens and UFOs, who lived an introverted school life until he met Momo Ayase from school. After a bet with her leads them to form a friendship as his kintama disappears Having been cursed by the Turbo Granny, Okarun sets out to find what he's lost, with the help of Momo and other allies, and overcome any paranormal obstacles in his path.

Appearance Okarun is a young man of average height and slim build, with brown hair, brown eyes, and round-framed glasses. Okarun's hair was originally cut in a bowl cut, but has since become unruly following his confrontation with the Flatwoods Monster, and is thus considered to be of average appearance. While she is one of the few characters that can be seen in a variety of outfits, her most common outfit is her school uniform, which is a typical gakuran outfit.

Personality Okarun describes himself as a socially awkward individual who has an inordinate interest in the paranormal, with his main interest being the existence of aliens and cryptids. This interest dates back to his childhood, when he attempted to contact aliens in a desperate attempt to make friends, having grown up without a single one in his life due to constant bullying. As a result, Okarun developed an inferiority complex where he believes that he is unable to fit in with others or that people are better off not associating with him. Even after befriending Momo, Okarun still seems to retain some low self-esteem. After Jiji came back into Momo's life, Okarun thought to himself that he couldn't compete with him when it came to being his friend based on his observation of how entertaining Momo was around him and had almost come close to ending his friendship with her so as not to be a nuisance. According to Momo, Okarun's real problem with making friends was that he was quick to make judgmental assumptions about others, which caused him to subconsciously keep others at a distance.

Okarun is an altruistic person who believes that it is right to help others when they are in trouble. A notable example is when he offered Mr. Mantis Shrimp his kintama to sell in order to gain funds for his son's blood transfusion. As a friend, he is fiercely loyal and protective, as he will not let others get away with harming those he has formed a bond with, such as when he furiously attacked the Evil Eye for harming Momo and taking over Jiji's body. Before learning that spirits really do walk among the living, Okarun was skeptical of their existence, as he believed there were logical explanations for why people would jump to the conclusion of this paranormal activity. Okarun is also formal to a fault, as he never dares to address his friends or allies by their names or nicknames without adding a polite suffix. The only exception to this is Jiji, as the latter will ignore him if he does so. It is because of this characteristic that Momo was able to tell that Reiko Kashima was impersonating Okarun, due to her referring to Jiji as "Jiji-san". The only time she pays no heed to formality is when she changes into her Turbo Granny form.

Initially, Okarun was only able to enter this mode while still being cursed by Turbo Granny and with help from Momo's psychokinesis powers to suppress the curse from his head, thereby allowing him to control his body. After the yokai's powers were accidentally left inside him, Okarun became able to enter the transformation willingly. When accessing this power, Okarun's hair flared up and turned white, gained two thick vertical stripes across his eyes, and had a noticeable dark jaw mask with a row of multiple teeth. Underneath his clothing, Okarun's body was given a more muscular definition, while forcing his posture to become hunch-like, and the nails on his hands and toes became sharpened and black. The clothes he chose to wear were also slightly altered to become flame-like. Okarun's mental state also changed in addition to his physical, giving him a depressing personality and a strange tendency to say "yo" at the end of his sentences. Okarun in his Turbo Granny form.

Momo Ayase (綾あや 瀬せ 桃もも, Ayase Momo?) is the main female protagonist of the manga series Dandadan. After forming a friendship with an occult fanatic at school named Ken Takakura, whom she nicknames "Okarun", leading to her awakening his psychic powers as the latter loses his kintama upon being cursed by Turbo Granny, Momo complies to help him find what he's lost and overcome any paranormal obstacles along the way.

appearance Momo is a teenage girl of average height, with medium-length brown hair that mostly frames the right side of her face and brown eyes. She is considered quite attractive by Okarun and some other male characters. While she can be seen wearing a variety of outfits throughout the series, her most common outfit is her school uniform: a white t-shirt underneath a long-sleeved sweater with a loose bow, a navy skirt, slouchy socks, and sandals. Her overall outfit matches the kogal style that the Gals wear. It also includes circular earrings and a black choker around her neck that has a circular element on the back, which is an accessory that she sticks to wearing at all times when she chooses to wear different outfits.

personality Momo is shown to be a bold, confident, and fierce young woman, as there have rarely been instances of her being intimidated by others. She has a no-nonsense attitude and often loses her temper when angered, mainly when she is belittled or has to deal with the antics of her friends and allies. She is prone to comically violently lashing out at the person responsible for invoking her wrath, however, if she realizes that her outbursts have gone too far, she will show remorse. Additionally, she is also susceptible to throwing insults, as shown by her occasional fight with Aira. At the same time, Momo is kind, friendly, and cheerful. Her genuine compassion and empathy for others makes her the type of person who can't ignore the misdeeds being committed or turn her back on others who are in an unfortunate situation, with Okarun being a great example. Although she didn't know him at the time, Momo decided to step in and protect Okarun from some bullies who were bullying him and was willing to help him break free from the Turbo Granny curse in light of him not wanting to drag her into his mess. She also saw no reason not to form a friendship with him after the sudden events of their bet. When it comes to family and friends, Momo's fury can be directed towards anyone who offends them, especially if it causes them harm. Hearing how Aira intentionally messed with Okarun's feelings when they first met, Momo retaliated by using her powers to drop a basin on his head, as well as making a snide comment.
