Morgana's appearance
In the Metaverse, Morgana is an anthropomorphic, bipedal creature resembling a tuxedo cat with a large spheroidal head. His fur is predominantly black, except for his limbs and tail which appear white. The lower front half of his face or his mouth is also white. Despite this, Morgana is referred to as a "black cat". The only exceptions are in later depictions of the series, such as in Royal, where Kunikazu Okumura's Shadow refers to him as a "black and white" thing. His design and proportions resemble a mascot character, as his entire body is the same height as his head.[6] Morgana has a bulbous, pear-shaped body, but the anatomy varies depending on interpretation, as it can be depicted as flat and rectangular. He also has short legs. Due to Morgana's small stature, the curvature of the muscles in his limbs is more extreme, the only difference being that he has smaller hands and feet in comparison. In some prevalent material, such as his portraits in Persona 5, the anatomy of his arm muscles is flat and generalized. Morgana wears a mask (which can be unbuttoned from behind) that covers much of his face except for his ears and elliptical eyes consisting of white sclerae, blue irises, and black pupils. His eyes are slightly slanted at a downward angle.[7] Additionally, his eyes are arranged vertically in the center of his head, but can also be positioned higher up. His outer ears are black with white inner ears. He has a lemon-colored scarf around his neck, which in Strikers is confirmed to be made of mysterious materials.[8][9][10] He also sports a utility belt around his hips, with two gold buttons and two pouches attached. He usually has tufts of fur inside his ears, around his shoulders, and on his chest. He has pink paw pads.
Morgana 2 appearance
In the real world, Morgana retains the anatomy of a normal adult house cat. The fur on her body remains the same, although it has been described as "smooth and silky" to the touch.[11] Her head is no longer covered by a mask and is predominantly black, with the exception of her white muzzle. She has a black nose and whiskers on the sides of her muzzle and above her eyes. Her blue irises cover her entire eyes, hiding her sclera, and her eyes are instead strongly upturned. She wears a yellow collar in place of a scarf and no longer wears a belt. Her cat form also has retractable claws. In the Metaverse, Morgana can transform into a van, but in-game she is always referred to as a "car". Her design is based on the Citroën H Van. The paint job is predominantly black, with three yellow stripes on the hood (the middle one being the thickest), and although they are symmetrical to each other, they are aligned asymmetrically with the vehicle itself, as they converge towards the left windshield. On the grille, there is a small gold emblem representing Morgana's bipedal head. Additionally, the headlights represent her eyes, her ears are attached to the front of the roof, and her tail is attached to the rear. Unlike normal vehicles, it can also fold in a cartoon-like manner. Inside, the bus has 2 rows of seats in the front, with 2 more in the front that are aligned on the sides of the car, facing each other.
Morgana 3 appearance
For most of Persona 5, Morgana's anthropomorphic appearance is the one displayed in his dialogue portrait, no matter what form he is actually in or whether they are in the real world or not. However, after the Metaverse was erased along with his Metaverse form, he is perceived as a normal house cat. However, should a new Mementos-related incident occur and become known to him, his portrait will change from his cat form to his anthropomorphic form, only to revert once the source of the incident is removed. In Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, Morgana appears in his anthropomorphic form. For his prom stage attire, he retains his mask, but no longer wears a utility belt. Instead, he wears a white T-shirt with a gold "M" logo, with small letters "BAD★CAT" engraved below it. He obtains a large red scarf and black sneakers with gold laces and white soles. He also wears a large golden crown on his head, with large letters "KING" carved around it, repeating the same word twice. Red diamond-shaped gems are engraved between these letters, with the exception of those between "G" and "K", which are shaped like stars, serving as spacing between words. Additionally, he also wears a golden chain bracelet on his left wrist. In Persona 5 Royal , Morgana temporarily attains the form of a human. He has straight dark blue hair with side bangs and blue eyes. He wears a gray jacket over a dark beige crew-neck shirt, along with a thin yellow necklace. Additionally, he wears white jeans with a black belt and black sneakers with white laces, soles, and toes. He is approximately the protagonist's height.
Personality
Morgana has an arrogant and conceited personality, much to the annoyance of most of the other members of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. He is especially blunt and can make fun of others, especially Ryuji and the protagonist. He can be quite demeaning towards the two, making fun of them and treating them both like children at times. Especially in combat, Morgana shows off and acts more masculine than he naturally is. He can also be very bossy, especially towards the protagonist, often telling him off, such as when he makes him clean his desk to teach him how to make infiltration tools. Morgana is generally selfish and self-righteous, which makes him intentionally unlikable and annoying. At first, he had no qualms about using the protagonist and Ryuji and the idea of inflicting a mental shutdown on Suguru Kamoshida, a criminal they targeted. His prideful nature prevents him from admitting that he is relying on others, at one point making an excuse that "he needed pawns" and was using the protagonist, Ryuji, and Ann, when in truth he actually needed their help to restore his memories. The culmination of both traits becomes apparent during the Okumura arc, where Morgana starts an argument with Ryuji, only for his stance to be a projection of his insecurities that he pushes far enough that he recklessly runs away, worrying the others, when in truth this entire ordeal is simply the result of Morgana being unable to express her true feelings and dependence on others. Although Morgana does become a better person, it is only the bare minimum, as Morgana's arrogance and selfishness still remain. Usually Morgana is called out by Ryuji for her hypocrisy, and sometimes even by Ann calmly, who otherwise defends Morgana.
Personality 2
Regarding his appearance, Morgana goes through a severe identity crisis and is in deep denial about being a cat, insisting that he is human. While he demonstrates several human qualities, such as his ability to speak or exercise various skills such as lockpicking, which is at first the basis of Morgana's argument as to why he should be human, he still meows and self-grooms. The matter is complicated by his circumstances as an amnesiac, as there is initially room for speculation that he could become human, though he later remembers that it is an assumption he forgot he made. Despite this, there is no substantial reason for him to think or want to become human explored in the game, nor is there a significant difference between the two, as he is not mistreated by the group for being a cat, resulting in an obsession. Regardless of these circumstances, Morgana tends to overreact and potentially lash out at others when called a cat, even if it is a misunderstanding such as in Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, where Ryūji mentions a "catwalk", which Morgana interprets as him mocking how he walks. Morgana sometimes pretends to be a cat when it is convenient, as called out by Ryūji. This empty obsession remains and leads to several outbursts and problems for the group (such as Morgana's escape), because what Morgana truly fears is having no reason to exist due to her amnesiac state and having no memories of why she was born. Morgana overcomes this fear with the help of her friends in two ways: by determining to seek the truth about her past, which reveals a hidden purpose as a servant of the Velvet Room, and by creating her own purpose in life through a loyal disposition towards the Phantom Thieves' activities.
Personality 3
In Persona 5 Strikers, his efforts to move on, as well as the original essence of his denial, are more apparent, as he is conflicted between embracing and denying his identity completely. Even so, Morgana gradually overcomes this and comes to his senses by working together with the Phantom Thieves, a cause that gives him purpose. Otherwise, even as early as Persona 5, there are instances where he is perfectly comfortable in his feline skin, such as in the request "Calling for Justice for Cats", where he gradually but temporarily discards his insecurities to avenge hurt and abused cats. Despite his loud mouth, Morgana is a gentleman at heart, and has a polite and eloquent manner of speaking, and is very gentlemanly towards women. While he can be petty, he generally cares for the protagonist, and sincerely sympathizes with his plight arising from a false accusation; to a rare extent, this includes Ryuji as well. He has also been shown to consider the ideal person to be a hero figure who helps people in need, which leads him to act gallantly at times. Morgana keeps things fair, conveyed by his give-and-take agreements between others, and never goes back on his word either, as he promised to guide the protagonist and Ryuji out of Kamoshida's Palace when they first met, on the condition that they free him from his cell.
Personality 4
He is a flawed gentleman, however, as he can be reluctantly cowardly, such as when the rest of the group agrees to go on rollercoaster rides, as Morgana does not wish to vomit, in contrast to Ryūji and Ann's playful determination. He is also clumsy, as during their infiltration of Madarame's Palace, Morgana activates a trap while mindlessly interested in a treasure that turns out to contain a Treasure Demon. Although defended by Ann, Ryūji calls out Morgana, as he has been the one who has been warning the group to be careful a little earlier. Additionally, Morgana is socially awkward, and at one point Futaba Sakura herself remarks that Morgana "has no tact". Morgana is very intelligent and has a lot of common knowledge. Morgana also knows English (in addition to her native Japanese), but he has become rusty (in the English localization, which was changed to German). [12] He is also adaptable in blind situations, such as when dealing with investigations in the Metaverse and even helping the protagonist with difficult questions in class. Morgana's understanding of the Metaverse gives her deep psychological knowledge, which is essential for the group to understand the nuances of dealing with people's hearts. Because of this, Morgana likes to label herself as a "smart guy". [13] Morgana is also very skilled, especially when teaching, creating, and providing tools for the group's mission, referring to himself as their "tool expert".
Personality 5
Morgana is very blunt and direct, and often speaks his mind, most commonly criticizing Ryuji for his laziness, and to some extent the protagonist. He can be irritable, and will warn or scold his teammates when they are not careful. Regardless, he does not rub salt in the wound when things get bad, and earnestly encourages the team to break out of whatever rut they are in. He also has a fatherly side, looking after others with genuine concern: this treatment includes Futaba Sakura while she was learning to open up and overcome her anxiety and distrust, making him endure her playful animal abuse and any trouble that came her way. And while some of her teammates may be hard-pressed to question her morals in terms of whether what they are doing is right, Morgana shows autonomous faith in her own ideals. Morgana completely ignores criticism from the public and even Goro Akechi, who condemn the Phantom Thieves' actions in order to encourage her allies.
Personality 6
Morgana is loyal to the Phantom Thieves, treating them as equals during missions and meetings due to the nature of the agreement, with both sides requiring each other to work together to succeed. He refers to a number of contributions or mistakes the team makes as a collective effort. Although he initially had a distant give-and-take relationship with the Thieves and was planning to leave the group and move on after restoring his memory, his fruitless journey led to the Phantom Thieves growing fond of him and gradually coming to love being with them. He has shown gratitude for their hospitality, especially since he has nowhere else to belong. This has helped develop a sense of duty towards their goals, increasing his loyalty to a state of selflessness, to the point where he is willing to sacrifice himself to protect his friends. Additionally, after a while, he is no longer afraid of being mean and unfair once he accepts the fact that he is a cat, and does not hold back in dishing out insults, especially one-sided ones, speaking in a much more smug tone than before. However, this is all in good fun, as Morgana has become a master of rhetoric due to her newfound tact in social situations, both in terms of communication and interpretation of context.
Personality 7
Morgana has a stable but special relationship with the protagonist. At first, Morgana, while appreciating the value of her friendship and bond with the protagonist, acted for her own benefit and saw him as a coveted tool and an opportunity that she would use for her success. Supposedly, the protagonist was just a stepping stone that Morgana thought she would leave behind for her larger schemes. But once Morgana was forced to confront the fact that her dreams might not be the way he was, Morgana would gradually open up to the protagonist and in her concerns, the protagonist would always be the first person she turned to. [q 4] In the end, Morgana realizes that she has been treating the protagonist as a tool and also the fact that the two belong together, with the protagonist complementing Morgana as a person, if not vice versa: and both would become devoted enough to risk their lives for each other.
Personality 8
Aside from her selfish views on their relationship, Morgana has a soft side that comes to light over time: not only would they both actively care for each other, Morgana would sympathize with the protagonist's plight of being falsely accused. [q 6] [q 7] [q 8] [q 9] Throughout the story, Morgana would see potential within the protagonist, which would only seem like a coincidence, but she would soon realize that he is special as if fate was on her side. [q 10] [q 11] [q 12] [q 8] Morgana's support is reciprocated by the protagonist, who is not only grateful to Morgana as a friend, but also understands his insecurities and shows solidarity with him facing his fear of failure. [q 13] [q 14] According to Ryuji, Morgana would never give up on the protagonist. [q 15] Yusuke even emphasizes how close they are by describing that if Morgana were to become human, he might "end up like the protagonist". [q 16] Morgana has been open with her thoughts on the attic: although she finds it messy, "drab", or generally abysmal, Morgana comes to appreciate the attic as it is where she wants to stay, at one point even calling it a "comfortable little room". Although Morgana's bond with the protagonist is usually buried under many different interests, be it his equally divided loyalty to the team, his crush on Ann, his materialistic desires, goals, and even his own arrogant routine, causing him to ramble and never speak directly to the protagonist. Regardless, Morgana has an underlying affection for the protagonist, as even then he is almost always with him, sometimes willingly. Although he expresses his feelings through his bluntness, there are few and rare instances where he is open with the protagonist himself, genuinely speaking to him face to face.
Personality 9
Although he has an idea of how to be dignified and rational, deep down Morgana is more optimistic, especially while spending time with the protagonist during his daily life: although he acts as the protagonist's voice of reason, Morgana is also very encouraging of him, as he can not only praise him, but cheer him up if things go wrong. Despite his limitations, Morgana is great at taking care of him. He also seems to enjoy watching the protagonist have fun while doing various activities. Morgana is also emotionally attuned to books and films and empathizes with their characters, such as the film The Cake Knight Rises; in Buchiko's Story, Morgana openly states that she cries every time she reads the book. [q 19] [q 20] [q 21] Additionally, Morgana is also quite meek and cowardly, as he is not good with scary stories, and it is implied that he cannot handle gore while watching Pach Saw. Additionally, he is modest about his own overall worth, thinking little of himself in relation to others, which makes him naturally empathetic. This can expand to fiction as well, making it easier for him to become absorbed in films and books and sympathize with their characters. While at first he keeps his true feelings to himself, over time he begins to open up to the protagonist, freely rambling about his inner thoughts and dreams. Morgana dislikes condescending people.
Personality 10
He is also a heavy dreamer: he often immerses himself in the shoes of his ideal self, as he is shown fantasizing about what would happen if he became human, to the point of imagining his supposed true form having the appearance of a handsome man while living a luxurious life. More often than not, Morgana wanders off into his thoughts, usually daydreaming or wondering about what he is: if Morgana is taken to the confessional, he will comment on it, having realized how much he held his tongue, and would be relieved by the experience. Not only that, but despite his reluctance to live like a normal house cat or be treated like one, he actually seems to enjoy the perks that come with them, or learns to like them. He would normally not be allowed to eat human food, so he would have to eat canned cat food during his daily life.[19] He would complain about it at first, but eventually he would grow to love it.[5] Morgana seems to enjoy being petted as well. Although the protagonist and others do not normally touch him, Morgana acknowledges that his feline qualities can help the protagonist, and he once reluctantly allowed him to touch his paw instead of going to an adult store to relieve stress.[q29] Additionally, according to Morgana, lounging in the sun is the most peaceful time for him.
Personality 11
Morgana is very interested in the phantom thief genre, and frequently integrates it into his infiltration activities. This enthusiasm is one of the reasons he coined the group's basic theme to revolve around phantom thieves. Morgana also believes that a phantom thief should have an eye for art, as well as discerning authentic pieces from fakes. According to the Persona 5 art book, Morgana's hobbies include watching TV, particularly the news and police dramas; this interest is showcased when they watch TV in Leblanc, as Morgana will comment on the news and the recurring police drama starring sharp-witted detective Sakyo Hinoshita.[5][20] He will not comment on other programs, such as the broadcast special "Discovery! Town Detectives!" and the recurring series "Phoenix Rangers"; the only other instances where he will comment is if it is an activity relevant to the protagonist, such as the Home Shopping Program or the TV Quiz Show. Morgana also seems to be very fond of the idea of being a commander, as according to him, upon reading "Call Me Boss", Morgana loves the sound of "boss" and would like to be called that someday.[q31] Morgana wishes he had a cooler codename than "Mona". Morgana also enjoys cooking, referring to himself as a "serious gourmet".[21] He loves fish cooking, especially raw fish[19] and sushi: he is enthusiastic enough to be knowledgeable about many types of sushi. When Morgana first wanted to become human, he considered trying Sojiro's curry afterwards.
