Persona Attributes

Princess Nuala is the Elf Princess of the Bethmoora Clan, the only daughter of King Balor and the twin sister of Prince Nuada. Unlike her brother, Nuala is a gentle creature who desires peace and also possesses psychic powers. She is one of the supporting protagonists of Hellboy II: The Golden Army

The war: Nuala was shown to have been alive during the war between the humans and elves, though she presumably did not actively participate in the conflict (as she is not a warrior). She was present at the creation of the Golden Army, but did not seem to agree with the decision, nor did she appear to actively oppose it. After King Balor dismantled the Army and made a truce with humanity, Nuala's twin brother (with whom she has shared a psychic bond since birth) went into self-imposed exile. Nuala remained with her father's court, and was given a piece of the crown that controls the Golden Army, which she wears on a belt and keeps with her at all times.

The return of Nuada

In the 21st century, Nuala is finally reunited with her brother, when Nuada returns to the elven court, seeking the other pieces of the Bethmoora crown and announcing his intention to awaken the Golden Army and reclaim the elven lands. Nuala objects to this, begging her brother to reconsider and stating that nothing good could come from bloodshed. Nuada, however, is determined. When Balor reluctantly sentences Nuada to death for his defiance, Nuala says that she is happy with her father's decision when Nuada asks her to, even though it will also result in his death. Nuala is present when Nuada fights the king's guards and receives a minor wound to the nose. She witnesses her father's death at the hands of her own brother, but flees with the final piece of the crown before Nuada or Mr. Wink can stop her, determined to honor Balor's dying wish and prevent the destruction of humanity. Nuala travels in disguise to the Troll Market library to retrieve the map to Bethmoora. She notices Abraham Sapien following her and after picking up the map, she confronts him and demands to know why he is following her. When Abe is evasive, Nuala pulls a knife on him and orders him to shake her hand. She uses her psychic abilities to read Abe's mind and learns that he is working for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense and means her no harm. Nuala appears shocked when Abe reveals that he has similar abilities and has thus discovered her true identity as well. Mr. Wink interrupts their meeting and Abe orders Nuala to flee while he holds Wink at bay. When Hellboy arrives and fights Wink, Abe carries her to safety. Nuala refuses to hand over the crown piece and map to the BPRD, insisting that where the crown goes, she goes. Johann Krauss is opposed to taking responsibility for the princess, as it goes against protocol, but Hellboy

She defies him and agrees to take her with him, with Abe, who is in love with her, vouching for her.

However, as they leave the Troll Market, they are confronted by Nuada, who seeks revenge for Wink's death at Hellboy's hands. Nuada releases a forest elemental on the agents, and Nuala futilely pleads with him not to. He attempts to warn the agents not to let the elemental near the water, but Abe is unable to catch it in time, causing it to rapidly grow to full size and begin rampaging through the city. Abe carries Nuala to safety while Hellboy fights off the elemental, eventually managing to kill it. Nuala appears somewhat astonished as the creature's body causes vegetation to appear wherever it touches, admiring the released spores. Nuala is then escorted to the BPRD headquarters.

There, she explores the library and reads aloud a book containing Tennyson's 'In Memoriam'. Nuala bonds further with Abe and seems to grow very fond of him, perhaps even reciprocating his romantic feelings for her. However, she remarks that Nuada will eventually find her, through their bond. When Nuala senses her brother's arrival, she hides the crown piece in the book he was reading and attempts to burn the map. Unfortunately, Nuada quickly locates her and is able to decipher the map. He also guesses that she hid the crown piece in a book and begins actively searching for it. While he is distracted, Nuala presses the panic button, alerting the BRPD. When Abe enters the room, Nuala, worried that her brother will kill him, yells at him to stay back. When Nuada hears the concern and affection in her voice, he realises that Nuala has feelings for Abe and angrily grabs her, slashing her face with a dagger and effectively using her as a hostage. Hellboy enters the room and fights Nuada. He is unable to do anything due to being heavily intoxicated and due to Abe's warning that harming Nuada will also harm Nuala, but he puts up a decent fight. Despite Nuada threatening her life on two occasions, Nuala refuses to give her brother the crown piece, despite her concern for Hellboy. After Nuada fatally wounds Hellboy, she tells Abe that if he wants to save his friend and see Nuala again, he must bring her the crown piece, before kidnapping Nuala.

Final battle

Nuada takes Nuala to Bethmoora, where they await the arrival of the BRPD. When Hellboy (who was saved by the Angel of Death), Abe, Liz Sherman, and Krauss arrive, Abe, despite Nuala's protests, hands over the crown piece in exchange for his freedom. Nuada goes back on his word and, awakening the Golden Army, orders them to kill the agents. Nuala's pleas for her brother to spare them fall on deaf ears and she can only watch helplessly as the agents fight the Army. When Hellboy challenges Nuada for the right to control the Golden Army, Nuala tells her brother that he must accept the challenge, as Hellboy, the Son of the Fallen, is technically royalty. Hellboy assures Abe that he will not kill the prince, as this will also result in Nuala's death, but that he will "kick his ass." Nuala watches the duel between Nuada and Hellboy and is slashed in the arm when Hellboy wounds the prince. Hellboy eventually defeats Nuada and takes the crown, but Nuada refuses to back down and leaps, dagger in hand, to stab Hellboy in the back. Nuala, seeing this and realizing that only with her death will her brother be stopped, sacrifices herself to save Hellboy and the world, fatally stabbing herself in the chest with her knife. Nuala collapses to the ground. But thanks to a miracle the connection with his brother was disconnected. making her able to recover and live longer, having immortality as her ability.

Personality

Princess Nuala is in many ways the opposite of her twin brother, Prince Nuada. She appears light, compassionate, and fragile, while the prince is sinister and unyielding. Nuala appears more silent and inactive compared to her father and brother, which may be due to her being raised in a society that does not offer women the same voice as men. However, she shows assertiveness when confronting Abe Sapien and even threatens him with a knife, refuses to part with her crown piece, and also actively challenges her brother's plans, showing that she is not completely submissive. Her brother has great respect for her and seems to value her opinions and feelings as much as his own, though he does not change them. It is unclear whether Nuala is older or younger than Nuada (by a few minutes, at best) and she does not appear to have any significant claim to the throne. She wore one of the three pieces of her father King Balor's crown of Bethmoora. This is unusual considering she does not appear to have any power in the court that would warrant her having the piece (tradition dictated that it should have gone to Nuada, but he was likely denied it due to his hatred of humanity). Nuala appears to be a pacifist, and at her father's command, would rather disappear into darkness and nothingness than remain and fight the evils of man. Her view of her brother's insistence on this is one of pity and shame, but she seems to have great respect for his courage. Nuala also shows an appreciation for art and literature in the film (by reading aloud Tennyson from an 'In Memoriam' anthology). She seems to accept and remember the natural world more when the forest entity is destroyed and its floral remains are scattered. Nuala condemns herself to die to prevent her brother from killing Hellboy and continuing to seek the destruction of humanity.

Other data

Mark of royalty Nuala bears the royal scar which is seen extending from the highest ridge of one cheek to the other and across the bridge of her nose. It is a straight line with several perpendicular lines etched along it as well. There is some speculation (by the actor who plays Nuada and some of the fans) that the scar is given to royal men as a rite of passage and that Nuala bears it because of the bond with her brother. It would therefore serve as a testament not only to the couple's connectivity but also to show Nuala's strength and potential to do as great a good for her people as her father or brother. Other evidence (including the novelization) suggests that the scar is innate and that all of royal blood bear the mark from birth. Either way, it becomes clear that Nuala is, by birth and endurance, just as strong as her twin.

Brotherly love Anna Walton (who plays Nuala) and Luke Goss (who plays Nuada) both agree that there was an undertone of incest on the prince’s part. This may stem from a number of sources; firstly, incest was not uncommon in royal bloodlines in the old world (i.e. those regions impacted by the Roman conquest where rule was by divine right and passed down through bloodlines); secondly, the prince and princess share a very strong psychic bond that could generate an intimacy that humans mistake for erotic love; and lastly, the prince is too focused and would likely have replaced any need for intimacy with a partner with the bond available to him with his sister. Nuada’s attraction to his sister may also stem from a sort of vicarious desire to have the same empathic powers that Nuala has, which would make him more in tune with his surroundings. It does not appear that the prince shares any spiritual powers or any gift of telepathy at all, other than his bond with Nuala.

Beliefs Nuala differs from her brother in that she practices what could be described as the Hindu principle of "Ahimsa" or "do no harm". This is a path to enlightenment and longevity while embracing peace, tranquility, and not harming anyone (or in some cases of Ahimsa, doing as little harm as possible). This would mean that Nuala would likely practice veganism and "personal detachment" in order to reduce any harm to others or herself. Neither the movie nor the book portrays either of those thoughts as fact, but many fans have stated their belief in the idea that elves were "peaceful vegetarian-type creatures" and sought to have peace with nature rather than live like the warrior race the prince once described. Not only does Nuala seem to embrace the survival of humanity, but she is also driven to protect BPRD agents, leading to the idea that she isn't necessarily a complete pacifist (and was willing to harm herself in the end).

Nuala reads Tennyson aloud and doesn't seem unfamiliar with the idea of human literature. She recites a poem called "Be Near Me When My Light Is Low," which Abraham refers to by the title of the anthology she's reading rather than the title of the poem itself. *Nuala is, in fact, the first name of the famous Irish poet Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill.*
