In his presentation, Giyu has the appearance of a young adult of approximately 19 years old. Of average height, white skin, black hair which is long and kept in a ponytail to the lower part of his back and sapphire blue eyes. As characteristic clothing, he uses the regulation attire of the Demon Extermination Corps, which is slightly dyed blue, also wearing a Haori divided [3] into two colors, one red [4], which belonged to his sister [5] and one in the form of geometric patterns [6] of green, orange and yellow [7]; this last pattern is a reminder of his friendship with Sabito [8]. During the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, he lost his right arm[9] and three months after the incident, he had his hair cut[10].

Personality Giyu has a reserved personality and always wears a serious expression on his face. He is shown to have a strong sense of justice with no tolerance for those who do not know their own limitations and waste their lives. Although he held a deep hatred towards demons and never hesitated to kill one, he was able to go against the rules of the Demon Extermination Corps to protect Nezuko Kamado upon realizing that she might be different from other demons[11] and even agreed to sacrifice his life for the sake of her and her brother, Tanjiro Kamado by committing sepukku if the young girl were to eat a human[12]. This implied that he did not completely despise Demons like the rest did,[13] and was willing to make an exception by letting them[14] live if they did not kill or eat humans,[15] proving in turn that he was the most pragamatic when dealing with Demons instead of hating them like the rest of the hunters did. He is someone who does not talk much and seemed to have trouble interacting with others, due to this he kept his distance from his companions.[16] This led him to have a kind of complex with what others think of him and he refused to believe that he was hated as Shinobu Kochō claimed.[17] After having the opportunity to relate to those around him, he wished to improve his relationship with the rest of the Pillars. His distant attitude was due to the fact that he developed a strong inferiority complex since his participation in the Final Selection, which made him a more severe person; this affected him to the point of wanting to abandon his position as a Water Pillar. He came to his senses after Tanjiro Kamado explained to him that he should not live with the guilt of being a survivor but should live for the people who sacrificed their lives for him.[18]

Curiosities Giyu's name contains the kanji for "heroism, loyalty and courage" (義ぎ勇ゆう, Giyū, 義ぎ勇ゆう?). His surname contains the kanji for "wealth" and "hill". The surname Tomioka is also an existing district in Japan. Tomioka's haori has two different designs. The red side belongs to the haori worn by his sister Tsutako while the side with geometric patterns belongs to Sabito, his best friend. For Tomioka, the haori symbolizes sacrifice and loss. Tomioka in the omake of Kimetsu Gakuen Monogatari (Kimetsu Academy Stories) is a Physical Education teacher, he was shown scolding Tanjiro for wearing accessories (like his hanafuda earrings), Inosuke for having an open shirt and Zenitsu for dyeing his hair, despite being told that it is a natural color, receiving a punch for that. Tomioka's Japanese voice actor is the same one who voiced Saito Shimaru from Gintama. Giyu's favorite food is simmered salmon with daikon (winter radish). Seeing a new dish made Giyu smile, a sight that both impressed and disgusted Shinobu. Giyu's rankings in the popularity polls are as follows: Giyu ranked fourth in the first popularity poll with 2,190 votes. Giyu took second place in the second popularity poll with 13,281 votes. Giyu is one of two characters to have their own spin-off, the other being Kyojuro Rengoku. Giyuu's spin-off is a two-part story depicting the events following Giyu's encounter with Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado, called Giyu Tomioka: Gaiden (Part 1) and Giyu Tomioka: Gaiden (Part 2).

Giyu's crow is a very old crow, so it tends to make mistakes when giving messages and moves slowly during battles. It is said to make Giyu very nervous. Giyu's Japanese and English voice actors share the role of Sasori from Naruto: Shippūden. Koyoharu Gotōge's initial design for Giyu was more or less the same as the official design, except that it featured him with fingerless sleeves, a cloth tying the ends of his haori around his waist, and looser-fitting hakama pants. Giyu's overall openness level stood at 30% Giyu's haori was almost torn to pieces after the decisive battle against Muzan, however, Nezuko managed to restore most of it with her craftsmanship and sewing. Giyu was so touched by this that he sent her so many different gifts (kimonos, western clothes, hair ornaments, etc.) that even Zenitsu considered him a potential love rival. Giyu, as well as Tanjiro and Sanemi, fell into a coma after the battle. Every day, Nezuko would go to Giyu with her repaired haori and ask him to come back. For a time, it was unknown if Tanjiro and Sanemi would also regain consciousness due to their condition (taking at least 3 months to fully recover). Giyu befriends Tengen and his family after the battle. When Tengen's son was born, he was allowed to hold the baby. Giyu is one of the 4 Hashira who use a normal Nichirin Katana. The other 3 are Kyojuro Rengoku, Sanemi Shinazugawa and Muichiro Tokito.
