Zeref looks very young, despite his age. He wears red, but in the anime black clothes with gold trim and an open collar, as well as a large, flowing white toga hugging his chest. He has short black hair, slightly bristling on top of his head and dark eyes. He wears a circle-shaped necklace around his neck, where the image of little Natsu and Zeref himself is kept. Sometimes during battle, his eyes turn red, which makes him look even more menacing.

Zeref is known as the most powerful Dark Magician in history. He earned this reputation by mastering the Black Art and creating unimaginable Demons that continue to wreak havoc in the present. Currently, Zeref seeks to isolate himself from the outside world. Being alone, he can be calm and sincere, but at the same time he is in constant turmoil. He wants to die to atone for all the sins he has committed or may commit. Zeref takes care of others, for example, when he warns them not to approach him, knowing that they may die. Sometimes he can be emotionally unstable, for example, when he finds out that Natsu can't kill him, he can't hold back the tears. Also, Zeref cannot control his Magic, so he is quite capable of killing without warning. Despite all this, Zeref can be very vindictive and punishes those he considers evil, which is shown when he kills Hayes. Because of his own immortality and the fact that the world cannot accept him, Zeref decided to reject this world in return.
