The Dothraki rely heavily on their horses, as these animals are an intrinsic part of their nomadic society. They use them for food, transportation, clothing, and as a source of materials for crafts, and their deity is the Great Stallion, reflecting the importance of horses in Dothraki culture. The Dothraki are especially skilled in horsemanship and mounted warfare. They cross the Dothraki Sea in tribes, known as khalasars, which are led by a khal. A khalasar is divided into khas, each led by a khal captain, called a kos. When a khal dies, a new khal may take control of the khalasar, or a khas may leave and form new khalasars led by the old kos. Each khal has his bloodriders. Part guardian, part brother, part companion, the bloodriders hold and keep the khal company in his daily routine. Ancient traditions dictate that when a khal dies, his bloodriders die with him. If a khal dies in battle, his bloodriders live only to avenge him, dying afterwards. Some khals are known to have shared not only their daily routines with their bloodriders, but their wives as well.[5] However, horses are never shared between the khal and his bloodriders. The Dothraki may erect large grass canopies for special occasions, but they typically live in mobile tents, always on the move.
