Biography

Remus John Lupin, (Order of Merlin - First Class), born March 10, 1960. He is of mixed blood and was bitten by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback as a child. Remus attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at the same time as James Potter, Sirius Black, Lily Evans, Peter Pettigrew and Severus Snape. He was sorted into Gryffindor House and befriended three wizards in particular, James, Sirius and Peter, with whom he formed the group known as the Marauders. In his fifth year he was made Prefect of his House. After leaving Hogwarts, he became a member of the Order of the Phoenix alongside his school friends, to fight against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters, and when the Order was reestablished in 1995, he rejoined it. In the early 1990s, Lupin was living in poverty, in a run-down, semi-abandoned cottage in Yorkshire. To make matters worse, Dolores Umbridge, a woman with great influence at the Ministry of Magic, made laws that affected werewolves in the workplace and economy. This caused Remus to start wearing poor, worn-out clothes, and to look unkempt and somewhat haggard. However, Albus Dumbledore tracked Lupin down in the summer of 1993, and offered him the position of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts, replacing the permanently amnesiac Gilderoy Lockhart. Lupin only accepted Dumbledore's proposal when he explained that there would be an unlimited supply of Wolfsbane Potion, courtesy of Severus Snape, now the Potions Master (class). This fact made Lupin happy, especially since he would be tutoring Harry himself, who was already 13 years old by then. However, not everything was joyful, as that same year, his old friend Sirius escaped from Azkaban; Lupin believed, like everyone else, that Sirius was a bad person.

Appearance

Remus was described as having a pale face with premature lines and light brown hair that, as he grew into his thirties, became greyer and greyer. The lines on his face and grey hair were a result of the great amount of stress his body was put under with each full moon. His clothing is consistently tattered and patched, presumably due to his inability to find a decently paying job due to his status as a werewolf.

Personality

Remus was compassionate, intelligent, tolerant, level-headed, peaceful, selfless, brave, kind, and caring. Despite having suffered a great deal of prejudice in his life due to his lycanthropy, he managed to retain the ability to see the good in almost everyone and was extremely forgiving. Remus also had an excellent sense of humor. When he was a student at school he was also part of the Marauders. However, unlike his friends, he never took part in bullying. Therefore, he could be described as the most mature and responsible of the group. He even became a prefect in his fifth year. He was also able to, or at least would try to, maintain a civil conversation with those he didn't get along with. Remus was unusually perceptive, with an uncanny ability to divine the thoughts of those around him. This is especially clear in his conversations with Harry Potter, such as his intuition that Harry was afraid he would think he couldn't handle working with the Boggart. He was a gifted teacher, with a rare talent for his subject and a deep understanding of his students. As always, he was drawn to the underdog, and Neville Longbottom especially benefited from his wisdom and encouragement. His perceptive nature is a rather ironic trait, given that wolves are quite intuitive and astute judges of character and communicate primarily through body language, a skill Remus was extremely developed and talented with. True to being a Gryffindor, Lupin was quite brave. However, he suffered from deep feelings of shame and fear of rejection that, in certain situations, led him to consider backing down. His greatest weakness was that, in his desperate desire to belong and be liked, he was neither as brave nor as honest as he should have been at times.
