Persona Attributes

appearance and clothing

Nick is a fox with a slim build. He is covered in red fur with a creamy underside on his muzzle. He has dark brown fur on his feet, hands, the tips of his ears, and on the tip of his tail. He has green eyes and a dark purple nose. Nick's wardrobe consists of a light green Hawaiian shirt, a dark indigo tie with red and blue stripes, and a pair of off-white slacks. While assisting Judy during her investigation, he wears a ZPD Junior insignia decal on his shirt pocket, originally a gift from Judy to Finnick before she humorously passed it on to Nick. He takes it off after Judy's press conference when Nick feels hurt by it. After Nick graduated as a police officer, his fox uniform is navy blue with sleeves, a pointed cap, a high collar, and pants with a gold aiguillette and the ZPD insignia on the shoulders, along with a black tie and a belt filled with various paraphernalia. He is also shown wearing police sunglasses.

personality

Nick Wilde is suspicious, cunning, and shrewd, traits supposedly common to all foxes. He is easygoing and skilled, easily deceiving and swindling others through his charm and friendly demeanor. He almost always has a sly smile on his face and seems unfazed for most of the film, as he later reveals that due to the numerous years of suffering from the prejudices and stereotypes that come with being a fox, he learned two things: He would never again let them see that they managed to hurt him, and that if the world believes that a fox can only be fake and dishonest, there is no point in trying to be anything else. This led him to be cynical and pessimistic towards the world, and he came to believe that animals can only be what they are, not what they want to be. He is very cunning and intelligent, and is also good at telling what kind of person someone is as he was able to correctly guess from Judy that she was from a family of carrot farmers and graduated at the top of her class with big dreams of making it big and living in a place like Zootopia where it seemed like everything was okay because people could live the same before showing his pessimistic side and declaring that he would never do that and that he would go back home.

background

Nick Wilde is a charming, sometimes con-artist fox with a big mouth and many opinions. But when he is set up by a police rabbit, he finds himself helping her solve a mystery. Nick came from a poor background living with his mother, Mrs. Wilde (his father is never mentioned or seen). As a child, Nick dreamed of joining the local Junior Scouts, with the goal of receiving genuine acceptance. When he was 8 or 9, his mother scraped together enough money to buy a new scout uniform, allowing him the opportunity to join the division. Although he was the only predator there, the only fox, Nick attended his initiation with confidence and enthusiasm, unwittingly walking into a trap. The "initiation" turned out to be a cruel prank and Nick was ridiculed, brutally beaten and gagged by the other explorers for being a fox (as foxes are considered one of the most vile and untrustworthy species of mammals in Zootopia). After running outside to escape his tormentors, Nick ripped off his muzzle and ended up crying, developing a trigger-driven fear of muzzles and aversion towards prey and intolerant mammals. From that point forward, Nick vowed to never expose his true vulnerability to others, causing the fox to present himself as stoic and unapproachable.

background 1

This unfair treatment continued well throughout his life, apparent during his adulthood shown in the film, which only adds to Nick's cynicism. Some of these instances include Nick's interaction with the prejudiced Jerry Jumbeaux, Jr., who specifically states that he has the right to refuse service to anyone, and abuses this power against Nick, openly due to his distrust of foxes. Chief Bogo also displayed this behavior when Officer Judy Hopps, at one point, called Nick as a key witness in her case; Bogo blatantly scoffed at the idea of a fox being trustworthy enough to listen to him, thus refusing to hear her testimony. As a result of this deal, Nick declared that if the world only believes that foxes are nothing but fakes and dishonest, then they should just accept it, and not try to be anything else, thus becoming a successful con artist. At some point during his tenure as a con artist, Nick encountered Mr. Big, a feared Arctic shrew crime boss, and developed a stable alliance with him. Mr. Big liked and trusted the fox, welcoming him into his home and even introducing him to his Grandma, who made him a cannoli. However, Nick later took advantage of Big's trust by selling him a very expensive wool rug secretly made from the fur of a skunk's rear end. Feeling betrayed and disrespected, Mr. Big rejected Nick and threatened to kill him if they ever met again. At the beginning of the film, Nick appears to be comfortable, claiming to have earned $200 daily since the age of twelve (although the accuracy of these claims is questionable). He often works and splits the day's earnings with his short-tempered partner and fellow fox, Finnick.
