Years later, Beowulf had become restless, wondering if that was his limit. He announced his plans to fight once more. What he didn't mention was that he wouldn't be in the ring, as there is no telling where his greatest opponent will show up. erebella is noted for being a big fan of him. In the art for the official Beowulf Steam Trading Cards, Cerebella is seen eagerly getting his autograph.
🐺 PERSONALITY 🐺
Beowulf is a hot-blooded fighter who enjoys the attention he received in wrestling. Even after his downfall following Grendel's defeat and his mother's murder, he is not willing to give up on his career and wants to please his fans. However, he is not well known for thinking things through as he was focusing on career and receiving advice from his shadow "manager" Zane instead of seeing the main problem at hand. Despite his clumsy tendencies, he is a good person and a capable fighter, who rightfully cares about his fans and others. This is shown when he told the crowd later in his Story Mode that his fight with Grendel was fixed after discovering and promising them that he will defeat the Skullgirl. General Information Beowulf was the twenty-second possible DLC character to be revealed in the Indiegogo campaign, raising $440,000. He won the final character vote, and is the fifth confirmed DLC character. He was the first character implemented into the game with scenario-specific "VO" introductions. Beowulf's weight class is the late to lower-mid cruiserweight, the level just below heavyweight. His non-arbitrary wrestling record was 32:0 before his retirement, meaning he is currently undefeated. He was briefly mentioned in the Peacock story, where Andy Anvil notes that he was coming out of retirement
🐺 DEVELOPMENT/ORIGIN 🐺
Beowulf is the name of the protagonist of the anonymous Anglo-Saxon epic poem of the same name, who also kills a gigantic creature, named Grendel, along with Grendel's mother. Hrunting was the mythological hero's sword, and is referred to in Skullgirls as "Hurting", a normal (but durable) saddle used by Beowulf 🐺 PAST 🐺 By defeating the Gigan warrior Grendel and by his illustrious career in the ring across the known world, Beowulf had secured himself a place in the history books as a champion. However, he turned to a lackluster acting career after leaving the ring tarnished by his legacy. Now, as the Canopy Kingdom faces a new threat, Beowulf steps into the ring once more, determined to revive its glory, and in doing so, he stumbles upon the truth about his past... Can Beowulf be able to overcome this new threat to the city and his legacy? Or is this his final taste of the spotlight?
🐺 DESIGN 🐺
Beowulf is depicted as a physically fit fighter with black hair and a stubble beard. He wears brown trousers with suspenders and furs tied to his legs. He also wears a wolf headdress and furs draped over his shoulders and back. During certain movements, and occasionally while being beaten or winning a match, the wolf's head covers Beowulf's face, making him look like a wolf-human hybrid. In addition to his folding chair, Beowulf also uses Grendel's arm as a weapon. His attacks are thematically based on these three themes: The Wolf, Grendel's Arm, and Wrestling Techniques 🐺SKILLS AND FIGHTING STYLE🐺 Beowulf is a character who uses his immense strength and fighting skills to do battle with his opponents. His weapons of choice are the bearable chair The Hurting and Grendel's gigantic arm. Some of his attacks depend on whether he has his chair or not; if not, then he will use Grendel's arm instead. He attacks with chops, stomps, charges, and other forceful kicks. Another element of his fighting style is his collection of throws and finishers that can be comparable to a character from the beat 'em up game genre. Whenever he has an opponent in his range, he can attack with a headbutt, his knee, or various damaging strikes in the air or on the ground. When Beowulf throws his chair across the stage, he has to wait a few seconds before the chair is light and he can be able to pick it up again. If he knocks his opponent into his chair, he deals some extra damage and regains possession of it. Returning to the ring and eager to prove himself to his fans, he challenges Cerebella, a fan eager to aid his wrestling comeback, to a match. Emerging victorious, he consults the advice of his former mentor, Zane MacDougal. Vowing to get his career back in business, a plan is hatched to get Beowulf's popularity back on the radar in preparation for his next fight.
🐺 GAME CURIOSITIES 🐺
Lab Zero Games dug through the archives of many professional wrestling videos when looking for inspiration for Beowulf. His microphone is a reference to wrestler CM Punk, a former professional wrestler. Beowulf's "Standing Light Punch" move has him dramatically holding his hand to his ear in homage to professional wrestler Hulk Hogan. One of his animations is identical to Ric Flair's "Flair Flop" Fan screams and chants of her "Get Hype" move were recorded during a Salty! session, using the voices of Skullgirls fans and attendees at the Ultimate Gaming Center.[1] While there is an actual audience at NMO Arena to cheer Beowulf on during his fights, it has been stated that none of the cheering that happens in other arenas happens anywhere other than in the "head" The Hype mechanic is another important factor for Beowulf where levels (max level is 3) are represented by pyrotechnics and confetti streams. There are several ways to increase the level: performing a taunt, crashing an opponent into their chair, dropping microphones repeatedly with S.MP or holding S.LP. The number of actions he can perform depends on the Super being used and the level he is currently at. When he is at max level and his opponent has a certain amount of HP, he can pin the opponent to the ground after performing a "Body Splash" during Wulfmania or Alpha Maul and the Referee will appear on the count of three, dealing additional damage and knocking the opponent (or the last remaining member in the case of teams) off. His first Blockbuster is a reference to Slayer Dead On Time Overdrive (and possibly also Ralf from Galactica Phantom). Beowulf's Blockbuster "Three Wulf Moonsault" is a reference to the memetic "Three Wolves Howling at the Moon" t-shirt. Successfully landing on the move produces a graphic similar to the shirt's design, featuring three wolves howling at the moon. The animation of the go+
🐺 TRIVIA 2 🐺
+hits before diving are very similar to Shin Shoryuken, from the game Street Fighter. The number 20 palette, two of his Outtake quotes, and his Outtake basic animation are references to Commander Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Riker's rank aboard the Enterprise, Captain Picard's catchphrase, and Riker's unusual approach to using the chair.
🐺 HISTORY 🐺
Having fallen into a life of excess, Beowulf longs to reestablish his image as a hero in the village after his career had hit rock bottom following the end of the Great War. Once regarded as a legend amongst the Canopy Kingdom for having slain two members of the Gigan race then feared at ringside during the turbulent Great War; the warrior Grendel and his mother, who had gained the adoration of the nation and countless fans as the man who had defeated the unstoppable. As the threat of the War faded however, the patriotic spirit that led to Beowulf's popularity eventually crashed; many considering his cameos in other televised media to end his career on a low note. Following a breaking news report regarding alleged sightings of the Skullgirl, Beowulf is attacked by Grendel's severed arm, a reliable weapon in Beowulf's arsenal and a memento of the battle they had fought in. Believing it to be his, he takes the arm to the Great Cathedral and asks for Double's assistance, not realizing that she is no ordinary nun. Judging by the alias "Sister Agatha", Double informs Beowulf that the dead are under the Skullgirl's control and restores the arm by preventing the Skull Heart's influence. Not wanting the Skullgirl to carry what he considers to be a trophy of his "hay day", he decides to take it upon himself to defeat the Skullgirl and claim his fame. Returning to the ring and eager to prove himself to his fans, he challenges Cerebella, a fan eager to aid his wrestling comeback, to a match. Emerging victorious, he consults the advice of his former mentor, Zane MacDougal. Vowing to get his career back in business, a plan is hatched to get Beowulf's popularity back on the radar in preparation for his fight with the Skullgirl. Discerning that the population+
🐺 STORY 2 🐺
+The population is in a state of terror due to the Skullgirl causing suspicious individuals to appear who take advantage of the situation in her wake, Zane assures Beowulf that he will set up cameras to film their adventures, with their triumphs against the criminals to be on the town's behalf. Beowulf enters Little Innsmouth and aims at his target Painwheel (who had been labeled as apart of the "Freakshow"), prompting the cameraman to begin filming himself despite confusing the citizens as to what he was referring to. Having defeated her, he passes by Valentine in the Streets of New Meridian, who had been looking for Painwheel for testing. Deciding to test Beowulf herself, she ultimately loses and alludes to his surprising ability to wield Grendel's arm; but scoffs at the idea that he bested the Gigan, pushing that he had merely posed for the crowds and not having known the magnitude of the battlefield and the strength he possessed unlike herself. Back at NMO Arena, Beowulf reunites with Annie, not recognizing her as the same person when she made a cameo on his TV show "The Glorious Annie: Stellar Symphony" during his waning television career. She warns Beowulf that he had been created to fight such people, as he cannot be "fooled again." Despite her repeated protests, Beowulf remains oblivious to the matter, dismissing Annie as a different actress than the one he worked with on the show. Stopping by Zane's office the next day, Beowulf expresses his concern over the criticism he had previously received for Valentine and Annie. Zane, putting him at ease by saying this is what his fans would have wanted, proceeds to his next task of defeating Big Band at River King's Casino, again personally requesting the "camera girl" to begin filming, despite her reaction.
🐺 STORY 3 🐺
+Bewildered reaction. After their defeat, Big Band lets it be believed that the fight was used as a distraction so that "they" could have the goal of destroying Dr. Avian and Lab 8. Realizing that things are not what they seem, Beowulf heads back to Zane's office in search of answers. Zane told him not to worry about the details as he plans another fight for him against an opponent he swore will be greater than his fight against Grendel. When Beowulf appeared in the ring he was then confronted by a doppelganger of himself who revealed to Beowulf that Grendel was drugged during their legendary fight. At a loss for words on his part, Beowulf's doppelganger continued to berate him on the fact that the fight was manipulated by both the ruling class kingdoms and the criminal world in their first ever joint operation to show the Gigans that they could be better. At first underestimated by this revelation, Beowulf soon became distraught at having heard the truth. Ridiculing this fact, the double demands Beowulf to hang up his talk and apologize to the audience as he leaves in disgrace, but the original firmly states his philosophy of all the controversies that were set up in the ring before that, of having won his fight against a twisted mirror image of himself saying to Gemini that he promised Beowulf that he would regret this turn of events. But Beowulf had already admitted to a great number of regrets in his life, especially between him and Grendel before telling him that he was dead and then kicking him out of his ring; the fake declaring that he had no say in the matter. Having come to recognize the truth in his pretending words, he went on to say that he never realized it until now. Feeling guilty about his ignorance of such a scandal the former champion promised both his fans and his fallen adversary; Grendel. That he personally would+
🐺 STORY 4 🐺
+He will personally take on the Skullgirl himself as a means of redemption on her page and in his own eyes, the crowd cheering him on even more at the statement. When he returned to his managers office, Zane was the least excited to hear what Beowulf had shouted in the ring. A still hyped Beowulf remained steadfast in his desire to defeat the Skullgirl for New Meridian, but Zane was less than impressed and a little annoyed that his "dog" had slipped from his leash after setting up all those fights against the strange characters who had pitted him against him. Now hearing that he intended to defeat the Skullgirl in combat Zane quickly said his whole joke stating that Beowulf's fate had now been sealed. A bewildered Beowulf wondered what his compadre was talking about asking what he had gotten himself into, having grown tired of this frivolity, Double soon comes out in his Zane disguise proclaiming that it was time to finish him off. Proclaiming the oddity he was witnessing to be insane, Double soon ensnares Beowulf and swallows him whole. Trapping him in Hell; his innermost self, along with a number of other combatants who were defeated by him in the former Rise of the Sith's grand matches he had established as Zane, taking note of this, questions who Double really is. The formless beast simply resumes the form of a nun and gathers back in the Grand Cathedral wondering if he remembers her or her words, stating that these others were simply fools who stood in the way of his ultimate plans for the Skullgirl and since he chose to oppose Beowulf he would also share her fate. After having bested the demonic shapeshifter Beowulf wonders if the insides of the abominations in the hell pit are also hers. 🐺 STORY 5 🐺
+the inside of the abominations in the hell pit are also hers. Stating that she could easily beat everything to a pulp like her jailer did if she had too much, but her disgust at the concept of her fleshy prison was evident; Double retorts that she must get used to it saying that she will never be able to get out, but Beowulf continues to say that she still has her trusty chair named Hurting: that it is named that for a reason. Her annoyed jailer clarifies that she must use it for its intended purpose as it could easily make her stay in hell much less pleasant. Soon however, Annie comes rushing in on a wave of stars slicing through all the prisoners Double had consumed including Beowulf. They emerge from a vein leading out of Gehenna and climb up the Skullgirls' cryptic tower beneath the Cathedral, as it was being destroyed by their savior Beowulf who wonders if the Skullgirl was just ahead as if stating. Annie immediately knew what he was thinking and tried to dissuade him from taking such a foolish action thinking he could defeat her. But he was determined to rectify his past mistakes to Grendel and the citizens of Meridian City by claiming that he screwed up due to loving the spotlight as a hero after no one recognized him as one now. He tells her that he had a duty if not a responsibility to do so and make things right after promising everyone he knew or inspired what he would do now upon having the only chance to do so. Realizing that the world would not listen to her reason, Annie acknowledged his reckless design and to not care more or less if he dies doing what he said when she tried to stop him. Soon Grendel's arm began to react with the presence of the Skullgirl influencing it, Beowulf simply followed all the way to his final encounter, there he would meet his ultimate challenge.
🐺 STORY 6 🐺
Bloody Marie was perplexed by her reunion with Beowulf as he signaled his intent to fight with the arm of a Gigan corpse. Beowulf simply replies that both were already dead and reintroducing them to each other with this strange unlife seemed fitting. As the Skullgirl belittled the challenger for his exploitation of Grendel, both past and present and based on his own gain no less, she gives her last glimmers in the fact that she realizes the battle was set and looks to seek restitution from him; her companion in the horrible truth that she had found to enable him to rest in peace. Upset by the notion of the "dog's" glory before her, it was out of her own hollow sentimentality that she promised him there would be no easy relief for him, but instead a burial, once she was done with him.
