The future actor was born in the small town of Klimovsk near Moscow, into the family of a worker and a Russian literature teacher, who later left school and began leading a theatre group. As a child, shy Lenya never even thought about becoming an actor. He was more interested in nature, and the boy's special passion was horses. Leonid spent four years doing equestrian sports, while at the same time attending various clubs, and in his teens he learned to play the guitar and began performing in school amateur productions. After the ninth grade, he entered the Kolomna Agricultural College, in order to later engage in professional horse breeding. However, during his studies, his plans changed. The college took away Leonid's interest, and he began to seriously consider acting.

After his second year, he dropped out of college and entered the Shchukin Theatre Institute on his first attempt, in Yuri Shlykov's class. Already in his first year, he began to participate in theatrical productions; the man became a sought-after, talented actor.
